I often search for rare music (and most often fail in my attempts), but I do accumulate a fair amount of decent information along the way. Here's some that you might already know but, if not, you may find interesting.... Stewart's first band situation was in Beirut as a kid. The Nomads. We've all heard about how Stewart lost his virginity the first night he ever performed. Here's some lesser known Nomads info: 1) The Nomads began around '63 without Stewart. It was Ahmed Mamlouk on drums. 'Blondie', as Ahmed was called, had to leave the band and Stewart learned how to play to replace Ahmed, after Ian made an attempt. Stewart really got into it around '66 or '67. 2) The band was then comprised of: Stewart Copeland- drums Pete Carniff- guitar Pete Whybro- bass guitar Chris Khai- vocals 3) The band did ALL covers. They were influenced by a recent visit by the Beatles through Lebanon, so they played mostly Beatles and Rolling Stones covers. 4) They played cover songs... during their sets, that is... but Stewart would continue playing drums during intermissions. His own mini improv solo act! 5) The Nomads were one of 2 fairly popular bands in Beirut at the time; they were booked at the same clubs. You would think they would have been competitive as a result. Not so. The Ventures and The Nomads often "borrowed" performers from each other when somebody couldn't make it. I don't know for sure if Stewart played for the Ventures, but it is likely that he did play with a Nomads lineup which departed from the list above. 6) My notes are sketchy here but I have down that The Nomads were on TV more than once before Stewart was with them and they also recorded 2 cassettes for fun with amateur equipment before Stewart. After Stewart joined, I do not know if they were ever recorded. No recordings with Stewart or photos of the band with Stewart were recoverable by me and they are not thought to exist. Hope you liked that. I got the info via an interview with a reliable source. That doesn't mean there are inaccuracies, though. It's been a while since all this went down. He was the former drummer for Blue Oyster Cult and if you listen to rock drumming you should realize he was a very talented drummer. My own opinion, and since I play the drums I feel I have some credibility on these subject, they are all technical virtuosos. It cracks me up how we criticize someones ability that none of us will ever achieve. The trick to drumming is what you here, but what you see and here. If someone were to listen to some of Stewarts stuff, they could probably feel that it was simple to play, until they tried to emulate his sound and watched him play the songs. I've also read where Sting has said less is more. Maybe Sting is asking Manu to do less with the songs because he feels it sounds better. I read where Sting said that Andy had put some very extraordinary stuff in EBYT, but in the end they decided to prune the song a bit and leave in only the bare essentials. Just a thought. First for all the critics toward Manu, yea he probably is playing more generic then Vinnie or Omar, but more then likely to Sting's asking, since quite frankly, it is HIS band. And once again, I have to say that his playing of the gospal finale in the FILL HER UP in concert simply blew my mind just like on the cd (btw is that 7/8 time?) Personally, I've always admired Manu not so much for his drumming but for his other percussion instrument playing, like in the Nothing Like The Sun songs (STRAIGHT TO MY HEART for example) and also in all of the Peter Gabriel songs. Second, drummers DO add their own style to the song, just like Stewart did in the live versions of MESSEGE IN A BOTTLE (his drumming is the main reason I think the live version is a whole other song). Also for any WHO fans on the list, if one listens to any of the demos Pete Townsend would have of the songs, then listen to the final versions, you will see a world of difference in the drumming between Townsend's demos and Keith Moon's! (Another extraordinary drummer if U ask me). I did want to ask one question, I have been reading many people's favorite drummers that weren't on the list, and while this person is on the list, I'm still surprised nevertheless why in the world no one has praised the brilliance of Neil Peart!!!! Any song or album by any artist may be loved or = hated. But=20 consider these two points:

I think we all agree that Sting wouldn't make a new = album=20 without believing in it.
Desert Rose is considered a wonderful song and BND = a=20 wonderful album by thousands of people (I am one of = them).

Wouldn't this be enough to prevent people from = saying that=20 Sting was honouring a contract when he released the album, whatever they = think=20 of it?

