I have been on this list for a while and have never written until now. I just wanted to put my two cents worth in on the topic of Buffy's ratings in the U.S. I work at a television station in San Antonio, TX myself. ( it's a CBS affiliate ) Working at a television station you get to see your local Nielsen ratings from the previous day by 8 a.m. the next morning. Buffy does pretty good here in San Antonio. She comes in fourth behind the "big three" networks, ABC, NBC, & CBS, and most of the time she beats out FOX. Also working in TV I also subscribe to a magazine that lists national ratings. Nationally, Buffy comes in fifth behind the "big four" networks, but week by week the show's ratings are getting better. For anyone who understands how the Nielsen ratings works, the show started the season getting a 4.0 rating and last weeks show pulled down a 4.7, which is a pretty good increase thus far this season considering last year the average rating for the show was a 3.5. The big question is why did Sarah leave before the movie started. 7pm and people start showing up. 7:20 and Sean Patrick Flannery shows up. I guess I missed but somewhere Alyson Hannigan snuck in but I managed to get autograph after the movie when everyone grouped aruond her. She looked very casual until you saw the red hair. About 7:30 and Sarah shows up and stops to pose for the photogrophers and interviewers. I got a few pictures but I doubt they will come out good because of where I was. When I got near the door security told me to put it away so that killed that plan and we went in the theater. 7:45 and Sarah walks in , about 10 seats and 3 rows away, or about 13 feet, she stops and sees someone she knows. She goes to the middle rows of the reserved section and the lights go down, and come on about 3 times before she grabs the guy shes with by the hand and leaves. Now does anyone here have any "sources" close to Sarah that might know why she left her own movie premier? Hey list editors, do you have any connections that may know? Was she nervous? Did she see something she didn't like? The theater wasn't packed, about half full. Or did someone, a heckler, maybe say something Sarah didn't like? Who knows, but thats my Hollywood experience. Thanks to O'Reilly's magical intervention, Amanda gains the ability to prepare wonderfully delicious meals that attract many new patrons to her restaurant. More important, as in ``Like Water for Chocolate,'' she is able to spice her food with her most heartfelt -- and highly contagious -- emotions. Shortly after she casts an approving eye on Tom Bartlett (Sean Patrick Flanery), a hunky department store executive, the latter savors Amanda's Crab Napoleon, and develops an instant craving for the chef. Even when magic is involved, however, a romantic comedy has to place a few obstacles in the path of true love. Tom, a commitment-shy workaholic, is reluctant to remain under Amanda's spell, especially when he discovers that he has, quite literally, been bewitched. But he comes to rely on her expertise while overseeing the grand opening of a tony restaurant in the upscale store Henri Bendel. Fresh from his attention-grabbing turn as a sad-eyed pedophile in Todd Solondz's ``Happiness,'' Dylan Baker co-stars as Jonathan Bendel, Tom's stuffy boss. When a snooty chef resigns just before the restaurant opening, Bendel is the one who's most insistent that Amanda assume control of the kitchen. But, then again, Bendel's judgment is more than a little clouded: After sampling one of Amanda's scrumptious desserts, he's swept into a passionate romance with Lois (Patricia Clarkson of ``High Art''), Tom's wisecracking secretary. Working from a strenuously whimsical script by Judith Roberts, first-time feature director (and vet producer) Mark Tarlov misses the mark while aiming for the light, bright tone of classic Hollywood romantic comedies. The pace is brisk -- perhaps a tad too brisk -- and the production values are suitably spiffy. But there is a heavy air of literal-mindedness throughout the pic, even during a fantasy ballroom-dance sequence. It's not enough for Tarlov to hint that spirits are soaring and love is on the wing. Just to make sure no one misses the point, he has Amanda and Tom levitate when they share a heated embrace. Despite game efforts, leads Gellar and Flanery fail to generate anything more potent than low-wattage star power. As a result, their thinly written characters fail to dazzle in sufficiently delightful fashion, and their romance is about as compelling as a plot contrivance on a routine sitcom. It helps little that both actors are repeatedly upstaged by supporting players. (Larry Gilliard Jr. is a standout as Amanda's assistant.) For further info: http://www.sarah-michelle-gellar.com/list.