My ears are still ringing, and I think they will be for quite some time. The show was held at the House of Blues in Downtown Disney, which ended out working great - no cash for parking, no worries about safety or my car getting stolen... Just had to put up with Disney crap everywhere on the way in. ;p The venue was excellent, great lighting system and sound system, but it seems that Orbital packed their own... Their stage setup was rather minimal, alot less gear than I had expected. Just a few stacks of midi-controlled gear and a one octave keyboard on the sides, and what looked like a large midi-controller board or mixing board. Phil kept changing out cardboard "sticks" every song which I'm guessing identified individual track names/numbers for each track. He'd pick some up off the side and lay 'em down on the board up front board somewhere half out of sight, replacing the ones that were on there from the next track. Paul (in the back on the right, ostensibly tweaking the gear) seemed to have very little to do while Phil pressed the occasional button on the main board and played with the stuff on the left side. Not an altogether exciting stage presence, but the rest of the stage was set up magnificently with some very interesting background video projected onto moving cardboard-ish cutout things with small spherical bumps on em. Quite cool in practice. :) I can't remember the entire set list... They opened with the Doctor Who Theme along with Funny Break after that. I remember hearing The Girl With The Sun In Her Head quite vividly - I had fallen asleep to that song the last time I slept sometime on Thursday. ;) Also heard Tootled, a highly rearranged Illuminate, Satan was a crowd favorite, and after disliking the album version for years I can safely say that the live version was fookin wicked. Their last song before the amazing encore was Impact. The encore started with a different Doctor Who mix and ended with a long, drawn out version of Chime. The most enjoyable stuff for me was the experimental beats they played with between tracks and even during tracks. Just about every track had some severe improv thrown on, even if it was just channel mixing. It sounded amazing to me as someone that's heard most of the tracks thousands and thousands of times the same damn way... It was a good crowd, but I wasn't dancing. I ended up sitting upstairs watching the show from the top tier of the balcony. Dead center. Got to watch both the dance floor and P&P - was really cool. Hell, just getting to see P&P was really, really cool. Obligitory "oh, if you were there statement": I was the kid in the dirtyshirt that didn't talk or dance, just sat there in awe lookin goofy. If you saw me, good for you. ;) BTW, smuggled my Pentax K1000 in there and tried about 5 long exposure shots, if they worked out you'll see 'em pop up somewhere on kalie.net ... Anyway, it was an experience I'll take with me for the rest of my life... I've never seen anything like that, the volume and energy were cranked up to 11, and the crowd *loved* it - even if the brothers weren't in their best form (a few of the new tracks didn't go over 100% well, like Oi!) Now I need some sleep.... I almost fell asleep on the drive out there, so now that i'm back and the adrenaline's wearing off i'm about to collapse. If any dirts were there it's too bad we didn't get to chat, but I did run into a few random Underworld fans... ;) -Kalie Ma # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Steve=20Price?= Subject: (orbital) Last email - meetups on USA tour - other stuff Date: 07 Oct 2001 15:30:49 +0100 (BST) Anyone who does want to meetup that hasnt emailed then do now....webmaster@loopz.co.uk. Silence Repellent and a crew of 5 others just caught Orbital 3 times in 3 nights. Our journey began on Thursday night when we headed from Miami up to Tampa, Fl to pick up 2 more for the ride. Friday morning we packed the cars and headed out, destination Atlanta. After an 8 hour drive we arrived and headed to our hotel. In the lobby we met up with fellow Orbital listee Shannon+on+on and his wife Dawn. Checked in and had just enough time to catch a nap and bite to eat. Friday, October 5: We walked a grueling 1 block to get to the club, Earthlink Live. When we walked in was a bit surprised to hear Adnans being played by the dj. The dance floor wasn't huge, but big enough that those who wanted to dance had room. The others sat in their seats and watched on. Orbital took the stage at 10:15 and started cranking out Tension. They whipped through their set, playing some classics and most of the new album. Stand out tracks of the night were Satan, DR. ? and Chime. They did seem to be having some technical difficulties. Nothing major like the show stopping, but just volume issues with certain sounds and percussion. P&P kept pointing at different channels and making gestures