It's by far his worst album ever. and I know I'm definitely not the only one of that opinion. it just plain SUCKS. that's from someone who has almost all of oldfields albums on cd or lp (no lp player here anymore though :( > what he did in the 70's and 80's doesn't please me much from >what i've heard of it. Eventually I'll find out what the last album >before TB2 was and buy it to see. I think he did Amarok before TB2, a strange album, 1 track, 60 minutes, zillions of various parts, some weird, some funny, some damn cool. Some people hate it, some people like it, some people love it (I used to :) What I like most about his stuff is the instrumental sections, like on Islands (awesome stuff), Discovery (the lake is fabulous), Five Miles Out (excellent album in general), Crises (another good album) and Platinum (has some really beautiful moments). so what would I suggest? well, if you like your music with lots of all kinds of guitars and synths and styles, he's a good one to check out, he's done lots of good stuff. He's also done quite a few good pop/ballad tunes, but also some really weak ones ;) >I don't know but I'd expect a new album to come out within one year, if >he keeps to the steady rythm of his last albums... Can't wait to hear >that. I hope he hasn't fallen in love with the celtic style, because even >though he did it good in the voyager, it's to big a limitation on him I >believe! heh, voyager is the only album I havn't listened to yet. But I dunno if he'd stick to that one style, he has always ranged about in his music... just remember, whatever you do, stay out of his Heavens Door (curiously enough, the album is credited to Michael Oldfield, NOT Mike Oldfield....) It is by far his worst album to date and then some. The last track on the cd is so bizarre, it's not even funny. lots of all kinds of tracks and ideas and sounds and whatnots... and they only last a few seconds each. 20 minutes of that... oddity. what the man was thinking there I will probably never know, nor do I think I really want to know. now playing: Lightflow: Aural Planet (trance ambient by polish dudes, love it) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Morey Gamble" Subject: Re: (orbital) The Songs of Distant Earth....... I havn't always been able to go into record shops and listen to stuff, and I'm not made of money so I used to go for the compilations first a lot of the time...one of the best I came across in the past few years was the Trance Europe Express compilations on Volume records..you get 4 LP's with god knows how many artists on there...compilations 1 and 2 I can't really fault...oh and you also get nice little books, with small interviews, pictures...(Orbital included too). Beyond records, which I think is now dead but...If you like both Orbital and The Orb this could well be to your liking too. They put out...4 compilations, I think...under the titles of Ambient Dub..vol1..vol2..etc. i hope these are still being distributed, they deserve to be. Again the first 2...I found out about some artists called Higher Intelligence Agency through these 2, who do some very s p a c e d o u t electronic...err..soundscapes, they've done a few LP's and a few projects with other people all very good experimental ambient lp's. In summary some LP's that changed my life (other than Orbital, they didn't change my life..they are my life...!) Here goes...Artificial Intelligence 1..Warp records. Trance Europe Express volume 1...Volume records. Ambient Dub volume 2 on Beyond Records. Model500 - Classics , or possibly Detroit:Emotions Electric on Network records. I'm sure I've missed a whole load of great stuff...like the P.W.O.G. (Psychick Warriors of Gaia) LP...Ov Biosperes and sacred grooves ! (stunning ambient/trance lp) Or even Eon's LP..Void Dweller ! (not ambient at all) But I'm wasting a lot of space and I don't want to clog up the list too much. Time to go... on my turntable...Tortoise:Millions now will never die. on my desk...a cup of tea -- --mark[dot]sd[at]virgin[dot]net & icq:1223078 --http://graffiti.virgin.net/mark.sd/home.htm -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Joona =?iso-8859-1?Q?P=F6yh=F6nen?