SkyBox decided NOT to guarantee one, though the promo card and sell sheet mention it. However, customer support feels they should honor the guarantee and if they are sent the UPC code form the bottom of the box and a letter stating they did not get one, they will send one off. WOW!! So, IOW, they wanted to promise the guarantee, get people to order the item based on that promise and then felt they didn't need to keep the promise. Does anyone wonder why I stopped collecting cards? Usually, such behavior is called "False Advertising", "Fraudulent Advertising" or, at the very least, "Bait and Switch". We were planning a trip to San Francisco to visit the kids. I suddenly realized there was a well-known Star Trek Convention being held in Los Angeles at about the time we were planning to return home. Our original plan was to fly home on a Saturday, after spending a week with the kids in S. F. The con was scheduled to begin the day before and go thru Sunday, so we decided to add that onto the trip and come home Monday. Big mistake. Why? Because the convention admission was $90 (3-day gen. adm. pass) and the hotel was an additional $180 (including breakfast). That's an additional $270 I spent for NOTHING. Why nothing? Because, unlike other cons where the price of admission gets you stars' autographs, panels and other kinds of entertainment, as well as a chance to mingle with a few thousand of your closest friends, this $90 just got you in the door. Autographs? - extra (even if you supplied the item to be signed)! Friday night dinner? - extra!! Saturday concert? - extra!! And the thousands of fans? Well, that's how many STAYED AWAY from this event. There were more stars than fans (approx. 75 celebs, according to the show's promoter) and even fewer dealers. I'm not sure why Bill Campbell wants to be associated with this type of disorganized looting, either. The printed schedule barely listed the major events and only approximated the times. My wife bought a Saturday ticket ($30 - for NOTHING) because Inge Heyer was scheduled to do an update on the Hubble Telescope's recent activity. They cancelled this event and did NOT notify anyone, not even on the chalkboard that was supposed to be just for things like that. We found out only by accidentally running into Inge, herself. The auctioneer was insulting to his audience, kept changing the way the auction ran from one day to the next and doesn't know the first thing about running a fair and legitimate auction. Let's see, what else can I say? Oh, yeah, I was extremely disappointed in this affair. I almost wish Creation wasn't going out of business (almost!!) Someone who apparently is local to the LA area told me that Fantasticon has gotten steadily worse every year. One disclaimer, here, regarding my comment about everyone charging for autographs: Marjorie Monaghan (Space Rangers, B5 and Rescue 77) did not charge me to sign a photo I brought and neither did Scarlett Pomers (VOY's Naomi Wildman). Is it coincidence that both these ladies were extremely charming, poised and friendly? I don't think so!! My best advice? Stay away from Fantasticon! If it's a choice between attending this con next year and poking myself in the eye with a sharp stick=85 I'll go for the stick. It's a lot cheaper and a LOT more fun. We discovered the program we were using did not allow a search throughout the full book, a bad thing if you want to look up one card in all this mess, so are awaiting an upgrade that will allow us to offer everyone a search feature. That seemed worth a bit of a wait. The wait was made worthwhile to me cause one image that had alluded me, the ABC box form 1968. I had tried often to find even an image (let alone an actual box) and last night, I got a scan! The 40-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was not immediately released. Officer Barbara Carranza, Los Angeles Police department spokeswoman, said Shatner arrived home around 10 p.m. and found his wife in the water. ``He pulled his wife from the pool, called 911 and was instructed to begin CPR, which he did,'' she said. By the time firefighters arrived, the caller had apparently pulled the woman out of the water. ``Sadly, she was beyond our help,'' Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. Shatner's manager, Larry Thompson, said he hadn't heard about a death there. ``I know nothing about this,'' Thompson said. Shatner is best known as Capt. James T. Kirk on the science fiction television show ``Star Trek.'' He also appeared in several ``Star Trek'' movies and the 1980s television police drama ``T.J. Hooker.'' Carranza said the cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles coroner's office. AP-NY-08-10-99 0507EDT Copyright 1999 The Associated Press. The promo's are identical on the front (the lenticular side) as the cards from the set will be. The backs are totally different though. I guess this means that it's should be possible to put together a complete set of 24 lenticular cards that all have the promo back. Promo's Back: Every promo's back is exactly the same and has the following info: Star Trek (tm) In Motion (tm) Promotional Card 1 of 500 TM, (r) & (c) 1999 Paramount Pictures. All Rights Reserved. STAR TREK is a Trademark of Paramount Pictures. Rittenhouse Archives Authorized User. Real Cards Back: These will have two full color photos, text and other Trek design stuff. Also, the sheets that are being included with the binder are Rembrandt/Ultra pro so they should be archival quality (acid free.) One other item to note is that the Case-Topper (CS1) Sound-in-Motion card is limited to 1000 and the binders (including BS1 Sound-in-Motion card) is limited to 999. -J!m mailto:encore@xmission.com To Unsubscribe from TrekChat send and put "unsubscribe trekchat" in the body without the quotes. -- Previous message archives are available via WWW at: or via FTP at: ftp.xmission.com --in-- /home/ftp/pub/lists/trekchat/archive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Lynne Stewart" Subject: (TrekChat) Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 13:55:15 -0400 Date: 13 Aug 1999 11:59:25 -0600 