to get the sound raised. After the show we all hung around, hoping to catch P&P so we could chat for a bit. Silence Repellent also wanted to get our demo in the hands of P&P. When security started rushing us off the dance floor I figured my best shot was to hand it to Mickey Mann, their sound man. So I gave him our demo and expressed my appreciation and gratitude for Orbital and their music. We waited about an hour until they closed the club and headed back to the hotel. SR was missing 1 member, Jimmee Ruckus. We had seen him head in a different direction, through a doorway. After about 20 minutes in the room, Jimmee comes in. "Where were you?" we asked. "I was chillin' with P&P!!!" Yep, he was backstage with the brothers for about an hour. Just hangin' talking to Phil mostly who he said was just super cool, and just so happy to be making music and doing what he loves. Jimmee passed our demo along to both brothers as well as others backstage. Unfortunately Jimmee didn't have anything that they could sign, Oh that's not a problem. P or P, don't remember which one, hunted around and got 2 Funny Break singles and they both signed them and gave them to Jimmee. Pretty cool! Saturday, October 6: It's now Saturday, and we're heading to Orlando. The gig is in Downtown Disney, at The House of Blues. The club itself is very large, and a great size dance floor. We're all chillin' behind the soundboard, i talked to Mickey again, mentioning that i'd love to plug my MD in to the soundboard, he said he'd check on it. The dj before Orbital went on was playing some really cool tunes, getting the crowd fired up and ready to dance. Next thing you know, Paul is at the soundboard, right in front of us. We step to him and introduce ourselves. He's very polite and nice. Have a few minutes to express our gratitude and love of their music. We mention that he got our demo last night, and he said he'd be listening to it on his 20 hour bus ride from Miami to D.C. Our boy Lightfinger asked what happened to Are We Here? because it was in the European leg of the tour, but not in the gig we saw the previous night. Paul said he felt that it just didn't' fit in to the set well. Fair enough. Orbital took to the stage at about 11:15. This time the music from A Clockwork Orange was playing. The curtain still hung down, the music played out, and the curtain lifted. There was P&P headlamps on, backlit by purple lights. Awesome! The boys jammed tonight. Everything sounded tighter than the previous night. The visuals were stunning and the crowd was loving it. Highlights include Tension, Tootled and Dr ? again. The panning and crazy mindfuck that they are doing with Dr ? who is brilliant. Tonight the boys close the first set with Impact. Where as the previous night it was part of the encore. The show finishes and we head towards home, Miami. Sunday, October 7 Since were at home, the crew going to this show has doubled in size. I arrive at the venue and find that it is the smallest of the 3 so far. Very club and bar like, not really a dance environment. The stage space is limited. I'm hangin' out having a drink when I see Paul coming down from upstairs. I run over to him and get signatures on the cd covers i had brought with me. I look to my right and there is Lightfinger chatting it up with Phil. Pretty cool, cuz Light and I arrived at different times, yet we both managed to spot P&P and spend a few minutes with them. I told Phil that i thought the previous show was fuckin' awesome, and that they sounded tight. I also commented on the strange venue here, Billboard Live. Phil kind of shrugged his shoulders and agreed. I just told him to go out and have fun, and that the crowd would get in to it. This was not only a small venue, but also the smallest turn out of people to see Orbital of the 3 shows. I kind of expected this cuz Miami IS FUCKIN' LAME when it comes to music. The other times Orbital has been here for other tours the turn out was weak. This town is just too much in to house music and boring club music, god damn South Beach. The great thing about this gig, was that we were about 3 feet away from the stage and P&P. With the small crowd and limited space, it made for a very intimate setting. Our own private Orbital concert is what it felt like it. The only negative of this show was that the visuals were hampered by the lack of space. The tiles that usually acts as a backdrop for the visuals, just hung on the sides of the stage, without every coming in to use. The same set as the other two, but much more improv in this one. After a few songs the crowd really started getting in to it. P&P were getting a kick out of it, actually being able to look in to the crowd and see faces, see who was yelling and having a good time. Tonight's top tracks were Illuminate, Impact and well I won't say cuz i don't want to spoil it for those who don't