Guess why i'm so happy to finally have a REAL one? ;-D the problem is (my educated guess!) that the record industry can't tell us what we do at home, but it HAS quite some power with the hardware manufacturers, they are all somehow entangled with the record industry, (e.g. through (patent-)licenses for CD/MD/MC/whatever!) and/or part of it (e.g. Sony).. I guess THAT is the reason why none of the announcements i saw over the past few years has ever really seen the light of day!.. Just check www.mp3.com/hardware, you won't see any *available* portable mp3-CD-players except for the Genica ones (the other one for $115 is also the Genica one, just under a different name!), just a list of about 10 *announced* ones! And if that wasn't enough of a farce, all the *announced* ones are way more expensive than the Genica, too! >:-) If 2nd Generation mp3-CD-players (e.g. with ID3-support) really DO become available someday i will definately be able to sell the Genica one with profit prolly still as quite many people would like one of those! <;-) DeeKay # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Shannon K. I actually do have a mod that sounds exactly like Halcyon :-) But it was actually kinda good, he was up front about it, so it wasn't like he was ripping them off; it was more just an experiment to see how to reconstruct a song. Anyway, about Bola; AFAIK this is only one guy (Darrell Fitton), and I think he's involved with Autechre on the Gescom projects. Also has 3 other releases on Skam; two older (a 12" and 7") which are unfortunately very OOP so unobtainable by traditional means. One new release, 'Mauver' on 12" and CDS. 'Mauver' is also very good, except that its only 4 tracks, and I'd say only one of these is very 'Soup'-like. The first track actually has an MC, and he runs his voice through some weird filters to make it interesting... but I usually skip this track because it wears out after a few listens. The other two still have the lush 'Soup'-like elements but they are more subtle and underneath some weird distorted techno/electro. Good in their own right, but also different than Soup. Anyone have comments on the new Plaid? ('trainer'). At first I was put off by the dated-ness of it (a track from before 1990??? hehe) but its growing on me. And, Angry Dolphin has to be on my top 5 'jungle' tracks ever... regards, Aronne _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. The good news is that it will exist again! I'm in an apartment off campus, and I'm getting a dsl line. The bad news is that it takes 4-6 weeks to get dsl installed, so you'll have to wait the extra bit more. Plus, I have no idea if I'll be able to have an ftp server with this isp (if people know about that sort of thing, information would be great). Hopefully I'll be able to put some good things up on it, and I still have all the great Orbital (minus the videos, get those from Loopz). So I'm excited and you should be too! I based a Vegas trip around an Orbital concert (the past Community Service tour with Crystal Method) and I got to see them 3 times in 4 nights I believe (Santa Monica and San Diego as well). It was great! Just being in Vegas seeing a concert is a different experience than over here.. actually the San Diego one was different too. I think you missed my point, which was that new people constantly subscribe to this list, and they might not know about some of the rarer Orbital releases, eg their Queen Latifah remix. I know that if I saw "Queen Latifah - In My House (Orbital Remix)" on Napster I'd have my doubts if I hadn't heard about the song before. So please stop your lambasting of people who ask valid Orbital questions...it's something I wouldn't mind a little more of on the ML. Date: 21 Sep 2000 22:37:24 +0200 Okay, I'm back and i have lots and lots to report... I'll start chronologically... We (me and a friend, until then no Orbital-fan! 8) arrived in Thessalonica on Thursday and spent almost the whole Friday finding the fucking place (after being misled by some waitor to the "Helexpo" fair that was going on at the time)... Then again the search for the place required me to peel off one of the posters that were all over town just to get the fucking description (who can read greek writing anyway? <:-) so the search also had its merits.. When i got there i saw a banner by some local radio station so i thought "great! Let's just record it from the radio in A quality!".. we went back to our Hotel (Orbital was scheduled latest at 11pm) and it took me atleast 15 minutes to explain the guy at the counter what he should do for me (put in tape - select 88.5 on the radio, press record at 11pm) So we went to the gig with an extra portable stereo that i had just bought for this purpose.. We watched the pretty sucky Dandy Warhols and i found out that the gig was NOT broadcast on the radio unfortunately! <:-( I tried to get something from the mixing desk people but there wasn't a chance! So the gig started and my trusty friend stood there all through the concert with the stereo in his backpack while i was going completely nuts jumping around having the greatest time in quite a few years! 