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Brett John Subject: (smg-fans) Buffy, season three overall *SPOILERS* Date: 14 Feb 1999 21:26:12 -0700 Anne-Bad Girls SPOILERS BELOW..... if you don't want to know about anything that happened in season 3 of Buffy, stop now. some of it might be below. okay, i've been kind of wondering about something. after reflecting on the recent couple of eps, then the season as a whole, does anyone else feel like the show is shifting to something else? i'll try to explain... during seasons 1 and 2, feelings were brought up inside me that never happened during anything else i've watched. i am never affected by movies or tv, they suck me in and hold my attention, but leave no lasting impressions other than enjoyment of my time (except for seeing Scream 2 the second time. i went into the bathroom by myself after the movie and i just had to look under the stalls to make sure no one was in there with me...). i have a great imagination, and allow things to pull me in and they entertain me better this way. but seasons 1 and 2 were able to make me feel for the characters. the eps moved me and inspired me in ways that nothing else had before. and that's what hooked me on this show. it was excellently written and done and Joss's vision was superbly brought to the small screen. and this continued during the start of season 3. i've been trying to sort out when things started to change, and i think they did subtly almost half of the season now. it's been small things here or there, that makes the show feel as if it's transforming away from its norm. it's hard to explain... like from Angel's return until Bad Girls, it seems as if the whole relationship between Angel and Buffy is being drug out and being played into more of a major drama, like Dawson's Creek. we especially see this in points like where they are talking and Xander walks in on them in The Zeppo. except in Amends, in which Joos himself turns this relationship into an important part of the ep and of the series, and we feel it move us and feel for the characters. for the most part, it just seems like the shows seems to be slipping from its motif of all-genre style show to a more drama and suspense show. i don't know if anybody understands what i'm saying here, but it just feels like the whole style of the show is different now than it was during the first two seasons. and i'm not decided on whether i like it or not. i guess what we could use right about now is a 'Directed and Written by Joss Whedon' to be on the front of an upcoming ep, just to reinstate my faith in the show. not that my faith is dwendelling, just that its starting to sway a little. last season we had a couple of eps by Joss, all of which were the best of the season, as i'm sure all of us know. but so far this season there have been just one or two and they alone, except for Helpless, have seemed to continue the great legacy of the show. the rest have seemed to stray here and there and it kinda pulls the show off its game a little. its game is in Cornavaka (sp?). but i think that Joss will prove me wrong. i hope so... SPOILERS BELOW. okay, as for Consequences. first, i must apologize to Marti Noxon for my comments on season three and the direction it's taking. because she qualmed all my fears last night with this ep. i saw those wonderful themes that drew me to this show, i saw a great plot, and i was on the edge of my seat for parts of the hour. this ep resembled the Buffy of old, definitely a job well done. and now, down to the specifics. first, i think that this is an interestingly good plot twist on Faith. it's been a great deal of character building to get her to this point, only to turn her bad. this will definitely prove to be difficult for the gang. and it was nice to see them finally find out about the Mayor. and then only to lose Faith to him. it'll be one heck of a ride from here, i can tell already. although i don't think that Mr. Trick should have bit the dust (pun intended), because he was an interesting character and should have been used better.and Faith choking Xander? yikes! i thought we were gonna' lose him right there, especially with how long that scene was drug out. but Angel made the save, and with a bat no less! about Wesley. this guy has got to go. he's just a burden on the gang, and i don't see him lasting too much longer. he'll either be killed or sent back to to StuffyLand, so far as i can tell. and if anybody should be used as bait..... next up, i get my wish!! for Buffy's 50th episode, we'll have another ep from the man himself, Joss Whedon. after this ep, and Joss's that's up next, i'd say it'll make up for all the weirdness that has been this season. man, i can't wait!! what did you think? Finally the show is coming out of its slump. Consequences was a great episode. I was waiting at every commercial for more. Congrats to the writers for the famous and great idea about the evil twin. I hope from now on they keep it this way, One good Slayer (happy and blonde), and one Evil Slayer (dark and sinister). I think Faith and Buffy are perfect together, and against each other. Both the same but completely different. This story line has worked many times before and I am so glad that they are deciding to do this. For one thing, I didn't like Faith in the "scooby-doo gang" anyway. And I can't believe that they killed Mr. Trick, I thought he was a cool villian. But then again, the Invinsible mayor and Evil Slayer are a great follow up. I like the evil twin of Willow, too. I think next week's ep. will be all about the good and evil twins. By the way, I feel really bad for Willow, I know what she's going through, it happened to me once a long time ago. I know she'll be over it. I felt really sad when Willow was talking to Buffy and mad her cry. Now is that great acting by Sarah or what! Every week, fans can watch her kick butt on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. But in a one-month span, moviegoers will witness the actress try her hand at romantic comedy and dramatic, campy bitchiness. Your senses are heightened when you're in love. Everything smells better. Fresh cut grass smells as if you've never smelled it before. Your senses of taste, touch and hearing are amplified. Also shot in Manhattan, Gellar's hometown, INTENTIONS finds