know the set list. This show they put Impact back in the encore. Although, they did have a little trouble getting the track started. "Just a little technical difficulties" they explained. After only 30 seconds wait, they tore in to Impact. This sounded tight, the build up was awesome, and never lost momentum. Both P&P seemed to have a great time at this gig. Constantly laughing and giving the thumbs up to the crowd. One of the best moments came at the end of the show. As they're wrapping up Chime, Paul takes off his headlamps, like the show is over, but Phil is still tweaking the 303 noise. He stares at Paul, exchanges a few quick words. Paul walks back over to the sequencers, brings back the rim shot, claps, Boom! drops the beat backs in, they improv for another minute and then close the show. But just what a way to go out, the 2 of them up there, having fun, Phil not wanting to quit, giving something extra to the crowd who screamed and danced like hell. So now it's back to normal business. I just spent 3 of the best nights of my life with some great friends, gettin' down to Orbital. P&P have been my biggest influence musically, and i hope we can relate to our fans just like Orbital does. Unfortunately my attempts at recording the gigs didn't pan out. Oh well, would have been nice, but i do have the memories. Special thanks to Shannon, Dawn, Kulsoom, Mick, and Kenny who we met up with in Atlanta. How do you feel about venturing into the harsher side of the sound spectrum? In particular, have drum'n'bass or jungle influenced your work at all? (Listening to "Meltdown" makes me think so.) - What is your opinion on software-based synthesizers, such as Native Instruments Reaktor? It seems that there is a trend to move from hardware-based synths and effects into cheaper software-based equivalents. What do you think of this trend? (Or am I on crack?) - Do you ever feel that, because of the existing Orbital fans, your music has to stay within certain sound or styles? In other words, if you significantly change direction of your music, you risk disappointing thousands of fans. How does this affect you? Do you care? - Would you produce a track or two for Madonna? - Have you ever thought of using live drums or percussion on your shows? - Where do you think your music is heading? Do you keep expanding your musical interests? How do the new interests influence your music? - In your opinion, what are some of the most exciting developments in electronic music today? - How and where do you imagine yourselves 30 years from now? Getting to my place is easy, and I'm a five-minute car ride from the venue. I figure we can meet before the show (say, 7-ish) for handshakes and consolidating travel to the venue, then hang out here after the show until whenever. I have a pretty nice party facility in the basement. Stereo, satellite TV, full bar, pool table, darts, fireplace. It's a pretty comfortable place to hang out with a group people. If anyone in Seattle wants to go to the LA show next week, I have a plane ticket I won't be using. Wednesday night I booked the flight, and yesterday I was told I'd be in San Deigo for work all next week. So I'll be able to go, but I don't need the ticket. Id wnat to hear style and halcyon but unfortunately they werent on the playlist. 2 hours of pure and live "good" music was too much for me, and when the bros left the stage, i tried to get to backstage to try to chat with them but the guards didnt let me. and headed home with the echoing sounds in my ears... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? (opened with tension, closed with impact, dr who-> chime.) ahh, the encore. impact, as expected, blew my mind. phil tweaked the hell out of that beat-up 303 and it was beautiful. you could tell that with this track as well as chime, countless live playings have turned them into these huge epic performances, with quite a bit of improv going on. they talked to each other a bit from time to time - i'd love to know what they were saying. ("should we bring such-and-such noise back in?" "you forgot to drop the spoken segment after the last build!" who knows...) yeah, so it was amazing. i was less excited about dr. who, but as it morphed into chime it quickly became a real stomper. they interchanged parts at will, more insane 303 twiddling, multiple builds and releases, etc. it was absurd. i loved it. yeah, so big surprise: orbital is a great live act. go see 'em. although if you plan on standing right at the front you might think of bringing earplugs. 17 hours later my ears are still ringing a bit... cheers, nub # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Shaun Rader" Subject: (orbital) Orbital in Hollywood Date: 24 Oct 2001 00:40:20 -0700 This is for anyone going to the Hollywood show this Thursday.. it looks like they have changed the venue from the Palladium to the Palace.