= Subject: (orbital) Spacetime Continuum Date: 04 May 1998 09:37:50 +0300 I just bought my first Spacetime Continuum ep called REALtime...anyone else has this one? He opened for Orbital on a good chunk of the In Sides tour here in the US (not at any of the shows I saw, unfortunately). His work in the past has been primarily ambient, but he seems to be getting less and less ambient with each release. His first album is called "Sea Biscuit" and it is without a doubt one of the most incredible ambient albums ever released. A classic. His second is called 'Emit Ecaps' and is almost equally as good. It's more upbeat, very jazzy feeling (he used to be a jazz drummer). He uses the best sounding synths of anybody out there, as far as I'm concerned, with the possible exception of Orbital. He also released a CD of remixes of Emit called 'Remit Recaps'. I think it's the weakest of his CD's, mainly since he sort of gave everyone and their brother a go at remixing his songs. Some of them are quite good, and some are definitely lacking.. If its Numan you can bet that Howlett's next project will be more toned down (after all, how could ANYONE sing over stuff as volatile as Prodigy's stuff?), more musical and less reliant on big beats. I think its really sick that there is a market for something like that. Watching people die is not something I would consider even remotely close to entertainment. ** Keep that attitude, you'll need it later in life when our society gets worse. Face it, our society is starting to fall apart. What we want to see is not the chase, but the kill. Chase scenes cannot satisfy our desires anymore. We want to see the kill. Why else would we watch that ever so long, extremely slow speed OJ Simpson chase? Because we wanted to see The END of it. We like to see the downfall of other humans. Just like in Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, when the mechanical hound is chasing Montag and it's all over live news.. Montag manages to get away. Know what happens next? It essentially switches to a scripted performance.. in the end, they corner an innocent man on the street and he is killed by the Hound.. the news is declaring "Oh look, there's Montag".. the shots are out of focus so even his best friends wouldn't be able to identify him.. The society of Fahrenheit 451 would have been very upset if they didn't get to see the kill. What about our society? Remember a few years ago when they started coming out with those videos of animals attacking animals and we thought it was gross? Then it became videos of animals attacking people. Now it's people getting mangled, dismembered, whatever.. all in the comfort of your living room! It used to be daring for a movie to contain a scene of one person kissing another. What used to be an R rated movie now might be rated PG-13.. Even movies that get rated R in the states are generally AA (adult accompaniment) here in Canada which means you can't see them alone unless you're 14 or older. What are we letting our children watch? Hell.. our society's desensitized to violence (and just about everything else), just admit it. When I was growing up not so long ago, I watched stuff like care bears and and gummi bears and rainbow brite and sesame street.. wait, I still do on occasion. Er.. there was a point. Oh yeah. Now look at what the kids watch. All those super violent power rangers type shows. A certain degree of violence is acceptable.. but I believe childrens' programming should contain morals.. where are the morals in those shows? There isn't any. And since television is raising the children these days.. isn't there something wrong with that? And Matt, if you feel sick about that guy who shot himself on the freeway in LA.... a gurl I know from IRC lives about 10 mintues from there. She got to see the news choppers and all that kinda shit. She actually did go and be sick. They didn't show it on the news here.. at least I didn't see it.. but my mom was saying that they would. I'm glad I didn't see it. Ever heard the saying "A person is smart, people are stupid"? It means that an individual thinking rationally will more often than not come to the right conclusion. The problem is that humans have something of a herd mentality. The music business is one of the best examples of that. People buy things because they fit a certain style or formula. (But that's true everywhere else, too). You get a large group of people together, even people that disagree will begin to come around. Unfortunately, most people use this mentality to gain a profit, and not to help things. It will work both ways, but I think most people that could use this in a positive way also realize that it's not really right to manipulate people in this manner. > Are people only looking for attention? They have two albums that I am aware of. The first is Mind Fruit. It's the album with "It's a Fine Day" (and we all know about "It's a Fine Day"). It's from '92, right around the same time as the brown album. Guru Mother came out in '94 (i think) and is quite good. I like both albums, but Mind Fruit has more standout songs. Guru Mother is a lot more mature sounding. (If you can call Opus