I heard Madonna persuaded Sting to remix the album after she heard it and Sting did! I think that may have been a mistake. I would love to hear the original material before he remixed it. The most notable thing to me as we have all discussed over and over again is the drums. I still think the songs on BND have merit, I'm just not thrilled with the presentation. The way I'm sure he has slipped is that alot of my friends who are'nt huge Sting fans have lost interest in his music and his overpriced ticket prices. A telephone-call to the Galaxie on the afternoon brought me the good news: The concert will be in Metz as scheduled. So I got into my car and drove to Metz. After being in such big venues like Cologne (K�lnarena), Oberhausen (Arena) or Mannheim (Maimarkthalle) it was a pleasure to be in the Galaxie - a nice, not so big music hall. The concert began very on time at 20.30 - as stated on the ticket (not with the delay of over an half hour to 20.00 in germany). Sting seemed to be recovered very well from his flu. After ATY he dropped off his jacket of course, shaked his body and rubbed his arms as feeling cold - but he played warm himself on this evening. When he introduced the band, Manu Katche and Jason Rebello got the most applause from the audience (remember: I'm in France here). After introducing Manu he said something into the shouting and whistling like "Vive la France" (I could be wrong - I don't speak French) and Jason he introduced as the "enfant terrible" of his band. And after that he introduced himself: "Je'm appel Sting", what made himself and the audience laughing. But he was in a very good mood and his voice was in a very good shape this evening. Englishman In New York - after his little solo on the end of the song Jason Rebello came in front of his keyboard and made a little dance like a belly dance. In between he stroked Sting's cheek, what made Sting laughing. He laughed so much that he couldn't sing along, so he asked the audience to sing for him, what the people did. After the song Jason got an extra handshake of him. Was that the first time this episode took place - I don't remember to have seen this a time before (... there are so many things in the show seeming spontaneous but beeing very exactly learned and planned, like the throw of the mute from Chris to Kipper)??? Roxanne - and a sign of Alzheimer once more. From the first note of Roxanne I thought: this one you haven't heard yet in this way!!! Domininc began very faint (most of the audience didn't recognized the song until Sting began singing). And somewhere in the song Sting started a famous and quick bass-playing he hold on up to the end of the song (I thougt he have to get a cramp in his fingers). This bass-line seemed to animate him to some vocal experimentations (the usual Roxann-O's and E-Yeah-Oh's in alternation with the audience were very reduced). Wow, this was a very great version that took me very enthusiastic - a version of this song that have to be on a live-recording like "Bring on the Night" (you know - many list-members want Sting to come back to this roots...). Dear God! Give me a tape of this show only because of this song - and give me some tapes of the shows before to deserve me from the fear I haven't heard that great version of this song before!!! Bring On The Night / When The World Is Running Down... - also on this song I had the impression it placed particular emphasis on Sting's bassplaying. Jason's solo was IMO okay but not very spectacular. Dominic seemed to be drowned out a little bit - technical problems on some songs, forgotten by the lights (only enlighted on his solos)... It was a very funny night. I whish I would be in Genf now - not sitting here writing this lines. When I heard Sting was to speak at the Union, I was beside myself. All speakers do a Q&A session at the end. It's all very personal! I busted my ass to score tickets, they're free of course. But I ended up shelling out some cash anyway. So I got all stoked and had my question ready to go (a question I had been waiting to ask the man for nine years). I coulnd't have been more excited! I showed up six hours early to get in the front row. I was the first to see the sign put up on the wall that I will never forget... Sting had to cancel the Union speach to host Saturday Night Live in NY. I think he ended up hosting not just performing, but of course I didn't even get to see it living in bloody England at the time. So that was my double dose of heart-break. In short, no Sting has not spoke at the Oxford Union yet, but he owes us one! Aloha, -J- Perhaps someone from the UK can best answer this question. When I heard Sting was to speak at the Union, I was beside myself. All speakers do a Q&A session at the end. It's all very personal! I busted my ass to score tickets, they're free of course. But I ended up shelling out some cash anyway. So I got all stoked and had my question ready to go (a question I had been waiting to ask the man for nine years). I coulnd't have been more excited! I showed up six hours early to get in the front row. I was the first to see the sign put up on the wall that I will never forget... Sting had to cancel the Union speach to host Saturday Night Live in NY. I think he ended up hosting not just performing, but of course I didn't even get to see it living in bloody England at the time. So that was my double dose of heart-break.