the actress in viper mode, spewing forth with vicious, sexually charged dialogue and swearing like a truck driver. So, is it really more fun to play the bad girl? "Oh, there's no question," she says instantly. "It's great to play the bad girl. But you have to love every role you do. I loved playing Kathryn. It was such fun to be that wicked and sexy and bitter and cynical. It was fun to manipulate everyone." And how about that salty language? Did the words tumble easily out of Gellar's mouth? "That was the first thing [director-writer] Roger Kumble ever said to me," remembers Gellar, who dyed her hair dark for her role. "When I sat down to meet with him, he said, `So, can Buffy say these things?' My response was `Fuck, yeah!'" And now onto BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, in its third and, arguably, finest season yet on the red-hot weblet, the WB. Gellar, of course, stars as the Chosen One, a slayer trying pull off the bloody complicated task of saving the world and leading the semblance of a normal existence as a teenager in high school, one dealing with peer pressure, sexual awakening and the college application process. The current season picked up where last year's finale, "Becoming, Parts I & II," left off. Buffy has returned to Sunnydale. The love of her life, Angel (David Boreanaz), is back on terra firma. The seemingly burgeoning relationship between Giles and her mother (Kristine Sutherland) will probably go nowhere. Characters seen infrequently thus far this season may pop up. As for that bombshell: "I can tell you that we've got a couple of episodes will be all about Faith teaching Buffy about being a Slayer and vice-versa," the actress reveals. "We're getting into some really heavy material. Our big episode, `Bad Girls,' is incredible. Something happens in it that will change the course of Buffy's life for-EVER. And Faith's life, too." What viewers will not see, however, is Gellar herself altering Buffy in any significant way. If the character changes, it's the doing of series creator Joss Whedon. He runs the show and he's the master of Buffy's domain. The lead characters on many series begin as the creations of the writers, then, as the series evolves and as the stars' clout increases, the characters become the intellectual property of the actors. "That's not happening on BUFFY," Gellar says forcefully. "That's the beauty of the show. Joss is there, first of all, every single day. He has not disappeared. He has not abandoned us for anything. The characters are still Joss's creations. Joss will sometimes say to me, `Sarah, this is Buffy. It's not Sarah.' "And it's not. Buffy and all of the characters are still HIS characters. Sarah Michelle Gellar is a triple threat. Every week, fans can watch her kick butt on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. But in a one-month span, moviegoers will witness the actress try her hand at romantic comedy and dramatic, campy bitchiness. Out now is SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE, which casts her as the down-on-her-luck owner and chef at a tiny, languishing restaurant who meets a commitment-shy restaurant entrepreneur (Sean Patrick Flanery) with whom she falls head over heels in love. From there it's all magic, floating kisses, orgasmic food and ballroom dancing. March 12 brings with it CRUEL INTENTIONS, an updated DANGEROUS LIAISONS with Gellar as the acidic Manhattan rich bitch who, just for the sport of it, teams with her studly step-brother (Ryan Phillippe) to corrupt an innocent virgin (Reese Witherspoon).=20 Oh yeah, and there's Gellar's quickie cafeteria cameo in SHE'S ALL THAT, which opened in the number one slot at the box office in late January.=20 "People are just going to be INUNDATED with me," says the energetic Gellar, whose other credits include the films I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and FUNNY FARM, as well as a long, Emmy Award-winning stint on the soap opera ALL MY CHILDREN, in which she played Susan Lucci's daughter. "If I mess this up I'm in a lot of trouble, huh? Some of the studio people were nervous about having the movies come out so close, but for me it really is a blessing. It's very exciting to finally be able to show people the range that I think I'm capable of. The performances in the films are so different from each other, and they're so different from BUFFY."=20 Gellar felt a bit like Audrey Hepburn in BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S while shooting IRRESISTIBLE, as the film lensed in New York City, outdoors in assorted photogenic areas and inside the ritzy Bendel's department store. Chances are, however, that IRRESISTIBLE won't go down in history as a classic like TIFFANY'S. Hopeless romantics might adore the film, but cynics will likely hate it. "I agree, but even cynics need a little dose of fantasy. I like the aspect of the magic of love. Are we REALLY floating, Sean and I, or does it just feel like we're floating? Your senses are heightened when you're in love. Everything smells better. =46resh cut grass smells as if you've never smelled it before. Your senses of taste, touch and hearing are amplified. I really think everybody has experienced that, cynic or not."=20 Also shot in Manhattan, Gellar's hometown, INTENTIONS finds the actress in viper mode, spewing forth with vicious, sexually charged dialogue and swearing like a truck driver. So, is it really more fun to play the bad girl? "Oh, there's no question," she says instantly. "It's great to play the bad girl. But you have to love every role you do. I loved playing Kathryn. It was such fun to be that wicked and sexy and bitter and cynical. It was fun to manipulate everyone."