Archive and Unsubscribe information can be found at the bottom of this message. -- > I HOPE THAT YOU CAN HELP ME, > I PICKED UP A STAR TREK DIORAMA OF SORTS, > IT SAYS ON THE BOTTOM > STAR TREK U.S.S. Maintaining a site is very time consuming. But I'd think anyone who would like to run a site would rather do it for fun and enjoyment instead of it becomming a chore. If it became a chore, then charging to view wouldn't make it better necessarily. Sure, the site owner would be more motivated to update, but then again, grumbling about having to update the site was what brought that person to the decision of charging in the first place. If someone isn't happy doing a site anymore, the best thing would either shut it down, or leave it as is with a notice of abandonment. In my opinion that is :) Ricky To Unsubscribe from TrekChat send and put "unsubscribe trekchat" in the body without the quotes. -- Previous message archives are available via WWW at: or via FTP at: ftp.xmission.com --in-- /home/ftp/pub/lists/trekchat/archive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Lynne Stewart" Subject: Re: (TrekChat) HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING Date: 17 Aug 1999 20:27:55 -0400 Archive and Unsubscribe information can be found at the bottom of this message. -- I don't think the concept of charging for content has anything to do with a site owners happiness of unhappiness or it being a chore. a person can be completely satisfied with the site, but can't afford to continue it. Let's say a site is so popular that to maintain it at the level that the readers expect, alot of time must be spent; the site owner might consider cutting back on his work hours or some such thing. Well, he needs to make up the $$ somewhere, so he charges a buck a month. He now can justify the time spent since he is making $$ Fun and enjoyment don't pay the bills, ya know. The readers can accept a less then par site that fits the time constraints of the site owner or if they feel it merits the extra attention, cough up the bucks. In that context, then yes, charging for web-site access is a viable way to go. As long as the content on the site is worth charging for - i.e. not found elsewhere or is of good quality. But, if someone is going to start charging because they find it takes a little more time in their schedules whether they need the money or not, that's out of unhappiness to keep the site running. I imagin > at this point it turns into a full time business. Absolutely, I agree with you one hundred percent and this is why I wouldnt do it. Thugh I don't agree with the concept that aperson starts to charge for content cause he's unhappy or tired of his site, I think he could be unhappy or bored...realllllly quick with the responsibility charging for content implies. FOr myself, this woud take all the fun out of it. But, if we use me as an example, I have an informational site that is free. But, I also have parts that generate money, the auctionne and the store. THhis would offset any oney I feel I woud need to 'earn' to pay off my bills and whatnot. BUT, and this is where the original covnersation started for me yesterday, how does a magazine take content to the web? FOr example, NSU has a web page, but it's basically a big advertizement for the magazine. Is there a way to bring a magazine online? If you give it away for free online, why would anyone pay for the subscriptions? If you charge for online content, how do youpull it off? Most people are reluctant to pay for stuff online. I know I don't subscribe to any pay sites and wouldn't consider asking anyone to pay for mine (and in case I dodn't say this yesterday can not stand banner ads and whatnot), NSU, except for ads, doesnt generate any real revenue, outside of subscriptions, so how do they make money on the nets? Using NSU is just an example, I would think this woudl apply to all mags and newspapers. > > So If one can't afford to do it, Dont do it... Or do it, and if it fails > just file bankbupcy... Some dude started a web page when he was 16, rating different motherboards or whatever. To maintain the type of website his readers were begging for, he dropped out of college and needed some way to earn a living, he started doing banner ads and such, but he found himself so busy doing that sort of work, he wasnt able to spend the time on the content of the site like hewould like. His site, so popular now, was recently bought out by Earthlink for several million dollars. He now, can go back to doing just the content stuff........ I don't see much reason to make people pay for content on my site, just buy my stuff now and again, but I can see where some sites will need to do it. Hmm...I think a majority, If not all online magizines have some kind of major backing via advertisers, major manufactures and whatnot that can support that kind of quality site. For example, i use traderonline http://www.traderonline.com/ alot for comparitive shopping for car stuff, RV stuff and boat stuff. You allways see a banner on this website among other links. You can even advertise your own ad for 20 some days online for FREE. Someone is paying someone so that you can do that sort of thing. The actuall paper magizine sales probibaly handles part of it along with the ads people want/put into the paper mag. Just giving you a hard time for old times sake, Lynne. Just a quick comment on the "online magazine" and "pay-for-content sites" discussion: The way "Entertainment Weekly" does it (they have their entire issue, with links, up on the Net) is to have their subscribers enter their name for access to the entire content. Non-subscribers can see some stuff but not everything. As far as no one paying for something they can get elsewhere for free; that's simply not true. People buy Juno Mail and Internet Yellow Pages books all the time. This is only the most recent example, but people have been buying diskettes and CD's full of Freeware and Shareware ever since these things existed. Some pay for the convenience of getting it the easy way and some pay because they don't know HOW to get it free; but they do pay. Anyone