These guys have been making excellent electronic music for over 10 years, but continue to remain anonymous to many here in the US. While many associate their music with Techno Dance, many techno organizations group them in the 'Ambient' [i.e. Space] category due to vast range of their melodies and styles, which often include ambient electronis sound sampling. They are thus linked with the likes of Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream. Like the latter, Orbital has recently produced musical score for the movies "Event Horizon", "The Spawn", and "The Saint". While the quality of the movie production may vary, the contribution by Orbital remains a major asset of each. Besides these 'side' projects, Orbital has recently come off the Headline slot for the first half of last summer's Lollapalooza tour, introducing there music and intense multimedia stage production to a whole new generation of music fans. They impressed so many newcomers that I find it disappointing that Orbital were only a stand-in for the over-hyped Prodigy, which joined Lollapalooza half-way through the summer tour for all of the westcoast shows. In my humble opinion, the tour would have had a larger impact overall by keeping the soul and intellect of Orbital instead of opting for the jaded, glam-appeal of Prodigy. For everyone at hos who hasn't heard of or needs a refresher of Orbital, I highly recommend a website created by media students of the P.T.R.Lab at Georgia Tech's School of Language, Communication, and Culture. These students covered Orbital's '96 visit to Atlanta and produced one of the best websites I've ever seen! [even if you are not a fan]. In order to get the full impact of this site, your browser requires the FREE Macromadia shockwave plugin, which allow the play of the streaming audio from Orbital's Live show [./aural.html]. I run it thru Netscape on a MacPPC with only 16MBS of RAM. There is also a great interview of the brothers at [./oral. html]. The main URL entry point is: http://www.lcc.gatech.edu/ptrl/orbital/orbital.html OK< now to the point. I'd love to hear hos do a show featuring Orbital's 10+ years of contribution, much of which has got them labeled as 'Ambient' [ i.e. 'Space Music', as I understand the feel of the term]. I include a list of tracks from each of their 4 major releases which highlight more of Orbital's 'Spacey-Ambient' stuff and less of their 'beat-dance' stuff. These traks are really my favorites and the reason why I think that thes guys would provide an excellent program for you and all hos fans out there. I've listed the tracks in chronological order of the release of the albums. Album 1: [1991:nicknamed "Green"] Tracks: 1."Moebius" [a sample from Warf on StarTrek Next Generation] 2."Belfast" 3."Chime" Album 2: [1993:nicknamed "Brown"] 4."Lush 3-2" 5."Impact {The Earth is Burning}" 6."Walk Now" 7."Remind" 8."Halcyon + on + on" Album 3: [1994: "Snivilisation"] 9."Forever" 10."Sad But True" 11."Are We Here?" 12."Kein Trink Wasser" [piano tech] 13."Attached" [a better, more ethereal version is on a sampler called "United States of Ambience II" >Moonshine Music< which I'm told originated from John "Peel's Sessions" album of Orbital. Album 4: [1996: 2CD "Insides"] These tracks are the most soundtrack like and some of their longest peices also. 14."The Girl with the Sun In Her Head" [all time favorite of mine] 15."Adnans" [ethereal..] 16."Dwr Budr" [Welsh for 'dirty water',about an oil tanker spill off Wales] 17."Out There Somewhere" [just wonderful] Well this would give you at least an hour of music. You may actually have to do 2! shows on Orbital, especially if you were to listen to all 4 albums and get the other possibilities like the Steve Reich-esque track "Monday" of Orbital 2 'Brown'. All tracks including, EVERY ORBITAL RELEASE! from all singles can also be heard via Realaudio streaming from a real fan website run by a guy named Steve Price in England. His OrbitalSite called LOOPZ is at: http://wkweb1.cableinet.co.uk/BaDmUtHa/ >From here you can preview everything Orbital has ever done for yourself, and i'm sure you'll agree that the Hartnolls are gifted musicians whose art needs to be shared around the USA. especially among Space Hearts like us. Thanx for your time. Please feel free to ask any questions. Mine may not take the cake, but it's definitely up there. I went into San Francisco, to Union Square, with maybe 10-15 other people. I was the responsible, sober driver, who let all her friends drink themselves into oblivion. We all had gotten split up, there were over 7,000 people in a fairly small section of city blocks. Four of us were standing on a corner and to the right of us were people climbing traffic