III mature). You can still find the "It's a Fine Day" maxi-single if you look hard enough. It has the original version and a coule of other interesting mixes, plus 2 mixes of 'Evolution Rush', one of which is remixed by Moby. -Morey # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Morey Gamble" Subject: Re: (orbital) halcyon. ah HAH! I used to have his latest album "The Analogue Theater". It's a decent album, just not my style. I'd say most of it fits into the 'brain-frying-yet-still-somewhat-melodic' techno category. Most of it was just a little more intense than I generally like, but it's definitely well done. -Morey gandalf@wnc.com good people better rise up together and join hands with one heart and one mind good people better rise up soon # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Morey Gamble" Subject: Re: (orbital) more weird shit Date: 06 May 1998 17:34:01 +0000 > again was browing orbital album ar and shit and starting thinking.. > vocals.. are we here and sad but true by Alison goldtrapp.. whats the > story on this girl>? What about our society? You are right, and it's all caused by power struggle. The media is abused and misinformation is given for the benefit of not the government, but for the corporations. Innocent people die for another persons wealth, money and power arn't evil..people like to blame market forces because it's convenient..if you use money and power for good things it's good but that's not the way it's directed, it's directed thoughtlessly and selfishly and we just end up screwing things up...which just leads to more power struggle. It's made easy for you to go along with this setup...think about it, whose benefit. People are made out to be inherently evil and a threat rather than to be helped, and death is sold as peace. That is why people look for the kill, it's a quick fix, they don't understand the bigger picture because it's not given & most don't want to try. People also like to see people doing well, occasionally, don't forget that, and if they could most people would rather see positive than negative. I watch that guy on TV set his car on fire and then eventually shoot himself and while I was slightly disturbed by the fact that he was did this to himself, I think the media had every right to show this on television. As a matter of fact, I myself was angry at the fact that some news stations here decided that whenever they felt he might go ahead and dispose of himself, theyd cut to a shot of the freeway that was blocked off due to his beef with the HMOs. This came off to me as the media shielding our eyes from this which is essentially pretending that its not happening. Incidences like these must be seen or we'll become a world of people who are unaware of the long and short term consequences of death. As for the sniveling ninnies out here in LA that were complaining about the fact that on some networks it interrupted the mind numbing drudgery we call kids' afternoon cartoons(whatever happened to go-bots?): These same type of people that are using this as an excuse to complain are the same people who will take their children to rated 'R' movies like interview with a vampire and the like!!!! How's that for double standards? Every year they do studies on the number of kids that are allowed to view these movies and they are younger and younger every year. The problem isnt with the media showing these images, Its with the parents that allow their children to view acts of violence without discussing and distinguishing right from wrong with their children so that items like these dont happen again. Enough Rambling From The Very Asleep: .MatthewFord. "A Young Loner On A Crusade To Champion The Innocent, The Helpless, The Powerless In A World Of Criminals Who Operate ABOVE The Law." P.S. Ok..one more question. WHY do they want attention. What for ! And > what does it mean if they manage to get it ? Oops, thats two... People like to feel like they're not alone. If you can get someone's attention, then whatever you're doing or going through, that person is to a degree as well. The reasons are different for different people. I honestly think there's a pretty good chance that TV has a lot to do with it. I'm not saying that it's TV's fault, but too many parents have let their children be raised and baby-sat by television. Kids grow up starved for human attention of any kind. I know a girl who admits that her mother always plopped her down in front of the TV when she was too busy to be bothered. This girl grew up in this situation, and now she has to have constant attention of one kind or another, or she is absolutely unbearable. She gets edgy if the TV is