8) Before i heard them live i always wondered why they ALWAYS played the Halcyon/Carlisle/Jovi track, Satan and Chime cause i thought they weren't THAT great!.. Okay, so now i DO know why! <:-) You gotta experience it live to understand it, it really rocks hard!.. Satan really KICKS ASS live!.. They even had a NEW track in their set that i had never heard before, it turned out to be a "nothing left" remix later into the track when the Alison Goldfrapp singing came in! But it was a completely new version, Steve confirmed this later on when they repeated it in Athens! Plus Phil went completely berserk on 'The Box' this time twiddling the filters like there was no tomorrow! ;-D It was great! Unfortunately we found out later that the bootlegging was all in vain since i put in a metal tape i brought with me and the sucky stereo was unable to properly erase the music that was on it before, so all we got now from show 1 is a bootleg layered with FSOL, Aphex Twin, Paul van Dyk and even Orbital themselves!.. I strongly doubt there's any chance to get anything out of this except for a tracklist, or does anyone know it there's a way to 'subtract' a signal (=song), i mean i DO have the original songs that were on the tape?!... Anyway, that didn't really spoil it since the evening was great otherwise... We managed to sneak backstage by just following a few people that went in (dunno if they had backstage passes or not, but i think one chick of them did! 8) as if we belonged to them!.. And once we were in, nobody ever wondered anymore who we were! No security, nothing! 8) Just great!.. And there they were, standing around talking, seeming pretty happy and content! 8) When Paul came out of the trailer they were put in i asked very carefully if he would sign the covers i had brought for this purpose (all albums except for in sides, which i couldn't find unfortunately!) and he said "Sure! Let's sit down and have a chat!"... So we did, chatting about crusades (don't ask! <:-) and lots of Orbital related stuff, i told him i was a collector and a big fan and that i mainly only came to greece to see them finally! ;-D So he told me about a rare track that noone has called 'rave on' but i could tell he was only joking cause he expected me to go all bonkers about not having it! ;-D Contrary to what i expected i was pretty calm and really DID remember most of the things i wanted to ask them! 8) So, here's a short summary of the things i can remember right now: -The figure on the MON-cover is not from the box video, it is actually a photograph paul took against the sun! Plus the figure was supposed to be INFRONT of the circle, but the designer screwed it up! 8) -the "Drive! Well, come on!!" sample really is from Suzie Quattro -the "I don't know you people" sample comes from some 70s English Horror movie called "house of horror" or something like that.. -Work on the new album is done, it will be released early next year, hopefully in March.. It will contain another epic 17-minutes track like Out there somewhere or The Box (yesss! 8) No Title has been found yet though! -They actually DID come to Germany several times, but that was pretty long ago (long before i turned into an Orbital fan! <:-) and they WILL come back late March next year! -They DO use a G3-Mac for making music! 8))) They actually got a G4 when it came out but there was trouble with the software being only G3-optimized back then (=troubles when running on G4!) so they brought it back! <:-) -Paul seems to love Pete Tong, he was praising the (assumably local) DJ that spun the records inbetween the Dandy Warhols and Orbital (it really WAS a cool set, lots of Hybrid (yeah, right on! ;-D) comparing him to Pete Tong when he showed up backstage.. -I asked them if they ever heard of either Bon Jovi or Belinda Carlisle and Paul said that Belinda has contacted them and told them she loved the live Halcyon track and offered them to do an official remix if they wanted to! (which they haven't done sofar! <8) Nothing from Bon Jovi though (up to now)!.. -We talked about the Aphex Twin, agreed he's a league of his own and Paul characterized him as being permanently in the state you're in when you wake up at night and are half awake and half asleep, in some kinda weird dream state, which is prolly the best- fitting description for Aphex ever! ;-D He also said that he heard that Richard is currently making a film... So, later i met Phil and he was also totally nice and friendly and i also got to know their producer Micky (Another boldyhead in best orbital tradition! 8), who offered to put us on the guestlist for the Athens gig when we told him we were going there, too! 8))) When we said goodbye Phil even gave us backstage passes to make sure we'd get into the Athens gig! ;-D It was totally awesome!.. The next day we drove to Athens by train (taking 7 and a fucking half hours (Bad railroad, train stopped every few hundred meters!)) And arrived there in the early evening, still having NO clue at all where to stay for the night and where the gig actually was!.. When asking for directions to the central bus-depot we found out by a sheer coincidence that they had MOVED the place a day before the venue to a completely different part of Athens (and Athens is biiig!), this one clerk in the shop told us that his brother wanted to go when we showed him the poster (which had info on the Athens gig aswell on it!) and that they changed the venue location, so we were really lucky since we wouldn't have got from the ex-place to the real one in time for the orbital gig!.. Somehow we found the place and now we only had to find a hotel to unload out backpacks and have a place for the night.. Which is a bit tricky in a town where NO Taxi-driver seems to understand any English! Not even totally uncommon words like "left", "right" or even the for taxi drivers extraordinary and totally uncommon term "hotel"! Anyway, we found a place after some trouble and atleast 3 weirdo non-english speaking taxi-drivers.. Guess what it was called? <:-) Hotel "Alkion".. And as we all know Alkyon is the seabird that is supposed to bring the luck & happiness that the word "halcyon" is derived from! ;-D Fucking nice coincidence i'd say as the place was pretty much off-center and didn't have many hotels at all!.. Ok, so we went to the gig (i took a business-card of the hotel with me for the fucking cabbies on the way back! >:-) and noticed that there were atleast 300 people standing infront of it that didn't get any more tickets.. Lucky us walked in with our '1337 VIP- backstage passes and arrived just when (guess what) the sucky dandy warholes were on again! <:-) Anyway, we went straight backstage and guess who was there? Steve, da man! He was loaded with electronic gadgettery like a digicam and a digital videocam to cover the event for Loopz! 