light poles, to the left were two guys standing on top of a bus stop shelter pleasuring themselves. M-80 explosives had been going off all night, and at one point, I heard another go off, and felt something sharp hit my cheek. I ducked down to get out of the way, and then I felt really dizzy and my head was throbbing. Next thing I know, blood is pouring down my face from the left side of my head, opposite where I got hit in the cheek. I scream, my friends get me to some police officers, who get me to an ambulance, who takes me to an incompetent hospital. I sat there for an hour, having only had water poured on my head wound. At about 1:30 (this all started at maybe 12:30 or so) my parents show up and take me to another hospital, where I have medical coverage, since nothing was being done at that point. I waited another few hours, went to an operating room, had 5 stitches put in my head and 2 on my cheek. I was fine and calm during the whole thing, except when I saw the razor. The doctor had to shave a small patch of hair, around the wound. It takes a long time to grow 3 1/2 feet of hair, I cried like a baby when he shaved it. I had a cat-scan to make sure my brains were in place and I got home at about 7:30 the next morning.......next New Year's definitely can't be any worse than that. Just thought I'd share my horror story with all of you, since we are all in a sharing mood. ~Kim - - # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orbital" in the message. # Postings must go to orbital@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 23:23:20 -0600 From: Sean Granger Subject: Re: (orbital) Families / SkyHigh lineup Aimee Couture wrote: > > ** > hehe don't take that family time for granted... yur gonna miss it >:) > ** > > Uhm.. nah. My best friend and I drove from Mass. to my girlfriends housein N.Y. We stayed there the night of the 30th then went into NYC with one of my girfriedn's friends for the day on the 31st. We ended up getting served at a restaurant...which was cool. We went to times sqaure and hung around for about 4 hours untilk the ball dropped. It was freezing but we had a great spot. Good view of the screen and the ball and right by the TV cameras. John Leguizamo (I think it was NBC's setup) was like 20 feet from us. It was colder than a witch's titty in a brass bra but it was worth doing. My friend got pretty hammered and so we had to drag him home. Hello all. I've been on the list for a short while now (even though I subscribed over a year ago, I finally realized I had to send that confirmation thingy back.) I've been listening to Orbital for about 4.5 years now, ever since I heard a piece of Are we Here? in school. Probably the only useful thing I came across there. Getting back to the question above I haven't seen too many orbital mp3's on the net at all. I own all 5 cd's I could get a hold of here in New Jersey but wanted to have mp3's of all the good songs at work. What I was wondering now though is if there is anyway an mp3 FTP could be set up of the different songs that didn't come on the US versions of the albums, or singles that aren't available. Of course this should all be approved by Paul and Phil. I'm not sure if they monitor this list like the way Underworld pops up on the dirtylist at all, but I'm sure someone would be able to contact them. Ravage ravage@earthling.net ...You can download my 10 MB .sig file once my FTP is back up. - - # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orbital" in the message. # Postings must go to orbital@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 09:03:43 -0500 From: "matt" Subject: (orbital) more random thoughts to keep y'all warm i sent a first volume to one of these lists, but i'm sending you all the new version 1)i think that titanic is just as horrible and overrated as the english patient and that both will be looked back on as mistakes 2)i believe that people who flame those who have not insulted others should taken and spanked(unless they like that whereupon, they get beaten, unless they like that where they should be shot) 3)i think thatvanilla ice controls the spice girls as an attempt to get back at us all(did you know alanis morrisette once opened for him back in 90 or 91) 4) i think fiona apple is part of vh1 and adult contemporary's way of saying" now you will suffer" matt - - # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Email majordomo@xmission.com with "info orbital" in the message. # Postings must go to orbital@xmission.com -- replies go to original sender. # Orbital discography: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orbital ------------------------------ End of orbital-digest V2 #31 ****************************
