A-HA! I realized that a private auction meant the bidders' names didn't show, but I'd be real concerned not to know the bid amounts. How is that actually an auction? What I really mean is, how can that actually benefit the buyer? In my mind, the beauty of an auction is that both buyer and seller benefit; the seller knows he got what the market will bear for the item and the buyer knows he paid no more than market value. How is that true in a private auction? The Hell with that!! How is that true in a private auction? I have to express my agreement that any eBay auction establishes a "market value." If a new card set comes out and 2 people with lots of money are eager to complete their sets rapidly, they may each be willing to pay twice the market value for a card. If they bid against each other, one of them will pay twice the market value. Once the two of them have obtained what they want, there may be nobody else out there willing to pay as much. You see this a lot, when a card sells for a ridiculous price, the next seller assumes that is market value and sets an absurdly high reserve price or starting price, and nobody bids. I don't think any meaningful market value is established until there have been several auctions, or a LOT of participants in one auction, with many of them bidding near the final selling price. Seems wrong... definitely disappointing sand annoying, but there's probably nothing you can do about it. Unless you wanna leave neg F/B on him. He just sounds like someone who doesn't feel compelled to keep promises when money is involved. Hey, here's an idea: Find his iyrm for auction on eBay, place a ridiculously high bid so that no matter what anyone else bids, you'll be the winner. Then, when he contacts you, tell him you saw it lower somewhere else and changed your mind... sorry for any inconvenience. It occurs to me that the person offering should say that he'll hold the item for some short period until he hears from you but then after that, he'll offer them elsewhere. And you should probably mention the same thing when you accept the offer. Also, I forgot to mention that, while you thought of his offer as unsolicited, he probably got your email as a bidder for other Trek items on eBay. I think we have to realize that we invite this sort of solicitation by being registered on eBay. After all, no matter what they say, eBay's MAIN CUSTOMER is the seller, not the buyer. But I have no idea what the differences between the two batches are (if any exist at all). Why don't you ask that ebay seller what the differences are? As you indicated, it does sound like a sales pitch to me. Back in 1991, when they first came out at retail, I can remember seeing about 10-15 of these Enterprises in a Hallmark store. I grabbed one of them for myself and left the rest sitting there. If I only knew..... Good luck in any event. --Andrew To Unsubscribe from TrekChat send and put "unsubscribe trekchat" in the body without the quotes. -- Previous message archives are available via WWW at: or via FTP at: ftp.xmission.com --in-- /home/ftp/pub/lists/trekchat/archive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Vince Maiocco Subject: Re: (TrekChat) Hallmark ornament question. Well, here's what I remember hearing at the time of the "runs": Hallmark did a run and it sold so quickly, and created such a large backorder that they decided to do something they had never (or very rarely) done before; they did a second run. This run served merely to fill the back orders and actually never nade it to the shelves. They wanted to do an unprecedented third run, but there wasn't time before the end of the year. Hallmark has promised that they will never produce a particular year's ornament after the last day of that year and, apparently, even the popularity of this one didn't convince them to change the policy. I hasten to repeat that this was only what I "heard" about the issue. Besides, if there was a difference between the first run and the second, then many collectors would consider them 2 different runs (since they're not identical) and we would have heard of this from several sources, not just on guy trying to sell one. I also heard that, next year, on the strength of the first one, they went nutz producing the shuttlecraft and wound up with a glut. They apparently failed to realize that the 1991 ornament was popular partly because that was the 25th anniversary of the series, not to mention their very first Trek ornament. As far as I know, no other Trek ornament has even come close to the sales volume the first one did. J!m, if you learn any more, keep us posted. I'd really like to hear more about this issue.
