Agee" Subject: (orbital) Music recommendations With a deluge of Christmas and birthday money I went on a shopping spree for music CDs. I'll talk about the ones that I generally liked: - -Autechre's "Incunabla", an older (1994) effort which is an absolute MUST-BUY. By far their most conventional music that I've heard....yet still has the Autechre sound. Some of the songs are even hum-able. I can't believe I passed up buying this earlier. - -David Arnold's "Shaken & Stirred:The James Bond Project" : If you're a John Barry fan this is a great CD. LTJ Bukem has a track which really has nothing to do with James Bond but if you're one of those Bukem fans who have been waiting for new material since his excellent "Logical Progressions"...here you are. The rest of the tracks treat Barry's work with care and love....David Arnold obviously looks up to him. - -Photek's "Modus Operandi" has been mentioned quite a bit here.....it's very good minimalistic drum and bass....much better than that Ni Ten Ichi Riku (or whatever...you know what I'm talking about) song that he put out last year. - -Meat Beat Manifesto's "Original Fire", a compilation of some older MBM stuff that came out 4 or so years ago. The first two tracks are nearly worth the purchase of this E.P. alone. I also made the big mistake of buying an Underworld CD....the 2nd Toughest of the Infants album. Juanita and Pearl's Girl (who I'm certain everybody and their dogs have heard) are so infinitely superior to every other track on this CD. Avoid. I'm still waiting for a new Uberzone album, by the way. Guess I'll have to wait forever. P.S.---The "new" Plastikman single is lousy. I liked your other recommendations but on this one i must disagree. While those are probably the best 2 songs on the cd, all the other songs are pretty good as well. I'm currently hooked on Stagger, the last track. I think you just need to be in a certain mood to listen to most of the stuff. I doubt if you were listening to Speed Freak and then switched over to it you would leave it on for long, but it would flow pretty well from something like Belfast or Halcyon. On a more general note two things are kinda bothering me. The other night on Amp I saw the Chemical Bros. video for Electrobank. Where the hell did that idea come from? Now I didn't see the whole thing but is the entire video just that gymnast running around sort of to the music? It just seems like they could have done something better with a song like that. Also I was watching Mtv today and they pop on saying there gonna play the 12 angry viewers video of the week, and it's Daft Punk's Around the World. Now I like the song and the video, but c'mon it's been around for month's and there just gonna put it into heavy rotation now? Mtv just pisses me off sometimes. Next thing you know the Week in Rock is gonna be the Interactive Space-Age Week of Electronica on the Information Superhighway. ISAWEIS instead of WIR? And worst of all the video for Around the World isn't closed-captioned! I really wanted to learn the words to that song. First I wrote of my idea to make a digital copy of a videotape in form of a MPEG movie... the damn idea crashed when I hooked up my VCR with the TV tuner card and saw how shitty the picture was. What I did is record the AUDIO only portion of the tape and encoded it into MP3 format. It is a 44KHz 16-bit mono recording, but of a good quality. During my last posts there were a few mistakes: 1. The live set featured also Kein Trink Wasser which I neglected to mention (dunno why, it's a really good take of it) 2. The show lasted 50 minutes and not 30 as I said before. This was a really lame typo. A lot of people have been mailing me personally (sorry for not replying to each and every one of you) asking me if I was going to make a disc out of it and sell it like Loopz sold the Oscillate CD... and the answer is NOPE. Even if I did manage to make the movie I wouldn't sell it but distribute it freely on the Web. This might still be the option if I can do the capture over at my friend's house who has a professional capturing card and a real high quality VCR (mine's 10 yrs old). But for now, I have only the audio portion of the show, a 24 Mb mpeg layer 3 file. I've been listening to it over and over, and love it. I am now in process of negotiating with two web space providers and as soon as I find a home for my homepage, the 24 mb file will be up for you lot to download. There will also be a 7 Mb MPEG movie of a mini-interview (a real MINI interview, it's less than a minute long) with Phil and Paul that was on E! Entertainment Tonight show. That one I captured from TV and is in extra high quality. While I still love In Sides and I appreciate the great joy it gave me back in 1996 I've found that my tastes have changed quite a bit. Orbital "got me into" techno, but In Sides really sounds too "film-scorey" now. I really, really hope that Paul and Phil can deliver more cutting-edge, HUNGRY music like they did earlier in their career. These days I really long for electro and other analog sounds....orbital is just a bit too lush as of late for my tastes. But the brothers are innovators and usually keep from being stale....I expect nothing less of them. Anyway, me and my mates lit the candles and began playing cards and drinking, but someone had the inspired suggestion of getting Marks' CD Discman and hooking it up to my battery speakers. For the seminal listening experience we decided to get all our live albums and pretend we were at a gig... yeah, I know, but the gin was starting to take effect. After listening to Faith No More, Led Zep and some Verve bootlegs I started playing my "Orbital Live" CD-R compiled from various sources, and a sudden realization struck me... aren't Orbital the quietest boys on-stage you've ever heard? Not in the musical sense, of course, but when a sequence of songs comes to a close you never hear a peep out of them. 'Course, compared to the likes of Mike 'Mouthy Git' Patton this might seem obvious, but I worked out that the ONLY thing I've ever heard from them at a concert was when Paul said something like 'See you all next year' at a gig in the Manchester Academy in 1995. Anyone got a definitive list of on-stage quotes, jokes or exclamations? Thought not.... They are, in my opinion the BEST techno act around (and the first true LIVE techno act!!!). If anyone here does like them or have heard their new album 'Science of the Gods' could you tell me what you think?? IMO I think it is a bit too drum & bassy (a bit like Groverider)?? Anyway this is the first EVER message I have sent to this list. Could someone please reply?
