Date: 01 Feb 2000 14:31:07 -0400 Hi guys! I'm looking to see if there are any specifics yet regarding dates for Sting to play in Canada this year. There is a long story behind all of this, but I have to request vacation time right now for June, July or August. So, having an idea of when Sting is likely to play Toronto would be extremely valuable information to have. (I live on the east coast, where Sting has never played, so I'm attempting to plan ahead and finally get to see him play live) Any information you guys might be able to share would be greatly appreciated. It seems the reason he trademarked or copyrighted (or whatever he did to the name) was to keep other wrestlers from using it. Apparently there was this whole scheme about a "Fake Sting" in wrestling. Date: 04 Feb 2000 08:18:54 -0800 Anyone remember the SNL skit that came from? I loved those... anyway... Our man was in the news this morning. In slim little section that passes for the entertainment portion of our local newspaper was an article borrowed from the Orange County Register newspaper about singers who have become actors - who's bad and who's good. Where do you think Sting was listed? Unfortunately, under BAD. Here's what the writer had to say... *Sting - Like the punk rocker he used to me, Sting was all about loud and confrontational. Sneering and half-naked, he nearly overwhelmed Dune - incredible, considering the cast of thousands and giant sand worms. As his music has mellowed, so has his acting; he recently did a turn as a soft spoken bartender in the British indie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.* The writer was MUCH nicer about Sting than he was about Phil Collins, Madonna and Prince. I just want to know what's wrong with *sneering and half-naked*!? Maggie - To unsubscribe to police, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe police" in the body of the message. I often search for rare music (and most often fail in my attempts), but I do accumulate a fair amount of decent information along the way. Here's some that you might already know but, if not, you may find interesting.... Stewart's first band situation was in Beirut as a kid. The Nomads. We've all heard about how Stewart lost his virginity the first night he ever performed. Here's some lesser known Nomads info: 1) The Nomads began around '63 without Stewart. It was Ahmed Mamlouk on drums. 'Blondie', as Ahmed was called, had to leave the band and Stewart learned how to play to replace Ahmed, after Ian made an attempt. Stewart really got into it around '66 or '67. 2) The band was then comprised of: Stewart Copeland- drums Pete Carniff- guitar Pete Whybro- bass guitar Chris Khai- vocals 3) The band did ALL covers. They were influenced by a recent visit by the Beatles through Lebanon, so they played mostly Beatles and Rolling Stones covers. 4) They played cover songs... during their sets, that is... but Stewart would continue playing drums during intermissions. His own mini improv solo act! 5) The Nomads were one of 2 fairly popular bands in Beirut at the time; they were booked at the same clubs. You would think they would have been competitive as a result. Not so. The Ventures and The Nomads often "borrowed" performers from each other when somebody couldn't make it. I don't know for sure if Stewart played for the Ventures, but it is likely that he did play with a Nomads lineup which departed from the list above. 6) My notes are sketchy here but I have down that The Nomads were on TV more than once before Stewart was with them and they also recorded 2 cassettes for fun with amateur equipment before Stewart. After Stewart joined, I do not know if they were ever recorded. No recordings with Stewart or photos of the band with Stewart were recoverable by me and they are not thought to exist. Hope you liked that. I got the info via an interview with a reliable source. That doesn't mean there are inaccuracies, though. It's been a while since all this went down. Have fun, Jay . __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! For you non-drummers I'm sure you failed to realize the BND concert had no ebb and flow. Because just like a clock it does'nt change at all, when you are locked to an idiotic sequence. The Jeanie is out of the bottle Computer Sequenceing blows for live music!!! I can see using it to create music, but running the sequence live? Defeats the purpose of a drummer. Why even have one? Just run the Fricken drum machine. HOW BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I can see most non-drummers not even noticing a difference, thats the sad state about music these days. Less and less music is done for the love of music, and more for the almighty dollar! There's always the next tour for me! If you love the BND Tour I don't have a problem with that, but I thought you should know how it sounds from a drummers perspective. He was the former drummer for Blue Oyster Cult and if you listen to rock drumming you should realize he was a very talented drummer. My own opinion, and since I play the drums I feel I have some credibility on these subject, they are all technical virtuosos. It cracks me up how we criticize someones ability that none of us will ever achieve. The trick to drumming is what you here, but what you see and here. If someone were to listen to some of Stewarts stuff, they could probably feel that it was simple to play, until they tried to emulate his sound and watched him play the songs. I've also read where Sting has said less is more. Maybe Sting is asking Manu to do less with the songs because he feels it sounds better. I read where Sting said that Andy had put some very extraordinary stuff in EBYT, but in the end they decided to prune the song a bit and leave in only the bare essentials. Just a thought. First for all the critics toward Manu, yea he probably is playing more generic then Vinnie or Omar, but more then likely to Sting's asking, since quite frankly, it is HIS band. And once again, I have to say that his playing of the gospal finale in the FILL HER UP in concert simply blew my mind just like on the cd (btw is that 7/8 time?) Personally, I've always admired Manu not so much for his drumming but for his other percussion instrument playing, like in the Nothing Like The Sun songs (STRAIGHT TO MY HEART for example) and also in all of the Peter Gabriel songs. Second, drummers DO add their own style to the song, just like Stewart did in the live versions of MESSEGE IN A BOTTLE (his drumming is the main reason I think the live version is a whole other song). Also for any WHO fans on the list, if one listens to any of the demos Pete Townsend would have of the songs, then listen to the final versions, you will see a world of difference in the drumming between Townsend's demos and Keith Moon's! (Another extraordinary drummer if U ask me). I did want to ask one question, I have been reading many people's favorite drummers that weren't on the list, and while this person is on the list, I'm still surprised nevertheless why in the world no one has praised the brilliance of Neil Peart!!!! Just my opinion, while I'm not a drummer, one of my best friends is and we both were in marching band back in high school. So I do know musicality fairly well. Everybody seems really protective of drummers for some reason (would we feel so passionate about other instrumentalists I wonder?). I seem to remember a similar debate raging when I first joined the list late last year regarding the Vinnie/Manu swap. In response to Martin Vauchel's words about rock drummers getting all the high placings - don't forget that the results of this poll were due to the votes cast by the magazine's readership. It was a British poll too - I'm certain that an American one would have produced some significant differences. It mostly boils down to who is flavour of the moment and also those great players who are firmly embedded in people's consciousness. Rock music is also far more widespread than say, jazz or swing, so the rock guys have already got a head-start over everyone else. Since so many people have responded to this, I will slave over a hot keyboard and include the full poll result here (oh, and sorry, it wasn't "top 100" it was "the 50 drummers of the millennium").