8) Now that's what i call a devoted webmaster! ;-D Contrary to what i feared (we DID have a few disputes via mail before! <:-) I really got along great with him! We met some more of the hardcore-Orbital fans later, a few locals (Hi Minas! Hi Elena! Do mail me if you read this!) and some more from abroad (Hi Brian! 8)) chatting away most of the time (we had such a great time that i even didn't find much time to talk to the Hartnolls at all! <:-). I was a good consumer bitch and took the chance to buy 2 Orbital shirts (one of which i seem to have lost somewhere along the way though! <:-( and then the gig was already about to start. We got a NORMAL tape this time and i managed to exchange the sucky stereo from the Thessalonica gig for a recordable walkman (the kind that reporters use!), so we used this one to bootleg the gig. It was largely the same as the day before (ofcourse) though they varied the play order. Still, it was once more one great experience! 8)) I checked the tape later and the quality is rather bad to average as it is now... strangely the volume varies alot, but i guess with some de-noising, levelling the volume and other remastering techniques i should be able to make something of this one atleast! <:-) I'll keep you posted!.. Anyway, the next day we met a few of the Athens people & Steve and they showed us around Athens and we just had one heck of a great time! 8) Summing up it was one hell of an experience and i strongly advise anyone who hasn't seen them live to take any measures necessary to change that! 8) They really DO fucking rule, it's so true!.. Your very very delighted and extremely happy DeeKay P.S.: I handed in the film for development today and also chose to get an extra CD-ROM cause i'd scan all the pictures anyway, so expect some 20 pictures of the two gigs (concerts, not Gigabytes! >:-) in super-quality soon! ;-D # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Shannon K. Brunet" Subject: (orbital) wishful thinking Date: 26 Sep 2000 02:10:15 -0400 (EDT) Hello All! Playing a bit in the realm of really-wish-it-could-happen make believe... Since the brothers P have wrapped preliminary tracks for the new album, don't you all think that it's time to put together an Orbital DVD/VHS release? Since they're about to head off for a mini-world tour, with many large venues, taping performances wouldn't be too much of a hassle, and the promotion value of the release would be a perfect tie-in for the new album. Add to that the fact that Orbital have never released a video presentation of their work, and that the market is ready for such a release (to go along with live dvd/vhs releases from such high-profile acts as Underworld, and Nine Inch Nails), and the idea seems like a sure-fire winner. Any wish-lists for the release? My dream DVD (has to be a DVD - crisp picture, 6 channels of sound, and the market's ready for it) would be: Orbital: Nothing Left 2 DVD set Disc 1: Full Orbital Show in anamorphic widescreen (has to be widescreen to capture all of the screens) and 5.1 channel sound- perhaps edited together from all of the 2000 shows still left in the year. Alternate video track consisting solely of the imagery from the background screens, with the live sound playing in the background Alternate commentary track with Paul, Phil, Mickey Mann, and Loopz discussing songs, the tour, and whatever else they find interesting Disc 2: All of Orbital's released video clips, including both versions of the Saint, and "Live experience" (the promo Halcyon w/ Bon Jovi/Carlisle samples) Tx: Nothing program in its entirety (the BBC's been great about licensing its programming for DVD) Clips from the Doctor Who BBC program Clips from Meltdown dance piece - one of the choreographers/performers must have taped it for their portfolio Clips from the Cream countdown to 2000 gig - the beeb was taping for at least the last few minutes, right? And last but not least - our man Steve Price given 30 minutes to rant about whatever he likes ; ) Sorry if this was a waste of people's time - got all excited when I saw that the new album tracks are preliminarily done, and got to thinking of how Orbital could spend the remainder of their year (I know that there's still much work involved in getting the tracks ready for release). Man, even Weird Al has his own DVD (he actually has two) - doesn't Orbital deserve to get such treatment (and don't us fans deserve to finally see the visual side of our favorite band)? I'd pay upwards of $50 to get my hands on such a release. That's my two pieces of currency, Mike P.S. Steve, any chance of any of this becoming reality? Any plans (ever) for a video release, live or not? # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Trym Asserson" Subject: (orbital) chop for my feet Date: 26 Sep 2000 09:03:52 BST