who buys a book is paying for something he can get for free at his local library and anyone who buys USA today is paying for news he can get on TV or radio. We won't even get into people who buy vegetables they can get for free from their neighbor's garden. Seriously, lots of people pay for things that are free elsewhere.Been going on for years. We don't think of it in this context because we are used to searching the 'Net for what we want. There are lots of people who don't know how to search, don't want to search or just need instant gratification. Just my 2 credits-worth. Vince Maiocco, Lt. I don't exactly consider someone who has a whole web page dedicated to him and his numerous ripping off of people and their cards and someone who has multiple newsgroup posts about his bad trading activity to be someone I feel can gauge my character, clean up your own house, my friend. ...there is no web page.. but there was one yes... that doesnt mean what is on it is true.. u should know that.. pissing off a few idiots on a newsgroup and having them take the time to harass me with lies and accusations doesnt mean that what they are saying is fact.. its not.. i have never ripped anyone off ever... not one single person.. if u did some homework and i know u wont.. u would find that each person who has posted such a thing about me anywhere.. has no idea who i am or anything about me... they have never dealt with me and they have never sent me anything.. much less agreed to... i have had a few bad experiences with people. some of whom tried to rip me off.. when i dont let them.. some of them become upset at this.. and strike out however they can... i have been on ebay ever since u suggested it.. and i have sold and bought even traded in some cases with others on there.. its been just over a year. and i dont do much on there but i do have over 114 positives on there.. and one neg.. that neg was a mistake but as u know those can not be rectified. so it stands.. the details are that i didnt get what i was told i was going to and i returned it to the seller thats all. it was in horrible condition and wasnt what it was advertised as being.. but the 114 positives do have some meaning i would think... i also have a list of 50 names of people who i have dealt with who know im not a rip off.. this list was 167 long.. but i had a hard drive crash.. and lost that list.. so i started it up again about 2 months ago.. or so.. these names are not ovelapping with any of the names on ebay either.. so thats a lot more names of people who know im not a rip off.. just cuz u hear something about someone doesnt mean its true.. but where i wont let someone rip me off.. sometimes this pisses people off.. and they just post whatever they wish.. 90% of them dont even know me.. and the majority of the people who do.. have used more than one name to make it appear that they are numerous in number.. i have been online since march 94.. i had gotten online for the sole purpose of doing business and trading etc.. there is no mention of anything inappropriate til sept of 98.. a good 4 years after i started dealing online.. i didnt start cards til march 97.. but of course if u would go by what u have heard.. and not what is actual fact.. u would see that most of what u have heard was just a bunch of lies and false accusations intended to do nothing more than provoke me... i stand by my claim that not even one person has ever been ripped off by me.. As t the coupon, sure you can have one, problem is even before all this, I wouldn't have sold to you anyhow, so it won't do you much good. ....u have offered to sell to me previously .. u just wanted the money upfront.. which of course makes sense.. i would expect the same.. especially since i have been doing mail order since 1980 myself.. thats how everyone works.. altho now i have been ripped off a few times in trades.. so i even insist on the trader sending first to trade with me... while this has curbed much of my online trading.. it seems to have stopped most of the ripping off that i have experienced.. but u have offered to sell to me.. that u wont honor the coupon was to be expected.. i knew that there was nothing legit about that offer.. and when u did offer it .. u only take it back by saying u wont sell to me anyway... geeesh.. Sorry trekchat, I'm done, I thought I was done yesterday, but I haven't had any caffeine yet, now I gotta learn how to make this email program block out a person's email address....I can't be taunted into nasty thoughts if I can't see 'em....:)>> ...i didnt get nasty til u did... u accused me of lying.. i never lied.. i did call collect twice.. only on the second call did i find out what u said to be true.. u didnt hear it as a rumor on the street as u said.. and all i did was offer what i heard first.. then i checked it out again when u told me i was wrong.. and i found out that in fact i was.. i never said i cant be wrong.. Jeff, that's because you strive for accuracy - they're just striving for sales! >Even in the past year i,v been carefull to avoid bidding on items=20 >where shipping costs nearly equal the costs of the item.. :Sheesh:!=20 Yes, we've talked about this before. Now, I won't even bid on an item that says "money order or cashier's check only". I figger, if they look at my feedback and won't take my check, then it's I that should worry about THEIR honesty. I even send eMail to people who have flat-out misquoted an item's age or some other fact, assuming it was an honest mistake. Suppose you were mailing a valuable old book, or someone's paper money collection? Would they say the same thing? Perhaps the individual you were talking to just doesn't think "trading cards" have any real value. =20 I'd drop them a line at their website. LLAP, Vince PS: I've been told that USPS will allow you to insure a package for any amount you want, but then, if it gets lost or destroyed, they require proof of value. Also, if you send, let's say, a set of four glasses in one box and 2 of them get destroyed, the USPS will only give you money for two of them, even though the entire set is no longer of value.
