(or dont' want) Make a list of things you would like to see and things you don't. Everyone, if they hear enough of our thoughts eventually they will know where we are coming from. If you are tired of hearing of this topic, I am sorry! I don't usually get into "pass this on to all your friends" emails, but this has rattled me a bit. One of the variations, Mother's Day, implies you have been billed $300 for a gift and please confirm this attached invoice. Unlike the Love Bug, this one attacks .bat files and could seriously damage your system. See below. Avoid all attachments, be safe! Before the notice on the new viruses, I am restating the free offer I made to my Auctionne group. *************** Yesterday, I did a stupid thing and opened an attachment that infected me with the ILOVEYOU virus. For those of you who hadn't heard that virus, among other things, deletes all JPEGS (images) on the user's hard drive. I lost over 6000 images scanned over the last several years for the website and book. I am awaiting James' return tonight to see how old our last backup is and the contents of the CDROM are safe since the images are part of the Adobe files and not separate images so not affected, but the loss of the scans remains a sad loss. I utilized the scans in many other ways as reference and I regret the loss immensely. The fault is my own and I want to take this email to tell you a few things..DON'T OPEN ATTACHMENTS!!! If you get one you aren't expecting, ask the sender..if they confirm it's validity, fine. This email was sent to me by Fleer SkyBox (no I didn't think they loved me, but I don't know that I was thinking of it in those terms :giggle:), but surely not a place I was expecting a virus from...;) BACK UP YOUR FILES! And not infrequently, as I did, but OFTEN! This was an avoidable virus..you had to open it..one of these days, it will be of a sort you can't avoid and I wish noone to be sad like me. :) Send me proof of a new purchase of an ant virus software or backup hardware and I will send you free of charge one of the below(as part of an order or you pay postage): 1. Cyberaction promo set of 4 2. 1 month of free consignment fees in the Auctionne 3. Metallic Impressions P1 Enterprise promo 4. $5 off the Card Collective 5. Something cool I might find in the future I don't know of yet...;) ******************* 'Love' Virus Morphs to Trick Users Watch out for variants labeled 'Joke' and 'Mother's Day.' By Eric Auchard, Reuters May 5, 2000 Copycat variants of the "Love Bug" worm labeled "Joke" and "Mother's Day" infected computers around the world on Friday, a day after the most widespread cyberattack ever wreaked havoc on business and government operations. Tens of millions of the computers have been disabled so far as the worm, first detected in Asia, spread around the globe, forcing network administrators to shut down email systems at major companies and penetrating the Pentagon, the Central Intelligence Agency and Britain's Parliament. Security experts said the worm was far more devastating than last year's Melissa virus, with losses now counting in the billions from damaged data and the distractions of fighting the software scourge, and warned that it could take weeks to stem the invasion. The original virus "ILOVEYOU", which worked by enticing email recipients to open an attached letter, only to cripple their email systems. This so-called Love Bug continued to pop up in email systems on Friday, even as variants appeared to pose new tricks for computer users. But the effect of the virus is unchanged: Upon opening the attachment using Microsoft software such as Outlook or Outlook Express, it sends a copy of the worm to everyone in the user's address book and seeks to destroy a variety of files throughout a computer network, including picture and music files. In one version designed to spoil the upcoming "Mother's Day" holiday that will be celebrated in the United States on May 15, a variant of LoveLetter sends emails which appear to be a confirmation of an electronic gift order. "The Mother's Day version of this worm is quite cunning," said Mikko Hypponen, manager of antivirus research at computer security firm F-Secure Corp.'s laboratories in Helsinki, Finland. "The email appears to be a confirmation of an order for 'Mother's Day diamond special,' and the attached file mothersday.vbs is portrayed as if it were an invoice. With only eight days to go until Mother's Day, this attack is quite credible," he said. F-Secure has identified five variants so far in its efforts to keep pace with the worldwide assault. One scary aspect of the new variants is that they prey on behavior patterns that most people don't think twice about. "I think everyone in the world has seen the news about the "ILOVEYOU" virus. But say your computer has been affected by the virus. You're having a miserable day. And you open something that says 'Very funny,' because you need a laugh. The next thing you know, you're infected all over again. Lynne I'm addicted to Star Trek cards...are you? I bought a case of DS9 MOF, pulled 5 redemption cards (bbbooooo) I knew that was a chance, though, so I'm not really complaining. Anyway, one of the redemption cards was the Berman card...