My fave is probably the 16 and a half minute opener 'Juanita', but the others are all awesome. It really is better than 'dubnobass..'. A couple of excursions into drum'n'bass territory , a heavy acid thummper, and a beatless guitar thing a bit like 'tongue' on 'dubnobasss..', all make for a varied and consistently excellent album. Buy it or you'll regret it. Also, a handy hint, if you add on the three tracks from the 'Born slippy' CD, it all adds up to 100 mins, ideal for taping. Jon. The latest albumn 'The next chapter in dub' is also definately worth a listen. Date: 14 Mar 1996 14:55:57 GMT Actually, RSW have been around for longer and have done lots more. Started off in about '87 at least, I think based in London, and have done lots in roughtly this order: Kray Twins 12" (A wonderful News At 10 Opening) Cocaine Sex 12" Biting My Nails 12" (Knock on wood sample ahoy!) Probably a Robbery 12" (a bit of a hit!) Soundclash LP A deleted import 12" called The Phantom (using a brilliant sample of White Riot) Space Gladiator 12" Biting My Nails 12"s rereleased. In Dub LP Thunder II 12" Women respind to Base 12" Kray Twins and Cocaine sex 12"s rereleased. Howyadoin' LP Brixton 12" The second chapter of dub LP. Generally they seem to do a normal LP followed by an LP of dub versions of the previous LP and singles (no vocals, lots more bass, many more samples). Tenuous Orbital connection: Their use of samples is about more advanced than anyone else I've heard (including P&P). Especially on the Dub albumns, expect to hear some very unusual tunes (easy listening, classical piano, anything) woven in with the bass lines for anything upto thirty second sections or so. Basically its not a tune with samples over the top, its using the sample as another instrument in the song. Interesting if nothing else. Two years ago the Orb was there and this year besides Orbital there's Underworld and the chemical brothers as well. It's a three day festival but I don't know about the other days exactly. I thought I'd let you know. Mazzel, Sanne. ...SB... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "'Nick...'" Subject: Love Parade '96. Date: 21 Mar 1996 11:47:55 GMT I'm currntly surfing the web, and i've come across http://www.techno.net There is a section on the love parade '96 there are two versions one in English and one in German, so they probably are in the know about it. There's apparently a love parade in Australia this year as well. There's also pictures/interviews/articles about previous Berlin Love Parades. If your thinking about going or want further info, i'd surf your way to the techno.net web-sight. I just heard that Orbital are playing at the Quart festival in Kristiansund, Norway this summer! (Along with Leftfield, Ken Ishii and Chemical Brothers!) I saw them there two years ago, needless to say I'm looking forward to seeing them again! Date: 28 Mar 1996 14:40:38 -0400 Hello silent friends, at around 10 minutes to midnight Atlantic time (1 hour later than Eastern Standard), I saw a report on CNN detailing the forays of Playboy (a new edition feat. local talent) and Chippendales (A male stripping franchise, for you lucky ones as yet unaware of this institution) into the Russian market. They showed a few excerpts of the Chippendale's show. The meatheads were dancing about to the sound of the Psykick Warriors ov Gaia remix of Lush. I guess Orbital does have universal appeal! This isn't the first time I've heard Orbital as clothing removal music...any of you who have seen Kiss of Death (w/ Davis Caruso and Nicholas Cage) will remember that Lush also appears in this Cage's snazzy strip club. Halcyon was in Mortal Kombat...any other examples? Anyone? "I've sung a lot of songs, I've made some bad rhymes." Date: 28 Mar 1996 19:42:01 GMT I'm out here. I'm always out here! :-> Is anybody going to Underworld on Sat. 'cos i'm not, n' right pissed off about it too. Here's a good clean joke to perk you all up a bit. Not sexist, racist, homophobic or anythingistic really. Well except perhaps Software Housist or Careerist. But hey! Don't blame me... i didn't write it. A Microsoft Programmer and a Boeing Engineer were sitting next to each other on an airplane. The Programmer leans over to the Engineer and asks if he wants to play a fun game. The Engineer just wants to sleep so he politely declines, turns away and tries to sleep. The Programmer persists and explains that it's a real easy game. He explains,"I ask a question and if you don't know the answer you pay me $5. Then you ask a question and if I don't know the answer I'll pay you $5." Again the Engineer politely declines and tries to sleep. The Programmer, now somewhat agitated, says, "O.K., if you don't know the answer you pay me $5 and if I don't know the answer I pay you $50!" Now, that got the Engineer's attention, so he agrees to the game. The Programmer asks the first question, "What's the distance to from the earth to the moon?" Then Engineer doesn't say a word and just hands the Programmer $5. Now, its the Engineer's turn. He asks the Programmer,"What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down on four?" The Programmer looks at him with a puzzled look, takes out his laptop computer, looks through all his references and after about an hour hands the Engineer $50. (He also tried his sponi rigonoiser -Psion- 'cos he's that sad!!) The Engineer politely takes the $50 turns away and tries to sleep. The Programmer, a little miffed, asks, "Well what's the answer to the question?" Without a word, the Engineer reaches into his wallet, hands $5 to the Programmer turns away and tries to sleep. Sorry if you've heard it before. It sounds vaguely familiar but i had to laugh. I don't know what coasts you're talking about, but my guess is you were never in NYC. If you really, really can't find it any other way, you could mail me a money order or check for around $10 and I could ship it to you. Let me check to make sure it's still in stock first, but last time I was there they had at least 4 copies. (Apologies to non-UK peeps). I just caught the end of it, and as I only heard it once I can't really judge - but I was _not_ impressed. It had a good groove, and the drum track sounded OK (as ever), but what was the Spanish guitar doing? A friend taped it and did confirm that it sounded strange to him too. Oh dear. I mentioned it before on this list, and I'm sorry but to me they are sounding more and more like Genesis. Sure, a band needs to progress and evolve if it is still going to produce music worth listening to, but IMHO Orbital seem to losing their touch. I reserve any proper judgement until I've heard the new album, but I'm having my doubts already. A concerned Tim in London. mail : cunnellt@logica.com ps. To all you die-hard 'don't diss Orbital' chaps : I'm not indulging in slagging for the sake of it - I'm a big Orbital 'fan'. I've seen them many times (in London, Glastonbury festivals, Amsterdam (oscill8), Munich (TG 96) ........) and they _always_ come up with the goods, I'm just concerned that they have lost that certain special 'something'. You know what I mean. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: DR RHYTHM Subject: Unidentified subject!