turned off. She needs the hum of it in the air. (I'm not making this up) She would rather have the tv on with static and the sound turned down that have it turned off. I try not to hold it against her, as it's not really her fault, but it's a direct product of lazy parenting. Note: I don't make any claims about knowing how to raise a child. I merely believe that the aforementioned method of dealing with children is not acceptable. If children are raised by TV, they can grow up feeling as if they need to seek the approval of the television world. This is just my opinion, but I think there's probably some truth buried in all that babble. -Morey gandalf@wnc.com The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Price, Steve A" Subject: (orbital) Gary Numan Date: 07 May 1998 19:17:53 +0100 Didnt see a reply to "who is Gary Numan" (spelt in various ways...). I've heard he's ambient but that can cover a > fairly wide range of things. Banco de Gaia is incredible. One of my very favorite artists. (Well, I guess he's got a full band with him now..) Most banco stuff sits somewhere in between trance and ambient. He released 3 or 4 albums in the very early 90's but those were only released on cassette and sold at his shows, good luck finding them. He has released 4 full-length CD's that are still readily available. The first one is from '94 and is called 'Maya'. It's by far the most upbeat of all of them. Very trancey, but on the mellow side, occasional breakbeats Best songs (i think) are Heliopolis, Mafich Arabi, Qurna, And Lai Lah. All of his stuff has a very far eastern feel to it. Kinda like Transglobal underground or Loop Guru but much less so (and much better, too). I _very_ highly reccomend this album. His second was from '95 and is called 'Last Train to Lhasa'. It's overall a lot mellower even than Maya, but also an incredible album. Best songs - Last Train to Lhasa, Kincajou, China, White Paint. (The US version at least has a bonus disc featuring, among other things, a 36-minute remix of kincajou that's just amazing). His next album was 'Live at Glastonbury'. It's probably the album that best represents his 'sound', being mainly stuff from the first two albums, as well as an older song or two. Best songs - All of it. His newest album is called "Big Men Cry", and this one was recorded with a full band. He even added Dick Parry on sax (this is the guy that played on 'Dark Side of the Moon' and 'Wish You Were Here). This album, while not quite as amazing as his other albums, is still really damn good. Best songs - Celestine, Drunk as a Monk, Big Men Cry, Gates does Windows. Wow, I didn't realize I had that much to say. Anyway, check this stuff out, anyone that hasn't. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: endermaker@juno.com (Ender L Wright) Subject: Re: (orbital) the box Date: 08 May 1998 18:56:00 -0400 >has anyone ever really thought about the box? i have both insides w/ >bonus >cd's. on the first issue of in sides.......there are two versions of >the box. >well, that's a given. on the times fly ep there is the box ( the long >version >). the long version has four parts to it. thus, making the box six >sided. >either i have way to much time on my hands or i'm just really bored. >well, >north central texas. i think it's both. =) > >burrito > >p.s. i do realize that i was rambling and made hardly any sense wow, sorry but that really just caught my attention, since there are some at least semi- deep thinkers maybe I can get the answer to a question I've been wondering about for a while, "why is luch divided into numbers (the box is not) while all of them begin with 3 (3-X) just wondering, and I live in the US so does anyone know where I can get a copy of Halcyon? thanx for your time and space... -Ender _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I was just at a concert. It was the Mathew Good Band who totally kick ass. (alternative incase you're wondering) The band was excellent live, but the crowd was so shitty. Since the guy grew up in my neighbourhood, he held a cheap concert at the local rec. center. This drew the attention of total dipshit people. There was a mosh pitt of course which was fine. I was in it found it to be stupid because of all the homies (def: people who think that they are rappers or gang bangers). All they did was push people around. During the concert, one guy got the shit kicked out of by a group of people, some chick who was crowd surfing got pulled down by some guy and thrown to the ground. This girl was taken away on a stretcher and she had blood pouring down her face. One of my friends who was crowd surfing got thrown on to the ground. A security