(of course!). I do not collect DS9, but when the set came out, I was interested in the Berman card. I have all the other producer cards and wanted this one as well. I gave up that wish when I saw the cost! Cheap, I would justify buying a DS9 card..expensive...not so much...;) Anyway, here's my dilemma....if the redemption card has little value, I would keep it, call it 'close enough' to the real thing. If there is enough interest in it the card, I would sell. SO, should I list the card with a starting price that is as high as I would consider selling it for OR list it at whatever...say, $10 starting, (since I really don't know it's value) and then feel free to bid until it goes past the point I would stop being interested in it anymore? I asked when I first started the Auctionne, if it was an ethical issue for me to bid in my own Auctionne and most people agreed at the time that since I collect, why shouldn't I be free to bid as long as I wasn't price fixing. I was curious to know where this fits? Lynne I'm addicted to Star Trek cards...are you? Overall I cannot imagine many sets of Trek cards which could still be produced. Perhaps the time has come for Skybox to give up and give us all a rest. The only set I would be interested in would be movie profiles. The reason for this is because apart from the rather unusual box sets of cards, the movies are very under represented. Not that I'm justifying the overuse of some characters....but for James Doohan, there actually was a reason. ODdly, you are allowed to bid on your item once (is it to win it to close the auctionne or to price adjust, I'm not sure) In that case, I would have had to select a higher starting bid then I would have otherwise to push it past the point I would just keep it for myself. > By the way, who's selling off their entire collection. One other thing, I wish we could convince them...auto cards are GREAT. I love them, but it is not the be all of a for sure sale set. If the prices of the Lenticulars from Voyager CTH don't show that, I'm not sure what will. A set doesn't have to have autos to be good, but it DOES need to be new and creative. I would love for Rittenhouse to carry foreword their Memoriam cards like they did for DeForest..they could do some for alot of the fallen, that would be cool... Date: 13 May 2000 18:51:18 -0400 James found this while surfing a stamp site (Subway Stamps) I thought it was cute and post it here for your pleasure...;) **** There's an old saying "You don't have to be crazy to collect but it helps". I guarantee I was the collector they had in mind. When Subway moved to Altoona, Pa (August, 1994) I started to pick up little bits of Altoona's history including picture postcards, postal history and other memorabilia of Subway's new home. In five years I have accumulated many thousands of postcards, old letters and documents, stereo views, pictures, blueprints of the railroad years, collector plates and more. Being in the hobby supply business I have every kind and style of album ever made. Where is this 'collection' kept? Thats easy - in shoe boxes until I find time (when???) to sort it all. I purchased a collection of over 1,000 pre-addressed envelopes (to the Lily Coal Company, Altoona, Pa USA), all mailed in the 1890's and all franked with the 1893 World Colombian issue stamps. This is sorted by city - state cancellations. It came that way. If I had to sort it the collection would still be in shoe boxes. Last month I passed the outer limits of sanity when I purchased a brick (yes - a BRICK) because is was embossed 'Altoona B & T Company, Altoona Pa". I immediately called Vidiform Company (Showgard) and asked what kind of albums they had for bricks. (4 " thick, 4 " wide, 8 " long, 9 lbs). I will be the first in line as soon as the new Showgard 'brick' album is ready. Since then I have acquired 3 additional 'Altoona' bricks. Anyone out there make a brick catalog? Today I outdid myself in the brick incident. A local homeowner cleaning out his father's estate brought in about 40 bottles of 'Altoona Curve Beer". (Do not confuse with the new Altoona Curve baseball team and ballpark that just opened and sells beer at the games.) These bottles are about 50-60 years old. They are in 2 very dusty "Altoona Curve Beer boxes" and about a third of the bottles are sealed with the original beer inside. The homeowner suggested I not drink the beer as it probably was what killed his father and might do the same to me. In the morning I will call Showgard and see what kind of albums they make for beer bottles. Even I don't have the nerve to ask it they have an album to hold the box the beer comes in. Keep collecting and if you ever think you have are ready to be committed just remember my Altoona brick and beer collections. P.S.: If you find any Altoona bricks you sure know where to sell them. This card was listed in the last issue of Collect magazine with a book value of $1500.00.Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions & also check my feedback. Winner pays 7.00 for priority shipping & Insurance. International bidders pay 10.00 for global priority mail & Insurance. Good luck & may the best bidder Win! Problem 1. (is a personal issue for me) I don't wanna pay $3.20 for priority mail for ONE CARD. Problem 2. Using Collect as a guide may not be the best idea right now...;) at this point it's pretty much a guarantee to be outdated...;) Lynne 1.I'm addicted to Star Trek cards...are you? Well, if the card is REALLY worth $1500, why quibble? My problem is that, if Pri-Mail is 320 and Insurance is a buck or 2, what's the rest actually for? Isn't he making enough at $1500 for a single card? >Problem 2. Now that the redemption period is over, the value is quite a bit less and COllect doesn't reflect that, Obviously, since there are no more updates..;) Cousrse for all I know NSU says the same thing..I don't watch guides, so what do I know...;) Lynne To Unsubscribe from TrekChat send and put "unsubscribe trekchat" in the body without the quotes. -- Previous message archives are available via WWW at: or via FTP at: ftp.xmission.com --in-- /home/ftp/pub/lists/trekchat/archive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Lynne Stewart" Subject: (TrekChat) Best and worst card sale Date: 24 May 2000 15:48:45 -0400 What was your best and worse card purchase.... I thought about some of those as well. When I was very new at the nets and collecting, I learned of two cards of a set of Ingot cards I didn't have...I called the company, begged myself into a pair of the two missing cards and when I got them, I was as thrilled as if I had pulled a mirror card (I was easier to please back then!) Sometimes it's not the rarest card that's cool, it's the coolest hunt...;) Lynne To Unsubscribe from TrekChat send and put "unsubscribe trekchat" in the body without the quotes. -- Previous message archives are available via WWW at: or via FTP at: ftp.xmission.com --in-- /home/ftp/pub/lists/trekchat/archive
