Date: 02 Feb 1999 19:33:40 -0600 Talvin Singh is an Indian artist. You may have seen his work on a Philips commercial in which an Indian man and woman dance in a club to a song of his. His first album, Anokha, is a compilation of different Indian techno, trancey type stuff, and is pretty good. OK is his first solo album, and if you want to hear any of it, czech out CDNow or some similar online CD store and type his name in. I bought Anokha due to recommendations from this group (and my fascination with Indian music), and I like it a lot. I have heard OK at CDNow, and it seemed decent, but not enough to get me to go buy it yet. I'd say if you like it online, get the promo, and if you can't get it online, buy it anyway. -Marc Sawaya # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Violette @`-,-`-" Subject: (orbital) No sign of progress?.... Anyone want to trade it for Little Fluffy Clouds? Oh yea, Mehul, I got your Radiccio. If you don't want it sent from Japan, you won't get it until June. Either way is fine with me though. Later. If you noticed, when someone walks out of one screen, they magically appear on the next, and there is a huge loop going on and it's very complex. The other one (which does, indeed, star P & P) is the U.S. produced version to play on MTV (I'm not sure if MTV produced it or not). Sounds like they sampled the vocal line, edited the sample to give it more of an attack and then played her voice through a keyboard/sequencer to give it that weird effect. Here's what I picked up this week. Utah Saints (used) - Gotta love the old stuff man.... Takes me back ;) Zoorave 2 (used)- I friggin love this CD. I had the tape years ago and loanded it to a friend, who left it at his girlfriends house and then broke up with her. Never got it back. But now I have the CD! Another trip down memory lane. Man, that's like back in the days of junior high.... The Orb - U.F.Off 2 CD. Stumbled across the 2 CD version and just had to have it. Dunno why, I paid an arm and a leg for something I didn't really want and had never planned on buying. Haven't had a good listen yet, but who cares, the cover rocks :) The Orb - Orblivion (MP3). Now this is tip top stuff. Defianetly on the cool side of groovy ambient music. And getting the MP3s helps take the bite out of the cost of U.F.Off. The Orb - Orbvs Terravm (used). The bees knees. I'm deinately getting into the ambient stuff, and developing a real taste for the Orb. The Orb - Pomme Fritz (used). Why not eh? With the used copy of U.F.Orb I got last year, I've almost got thier whole discography second hand! I'm lovin it! Aphex Twin - Classics. Yummmmmmmm. Plaid - Not for Threes. Man, did I pay for this one. But sooo tasty, and it has some of the best sounding bass to an album I've heard. Clean as hell, nothing dirty in the low end. Tasty indeed. Autechre - Peel Session (MP3). Well, I can't wait to find this in a store somewhere. But until then the sub-par MP3s will have to do. Nasty background hiss on them though, and a crap job compressing, the highend is pretty much clipped out. Roni Size Reprazent - New Forms(MP3). Just can't get enough of that 'ol drum 'n bass. 6 more hours and I should have it all ;) Goldie - Saturnzretun(used). Can this guy shut up about his mother already? The second CD is the wasp's nipples though. The track with KRS-1 is killer, especially the end, nice bassline comes in and the fast part. Gea... Should I pick up Saturn? Well, that's about it. First off, go to www.gizmo.net and download Go!Zilla. You don't need a download resumer to do this, but Go!Zilla just kicks butt :) Get Right probably works great too. 1) Anyways, go to Loopz page and head over to the video section (http://www.hyperreal.org/loopz/) 2) Save the .ram file you want to download (Right click and pick save as, or copy to clipboard and paste to Go!Zilla using ctrl+v) 3) Open the file (for example, style56.ram) in Notepad 4) Replace pnm:// with either ftp:// or http:// (I use http, but Wouter says ftp works fine) 5) Paste that URL into Go!Zilla or getright. If you paste it into a web browser, RealAudio will attempt to play it. There ya go. This doesn't always work, as I've heard some servers encrypt the address in the ram file, but so far it's worked fine. And people, please don't abuse this. Don't distribute the files. They are copyrighted. They're only on Loopz' site because, well, he's the man. Don't fuck with the man. And while I'm at it, MP3s and Warez are bad :) Xaos 80 97 116 114 105 99 107 32 77 99 71 105 110 110 # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Morey Gamble Subject: Re: (orbital) So horny tonight..... Also, I was checking out some web pages, and the MSRP for the VHS tape is four bucks! Is that awesome or what? CDNow has it for 3.50. Warp's practically giving it away, which is good. Apparently the video will "not be shown on TV" due to the explicit content we've all been hearing about, which means we won't be able to bootleg it off MTV/M2/MuchMusic. What I'd really like to see is a DVD with all of the Warp videos on it... Mmmm, digital sound. It's probably out of their reach though, as there isn't (IMHO) a big enough target audience for them to actually make money... Sigh. Acen - 75 Minutes : Disappointing. I was expecting old school dark hardcore, like Close Your Eyes (Optikonfusion) but instead it was more happy housey sounding. I really dislike some of the piano samples they used, very harpsichordish. However, It has some dope remixes on it. About half the cd is alright and the other half kicks ass. If you like Acen, it's worth getting and isn't too expensive. Boards of Canada - Music has the Right to Children : What can I say but absolutely amazing! Everyone should run out and buy this cd right now. It's sounds similar to AE Tri Repetae sort of sound, but with distorted (not noisey) trip hop sounding beats. It sounds similar to Gescom (or what I've heard under Gescom). It's a shame that the best trak imho Roygbiv is only 2:34 long. This trak should at least be an hour! An absolute must have. Coming in the mail (on vinyl, hoping to have my tech 12's by their arrival) Underworld - Born Slippy Acen - Window in the Sky (can anyone tell me which version this is?) I orderd this in at HMV weeks ago, the same time I ordered the