guard threw some girl head first into a metal fence type baricade. It was pretty bad to see all of this. It almost ruined the concert for me. But anyway, now my point, why do people feel that it's necessary to do this kind of shit. I can see if it was all accidents, but they were all intentional things. If I were ripping people off using the internet, I would probably use several e-mail addresses and possibly even names (and have friends cash the checks) to operate the Bad-Trade scam. I would hope that people would not think to put my mailing address on BAD TRADER posts, so that all I would have to do is get a new e-mail and name, and I'd be back in business. ======== I would be less likely to have several mailing addresses, because I wouldn't feel like I could trust my friends to give me the money and the tapes (or whatever) because they are obviously dishonest like me to begin with. KUDOS AND WARM APPLAUSE TO THE GENTLEMAN WHO POSTED THE BAD TRADER'S FULL ADDRESS. I APPRECIATE IT AND WILL TAKE NOTE OF IT. I've been an Orbital fan for as long as I can remember.. since I first bought the green album on a whim (when that was the only thing available).. While it is an excellent (one of the absolute best I've heard) mix CD, I think it should be noted that Last Train to Lhasa is pitched up to about +6 on this CD and has quite a different mood than when played at regular speed. It's still cool, but if you hear this, don't expect all Banco de Gaia to sound like this. This CD also has (if it's the same one I have, which it suddenly occurs to me that it may not be) FSOL, William Orbit, Rabbit-in-the-Moon, Apollo 440, God Within (Scott Hardkiss) and a coupla other really groovy songs. -Morey gandalf@wnc.com We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars. -Oscar Wilde # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Steve Wright Subject: Re: (orbital) Gaia Date: 13 May 1998 18:43:52 +0100 I agree on that one also there Renascence 3cd collection was also very good, introduced me to Fluke and Leftfield : ) Steve Morey Wrote: It's still cool, but if you hear this, don't expect all Banco de Gaia to sound like this. If you don't mind a pounding, 4-on-the-floor, 909 kick drum, then it's excellent trance. They (I think UJ is just Simon Berry and one of his various partners)) actually throws in some really nice breakdowns, and as far as I'm concerned is the king of the arpeggiator. There are a few Union Jack songs on "Platipus Records Volume 1 - The Ultimate Dream Collection", which should not be too hard to find and is quite worth checking out. There are some other Simon Berry songs on there as well (Poltergeist and Art of Trance) that are pretty cool. It also has 'Two Full Moons and a Trout". -Morey gandalf@wnc.com peace in the struggle to find peace comfort on the way to comfort # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: AJ_Brustein@Brewsternet.com Subject: Re: (orbital) Top 10's? I think I should also recommend the Leftfield triple LP version of "Leftism" with a remix of "Cut For Life", Paul Van Dyk's 12" version of Forbidden Fruit, and the Salt Tank "Eugina" single. Destined to be included in a top 10 along these lines. Where can I order Inner city (FSOL mix) and React 2 Rhythm stuff? Date: 13 May 1998 23:44:16 -0400 (EDT) As I purchase a insane amount of electronica CDs looking for all the great tunes.. I'd love to hear reviews and impressions of new purchases.. describing what it sounds like etc, etc. I just picked up - Urbal Beats 2. It features 2 CDs, one of new electronica and one of "classics". Most of it is drum and bass with some rap stuff thrown in here and there. It has a remix of Prodigy's Smack My B*tch Up that is pretty good and a song "Treat Infamy" by Rest Assured that I have never heard before. It uses a sample from The Verve's uh.. Symphony song that you hear all the time. Cool tune. There's several Roni Size-like songs on here, like DJ Die vs. DJ Shadow's What Does Your Soul Look Like? Prodigy also mixed Method Man's Release Yo' Self (it'll also be on the upcoming Amp 2).. sounds great and naturally has some rap. Overall it is pretty decent; though pricey at around $18. The Classics features Orbital's Chime, Prodigy's Charly, Moby's Go and Utah Saints Something Good among others.. most are standard mixes. I'm at work an doing these titles by memory. This might not seem like a big deal, but I've got over 1000 albums so it becomes hard to memorize them after a while. In no particular order and trying not to double up on one artist: 1) Squarepusher - (1st track on Big Loada, I think it's...) Journey to Reedham (7am mix) 2) Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy 3) The Prodigy - Wind It Up (Rewind mix) 4) Orbital - Kein Trink Wasser 5) System 7 - Interstate 6) Moby - That's When I Reach for My Revolver (the Rollo and Sister Bliss mix) 7) Nine Inch Nails - Perfect Drug (Meat Beat Manifesto mix) 8) 808 State - Pacific (after all these years, this is still a great song) 9) DJ Shadow - Home Base 10) Towa Tei - Sound Museum (ooh the horns man) Now, on to Kein Trink Wasser. As you can see, that is my favorite Orbital song. Why? Because of the beauty and complexity. It may seem like chopsticks to the average person, but try to follow the fast piano bit on the piano yourself. The song has really great layering and each piano line compliments the other, there is no sound that overrides another. The song, even though it is built around repetition, never becomes stagnant or boring. You've got your slower piano then fast piano then string-synth. Then you get silence for a split second and the bassline then drums and synth-percussion. And then the gloriously taylored sounds of the first part come in again, just when you want them to. P&P give you plenty of the bass and beats first then pull in the piano again. Sure it is the same piano bit, but since it was so brilliantly crafted to begin with, why would I mind if it is used later? Notice how the beats, bass, and percussion also compliment the piano so very well and how nothing becomes muddled. This song is exactly what it's title implies, for me. Listen to it very loud in a car (or home) with exceptional bass and you will go utterly, exstatically, mental. If I'm not completely mistaken, I think that this bonus cd/Orbital 2 is the TRU CD version where you have the normal Orbital 2 on one disc and the John Peel Sessions on the other disc (the one with Lush (Euro-tunnel disaster '94) Walk about Semi-detached Attached .) So it's worth getting for the nice layout on the two discs themselves, but the songs aren't rare though. just two readily available releases in one go. :) at least, i think it is that one. + "couldn't this lengthy treatment be replaced by tranquilising drugs?" + +-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-+ + trym asserson + ceetba@cee.hw.ac.uk + http://www.cee.hw.ac.uk/~ceetba/ + # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Silvio R Subject: Re: (orbital) top ten Date: 14 May 1998 17:28:34 +0200 Hello there! my TopTen of electronica: 1. I almost put the original version of hipgnosis on my list. If you like that song, you should check out the full albums from Electric Skychurch and Cirrus. Cirrus has sort of been touted as the american Prodigy. That's not really accurate, but it's a pretty cool album. Very melodic breakbeat stuff.. Electric Skychurch I could go on about for quite awhile (since they're sorta vaguely friends of mine). Their first album "Knowoneness" was mostly ambient, but their latest ep (which is still almost 2 years old) Together is much more upbeat. Rounds out that CD nicely, and > if you enjoy it I reccomend it as a purchase. I think there's also another Banco de Gaia track on "Northern Exposure 1" called "Heliopolis" from Banco's first CD "Maya" (but I could be wrong). Also worth tracking down is the 3CD version of "Last Train To Lhasa", but that is kinda rare these days. I haven't scored a copy yet :-( Banco de Gaia (or Toby Marks to his mum) isn't quite up there in the Orbital stakes in my book (some of the ethnic samples get layed on a bit too thickly for my tastes), but is still worth a listen. The last album has a track with sax solo however, so be warned - it is very Pink Floyd (and it just so happens that the sax player is none other than PF's sax player) > anyone know where I can pick up Union Jack's full CD "Armageddon"? I've > been hearing cool things about them.. Orbital-esque.. any one > heard anything about them/from them? Union Jack are more melodic trance than Orbital-esque. "Two Full Moons And A Trout" is a good track, but I found that the album "Armegeddon" was a bit too same-y. Not enough variety between the tracks. > Hmm.. I know there are 3 Northern Exposure CDs available in the US.. the > first one that he was talking about with Gaia and FSOL.. then there is > Northern Exposure 2, East and West coast edition. That might be > combined in > the UK as one CD. "Northern Exposure 2" was released here in Oz as a 2CD as well. Same with "Northern Exposure 1", which I haven't seen in a while actually. Initially came out as a double digipak, but now it's just the usual slimline 2CD jewel case. On Northern Exposure 2 - first CD: > Overall, it's good.. the last two tracks (Purple and Symphony) are > particularly mesmorizing. Hmmmm...I thought that