Back after months of summer temp'ing, a much too short week on Ibiza and a good couple of concerts with the likes of Amon Tobin, Plaid and other artists guesting Oslo. Ibiza was fun, good ol' classic just like in the Undiscovered series, only better since it was experienced first-hand now. Never been much a fan of trance, and probably changed my idea of some of it now that I've been clubbing to it rather than the stupid, cheesey euro-trance which plagues many clubs in Oslo. No, this was a more choicey selection by different DJs of different caliber, and it fit the mood of the island. Sipping lager on the beach in baking sun with cool, tribal and deep house coming from the speakers of the Bora Bora bar mere feet behind you. Catching the sunset from Mezzanine Bar, Cafe Savannah and clichee-enough Cafe del Mar to great chill and ambient, and the pre-club parties warming you up for the big show-down with carnival sorts of behaviour at these sunset bars as the clubbers came out and the ol' folks closed the shutters of their windows. Idyllic island, great beaches, great weather, great music (for the setting). BUT, major point was seeing Amon Tobin on the Thursday of a week and Plaid on the following Saturday. I can only put it in terms of the quote used in Biosphere's "SETI Project", 'it was unbelievable". Plaid did only one track from Rest Proof..., the rest from the first Mbuki sumthin' and the Not For Threes record. Amon Tobin, wow, bass loud enough to rock your soul and re-arrange my insides. Now, the Ninja Tune's 10th anniversary Xen Tour is on its way, oh yes, what great way to wrap up summer! Er, sorry to be a pest, but I'd just like to say that I don't see any reason why you'd only want anamorphic widescreen. While yes, I generally support releasing movies in widescreen format (except, for example, when full-frame [not pan & scan] transfers are available--e.g. The Shining, Full Metal Jacket), and I strongly believe that all widescreen transfers should be anamorphic to help future-proof them, I just don't think concert footage needs to be framed cinematically. I mean, saying it "has to be widescreen to capture all of the screens" makes no sense. Whether in 16:9 or 4:3, my TV is still a fixed width. If all the screens are visible in a 16:9 transfer, they're damn well going to be visible in a 4:3 transfer--you just get to see more on the top and bottom, too. So, assuming this theoretical disc is ever made, please include a full-frame transfer on the other side :) 5.1's a must, but hey, why not go for 6.1? While we're at it, Dolby Digital or DTS? :) And hey, while I'm dreaming, throw The Visit on there, and give us some multimedia content--maybe all the videos & sound clips on the Loopz site. I gather it's the same for the whole Xen Tour, so the line up is Kid Koala & PLove (displaying apt mastery on four decks), plus The Herbaliser (dj Ollie Teeba) and Dynamic Syncopation. The ticket also lists Jake Wherry although he's not mentioned by the previews I've seen so I'm not sure whether it's The Herbaliser who appears or if it's the two djs as separate dj acts. I mean, what's happened? I can't say much about his style because I haven't got the other albums, apart from a sampler of Modus Operandi which is quite jazz-inspired with piano and a rich bass. This new album however struck me as if he's about to change musical direction, it sounded like a change towards house and more electronika, weird whooshy noises and acid lines than what I'd expect, which is drum'n'bass. Only in the second part of the album did it get to what I was expecting, but the first five-six tracks just seemed out of place for that album. Anyone else's thoughts on that? I mean, take for instance A Guy Called Gerald's "Essence". It's maybe got a bit of the same change in it, and a lot of vocals, but still I'd classify most of those tracks as drum'n'bass or beats resembling jazz/drums/bass more than anything else. Peshay did something of the same with "Miles From Home", kinda delivering a more listenable album than your average 'dj'ed d'n'b set (which would probably be bad for listening through a 10-track album), including vocals and chilled, ocean breeze and jazz-club'ish variants, but it all fit the category d'n'b and the rest of the songs might be fill-tracks between the more beaty ones. But with Photek's new album I found the first five-six to be sort of what I'd expect to be fill-tracks between the more solid d'n'b songs towards the end of the album, not standing alone like that in consecutive order. Anyway, didn't buy the album and probably won't either until I change my view of what d'n'b should be more like. Not that I'm stuck in one category and have a recipe for d'n'b, but a clean cut from the genre, no thanks. I heard somewhere (don't know if it was from an interview, or if someone just made it up... but anyway) that his releases on Virgin are going to be more accesible/mainstreamy stuff, as he's trying to reach a larger audience, and experiment with other dance music styles. He still releases stuff on Photek Productions (his own label); I think there is a compilation CD coming out soon on that label, but I forget the name. I'm not planning on getting the new album, from your descriptions and many others, it doesn't sound worth the time. Modus Operandi/ and the earlier stuff is just SO good, so for sure I'll be dissappointed. You might check out the new Klute full length, should be out soon (can't remember the exact date) but sounds nice if you're looking for good dnb. later, aronne _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