=20 And how about that salty language? Did the words tumble easily out of Gellar's mouth? "That was the first thing [director-writer] Roger Kumble ever said to me," remembers Gellar, who dyed her hair dark for her role. "When I sat down to meet with him, he said, `So, can Buffy say these things?' My response was `Fuck, yeah!'"=20 And now onto BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, in its third and, arguably, finest season yet on the red-hot weblet, the WB. Gellar, of course, stars as the Chosen One, a slayer trying pull off the bloody complicated task of saving the world and leading the semblance of a normal existence as a teenager in high school, one dealing with peer pressure, sexual awakening and the college application process. The current season picked up where last year's finale, "Becoming, Parts I & II," left off. Buffy has returned to Sunnydale. The love of her life, Angel (David Boreanaz), is back on terra firma. There's a new slayer, =46aith (Eliza Dushku) in town, and Buffy's protective mentor, Giles (Anthony Stewart Head), just got fired=8Afor being too protective and growing too close to his charge. And, to be sure, there are monsters aplenty-real and imagined-with which to deal.=20 "I'm still having fun," Gellar enthuses. "I think the show is just now hitting its stride. We're making some scary episodes. Wes Craven [who directed her in SCREAM 2] would be proud. I'm a little nervous, a little apprehensive about where we're going, obviously, with David leaving [to star in his own spinoff series, ANGEL, debuting next season on the WB, in the post-BUFFY time slot]. David and I have wonderful chemistry. We've been working together for three years now. There's such trust there. I trust him completely and I give myself to him in every scene. And without David it will be scary."=20 Gellar won't discuss specifics about upcoming plots, but does drop a few hints and one bombshell. The seemingly burgeoning relationship between Giles and her mother (Kristine Sutherland) will probably go nowhere. Characters seen infrequently thus far this season may pop up. As for that bombshell: "I can tell you that we've got a couple of episodes will be all about Faith teaching Buffy about being a Slayer and vice-versa," the actress reveals. "We're getting into some really heavy material. Our big episode, `Bad Girls,' is incredible. Something happens in it that will change the course of Buffy's life for-EVER. And =46aith's life, too."=20 What viewers will not see, however, is Gellar herself altering Buffy in any significant way. If the character changes, it's the doing of series creator Joss Whedon. He runs the show and he's the master of Buffy's domain. The lead characters on many series begin as the creations of the writers, then, as the series evolves and as the stars' clout increases, the characters become the intellectual property of the actors. "That's not happening on BUFFY," Gellar says forcefully. "That's the beauty of the show. Joss is there, first of all, every single day. He has not disappeared. He has not abandoned us for anything. The characters are still Joss's creations. Joss will sometimes say to me, `Sarah, this is Buffy. It's not Sarah.' "And it's not. Buffy and all of the characters are still HIS characters. That's probably the genius of the show. Instead of letting us slip and tailoring storylines to us, we still have to play the characters Joss wants them to be. Judging by the terminology used by other characters in that show (including His Honor the Mayor), yes, the "he" referred to by that demon *is* Mr. Mayor (do we know anything about his actual name?). I believe that the Mayor used the word "ascension", which basically means "rising" (to ascend is to rise, in a sense). And as to the Mayor not being a monster - how do you know? We really don't know *anything* about the Mayor, or we didn't till "Bad Girls". Now the least-known character on the show is, so far as I can tell, the Principal, who really shouldn't have gone into that profession. The Mayor could easily be some sort of demonic critter, or a human (i.e., has a soul) magician of some variant of the Left-Hand Path, or he could be just an "ordinary" person. And after the dead fat guy scene, it cuts to the mayor casting the spell and then having a sword slice down the middle of the head have no effect on him. To me that's a monster, especially with green stuff inside him. That's why he said "you'll wish I killed you," cause if there's an enemy to be feared it's one that is impervious to physical attacks. Because at that time, they still didn't know the mayor's secrets. I mean when he said "when he rises" and then showed the mayor. And think of the timing, nearing the end of the season, now the gang knows, and the mayor has near invulnerability going for him. You can see the whole thing with RealPlayer and they have freeze frame pictures of the press conference. The typical questions were asked, but one insight is that the Buffy movie rumor isn't true. Sarah said that she hasn't seen a script yet that would do the show justice. But personally, I'm getting a little tired of always asking questions that don't get answered and having the moderators pick silly ones. I think we should come up with a list of questions that are good and that we all want to ask and then keep submitting them for the next online interview with Sarah.