Plaid album. I got Plaid about two weeks ago but I'm still waiting anxiously for the BOC album.... My latest acquisitions (besides the new speakers, mmmmm) are the following: Goldie/KRS-1 Digital Single: I love this track, and some of the remixes are quite nice, but the Armand Van Helden mixes don't quite live up to his other mixes (sugar is Sweeter, Spin Spin Sugar). Massive Attack - Protection (MP3): I really like this album, and it was ripped decently. If only all of track 8 were there. Soundtrack of the Fifth Element (MP3): What the hell, just about everone has it. Chemical Brothers - Brothers Gonna Work It Out (MP3): They mix some decent stuff here, but it's not something I'm likely to have on a lot. Fluke - Six Wheels on my Wagon (MP3): Quite sexy. Love the sound and style of Fluke, not as hard as their later stuff. Air - Moon Safari (MP3): This is cute, a neat little bistro-ish French album, but short. They're all pretty good picks (I forget if I've mentioned any of these albums before, midterms have my mind spinning) with the possible exception of the Brothers album, unless you're looking for a mix album. And I just can't stop listening to Digital and Dragonfly. I tested the speakers I was looking at this weekend with these two tracks and now I just can't stop! -- If a synchronized swimmer starts to drown, does the partner have to drown too? The only difference that I've noticed is that MTV plays a lot more Limp Bizkit and sellout thrash crap. Much, on the other hand, plays sellout dance crap. Even trade. And yeah, that is extreme. Much does have a lot of really good shows, but the actual videos shown aren't that different. You look at the top 25, it's pretty much all on MTV too. If I had to choose I'd give Much the upper hand. That carson kid drives me up the wall. He has the IQ of a grapefruit. M2 on the other hand (we're up to three, now), shows a TON of 80s videos. I think MTV owns the rights to every popular video made in the last ten years... So we're left with a ton of shit, and some great gems dropped outside the mainstream. I'm a little new to Orbital, so I don't know. Also, does anyone have any Orbital stuff on video, like their music videos and live stuff? I'm looking for some. I know this is off the Orbital topic, but some people have expressed an interest on what is going on with the Orb right now, and I just recently got a message about some new happenings with the Orb so here it is: Fwd: Yesterday a did an interview with Thomas Fehlmann (The Orb's third member) and one with Sun Electric. Thomas Fehlmann came up with some spicey details about The Orb (some things about Kris Weston aka Trash I didn't know) and some things about the new stuff that should arrive within two months, according to Fehlmann. There are three working titles at the moment, Cydonia is one of them. But the title depends completely of the artwork Alex will come up with. There is one track with Robert Fripp on it. And at the moment Alex, Thomas and Fripp are working om a new album. In march they go into the studio with each other to finish it. Probably it will be releases on Fripp's label. Just like Alex, Fehlmann finds the FFWD album the best thing The Orb has ever done. I asked why it took them so long to finish the new Orb album and he answered that an good album is just like good wine. It need some time to gets better. And during this proces they constant add and take away things. He also talked about Alex and told me that Alex is the one that's gets the best out of every person involved. He told me when Andy and Thomas made any track, it isn't an Orb track before Alex gets his hands on it. No matter how beautiful the track is, it isn't an Orb track before Alex played with it. This week I'm going to write the articles. When I find any details on the tape you should know about, I let you know. Later Nico Well there it is. That's whats new. Now maybe someone could tell me what's new with Orbital? There was this beach and at first a car with some girls in it and they get stuck. The video ends when a small buggy drives along and three women step out and pull the car up with their hands or something. That's basically the video, I think either the group or the track was called something B________. I heard some excellent stuff about >their show at Zoolu (flame throwers, Chinese dragon costumes, etc.). >Anyone heard of them? Rabbit in the Moon is sort of hard to classify. The studio incarnation (also known as lunasol) has done tons of remixes, from orbital and goldie to white zombie and sarah mclachlan. They've released quite a few tracks on various electronic/dance compilations. (urbal beats 1 & 2, plastic compilation, several on moonshine's united state of ambience series). I guess you'd have to call most of the stuff progressive house. It's very up-tempo, uplifting, on the trancier side of house, lots of breaks, I really like almost all of their stuff. The live incarnation is another beast altogether. It consists of one guy (dave christophere) performing all the music, and a keith flint-like blonde dreadlocked guy named, er, Bunny. Not keith flint in the sense of loud and obnoxious, but in the sense that he's something to visually focus on so it's not just a guy standing at the back of the stage behind some keyboards. He comes out in a different costume every song and works the crowd, dances around, acts crazy, comes flying hanging from a wire wearing a giant disco-ball suit, comes out in a moss-man suit while the video screens show footage of him running around city streets dressed that way, comes out as a 20-pointed black and day-glo yellow striped star while giant inflatable spikes rise up from the floor, and so on and so forth. The music in the live show is sort of a conglomeration of a bunch of their tracks and remixes strung together with clever breakdowns, but it's not nearly as fulfilling as his recorded stuff. The basic purpose of their live show is more or less the distilled essence of what a good rave/party is about. A maximum sensory experience, sound, lights, visuals, glitter guns (two weeks later i'm still finding glitter all over my house) rainbow glow-ropes, prism glasses, the whole nine yards. Which goes a long way to explain why they're the most popular live dance act in the country..