this disc kinda lost it in the middle, but that last track (Hybrid - "Symphony") is quite excellent - anyone know more about this track or the person(s) behind it? However the second disc of "Northern Exposure 2" is a great mix - you get yer Speedy J & Sven Vath, etc. Although, the first track is listed as Cygnus X - "Orange Theme" - and it isn't the same as the copies of that track I have from various Eye-Q compilations...is it some unknown remix or did Sasha & Digweed list it incorrectly? On top 10 tracks: > System 7 "Alpha Wave" (Plastikman mix) this is an amazing mix - best thing Hawtin has ever done, IMHO. Hunt it down if you can - it's worth it. 19 mins of acid bliss. > What do you guys think of Salt Tank? The only Salt Tank I have is an EP called "Eugena" (or something like that). Basically a remix of a Tori Amos song ("Me and a Gun"). Not that impressive, but I'm sure they've done better stuff. I know its piano is repetitive, but I'm more of an "Oxbow Lakes" (Orb) kind of person. It sorta sounds like the melody of spoken word -- i.e. it sounds like someone talking. Granted it doesn't have much piano, but what it does have is *different* from what most people like to play.. I got a hold of the version of Lou Reed's Perfect Day that is sung line by line by different people, and even though it is very off topic I was wondering if anyone had a list of the different people who contributed to this song, hopefully in the order they sing. If not, can anyone let me know where I might be able to find this info? You are all a very resourceful sounding bunch, so I thought I would give it a shot. Back to Orbital now.... Thanks! Dan P.S. Maybe the Hartnoll brothers are in there somewhere as well? Or maybe there is a remix? nope, not going to make this on topic I dont think. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orbital" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orbital@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: trent242r@juno.com (trent 242 x) Subject: (orbital) top ten orbital songs Date: 16 May 1998 09:55:20 -0400 here's my top ten fave orbital songs: 1. Date: 16 May 1998 06:16:09 -0700 Hey guys- About all the top tens.. I don't think there's a way I could ever come up with one.. because when I love a song enough for it to make that list.. it's because of the emotion behind the song.. I've always loved songs that relate to the way I'm feeling at that time.. so some songs are fave songs for like a week, some for a month, some for years even. But it all has to do with emotions.. if I was to make a list when I'm way down there and compare it to a list made when I'm way up there.. they'd be totally different. So that is why you won't see a top ten from me. Who decided on ten anyway?? But some looonnnnggg lasting faves of mine: mayonaise-the smashing pumpkins 4am-our lady peace hurt-nine inch nails the girl with the sun in her head-orbital halcyon+on+on-orbital today-the smashing pumpkins They all really touched something in me at different times, and I found things in them I could really relate to. Yes....I know exactly what they are....I have done a lot of study on Copyright laws...especially in the "media" dept. Being that I am in broadcast journalism in school...and planning on majoring in communications in college...you kinda have to know what you can and can't reproduce.....and in the case of interviews what ever TV station they come from holds the copyright, in the case of music videos the company producing the video holds the copyright (but copyrights on music videos is a touchy matter because coompanies would kill to have stations such as Mtv air their videos...to promote etc....thats why they get complimentary copies), and in the case of stuff you've smuggled in/out of live concerts...no copyright exists.....I mean the videographer COULD claim copyright on them if they like..but then it belongs to them.. (as my respect for her jumps by leaps and bounds) It has quite a lot of FSOL on it, most or all from the ISDN album, I think. I have the HAL single, but I haven't purchased the compilation (since I already have most of what's on it). It looks like a pretty darn decent compilation, especially since you don't see many compilations of that style (at least not around here). # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Morey Gamble" Subject: Re: (orbital) A spiffy idea..... There is a little more to it than that. When a copyright has been registered for a song, the holder of that copyright owns the exclusive right to reproduce that song in any recorded format. They also have the exclusive rights to grant permission for other parties to reproduce the song for a royalty fee. Legally, after granting the rights to reproduce the song (or songs), the copyright holder is owed whatever the agreed upon royalty is for each copy that is manufactured. This is what's known as mechanical royalty. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Daniel Kasaj" Subject: (orbital) CDNow discount (again) Date: 18 May 1998 22:16:21 +0200 Hey all, I got a discount at CDNow (again+ACE-), but since i'm not planing on buying anything in the near future maybe someone can use this +ACQ-10.00 coupon... We were talking about playing the records on a turntable with a tempo control (such as a technics 1200) like a DJ uses, to adjust the speed the record plays at. Didn't your mother ever tell you to share? ** Oh, so now this is about my mother? ** Yes....I know exactly what they are....I have done a lot of study on Copyright laws...especially in the "media" dept. ** Aww.... you're in broadcast journalism at school? How sweet. Take the damn course and shove it UP YOUR ASS. I don't think the teacher's done a good job teaching you about copyright laws.. read this: United States Copyright Act: Chapter 11 - sound recordings and music videos: 1101. Unauthorized fixation and trafficking in sound recordings and music videos (a) Unauthorized Acts. - Anyone who, without the consent of the performer or performers involved - (1) fixes the sounds or sounds and images of a live musical performance in a copy or phonorecord, or reproduces copies or phonorecords of such a performance from an unauthorized fixation, (2) transmits or otherwise communicates to the public the sounds or sounds and images of a live musical performance, or (3) distributes or offers to distribute, sells or offers to sell, rents or offers to rent, or traffics in any copy or phonorecord fixed as described in paragraph (1), regardless of whether the fixations occurred in the United States, shall be subject to the remedies provided in sections 502 through 505, to the same extent as an infringer of copyright. (b) Definition. - As used in this section, the term "traffic in" means transport, transfer, or otherwise dispose of, to another, as consideration for anything of value, or make or obtain control of with intent to transport, transfer, or dispose of. (c) Applicability. - This section shall apply to any act or acts that occur on or after the date of the enactment of the Uruguay Round Agreements Act. (d) State Law Not Preempted. - Nothing in this section may be construed to annul or limit any rights or remedies under the common law or statutes of any State. Under sections 502-505, all copies that you have can be confiscated. That means no originals, no new copies. All gone. They may just be impounded for a while, but it's possible they'd all be destroyed. It also mentions the rather large fines you'd have to pay. Actually, all the people sending you shit would have to pay: they're involved too. Last time I checked, that meant you can't have live bootleg recordings. Unauthorized live recordings = bootlegs = illegal. ** Anyone liking further info on copyrigh tlaws can mail me if they like... ** Actually, maybe you should go to your local law library, or if you don't have access to one, ask a lawyer, or even look the acts up on the internet. Otherwise you won't exactly go far in.. what was it you wanted to do?? journalism?? ** I would be more than happy to work something out with each individual person.. ** And you have time to do this? Don't you have to be doing homework for precious journalism class or something? ** Not much considering I work for my school's TV station.. ** Do you *ever* put your ego in the 'off' position? ** Not everyone has the opportunity to see the same things that canadians do... ** You get amp every week. I only get to see ru receiving once a month. Mail in a fucking request if you want to see something. By the way, call your damn cable company, there's something called Much USA. As in, MuchMusic for you Americans. The programming's a bit different, but guess what?? Tribal gathering was aired on both MuchMusic and Much USA. Smile. ** I've already contacted 3 TV stations that my H.S. (High School) deals with and their archives person will be searching their tapes on Mondya to locate stuff on Orbital for me.....and I will soon be contacting Mtv....to see what they can help me with .... ** Aww.. here's the ego again. By the way, mtv will do jack shit for you.. somebody up here tried to get muchmusic to let them have a copy of the TG special.. much said that 'cuz of copyrights, the best they could do was to let the person go down and watch it. --- The opinionated bitch has spoken, you can all go home now.
