I just thought I'd jot down a few thoughts about Skybox losing the licence. Overall I'm pleased because I'm sick of the amount of product they kept pumping out. Having said that, there's no denying that their quality was the best we've ever had. I'm quite baffled by the situation which Rittenhouse seems to have inherited. They can produce cards but not standard sized trading cards. Personally I was never overly keen on the other Rittenhouse sets because of size. I hope they didn't pay too much for the licence, because a lot of people are going to say they're not trading cards and I'm not going to collect. On the other hand, that means fewer sets and that's what many of us seem to want. Would a market recovery be asking for too much ... Consider that Rittenhouse now has two contracts with Paramount. One contract, which is good for, I think, two years more, is what we have already seen them do..oversized lenticular and oversized standard cardstock trading cards. Now, they have a new contract. This one will allow for what I mentioned above. No one gets anything else as I understand it. I guess Paramount decided a cooling off period was in order. I had spoken to Paramount about the future a few months ago and they mentioned it as a possibility. I assume they may allow new series and movie cards too at some point Lynne > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-trekchat@lists.xmission.com > [mailto:owner-trekchat@lists.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Ruth Ansari > Sent: Tuesday, January 02, 2001 12:25 PM > To: trekchat@xmission.com > Subject: (TrekChat) New Licence > > > Happy New Year! > > I just thought I'd jot down a few thoughts about Skybox > losing the licence. > Overall I'm pleased because I'm sick of the amount of product > they kept > pumping out. Lynne, with your new mailing lists, you have an option for a test list that says you could receive thousands of messages.... what if the person mysteriously got added to that list and suddenly got hundreds nay, thousands, of messages sent to them? >:) Just kidding. Two bidders have currently sent this seller funds. One I have the email from her acknowledging the receipt of payment...and didn't ship out the cards (both buyers won a First Contact card set) The second came foreword after I had already banned her because of the first sale. Not sure yet if there is anyone else. The amounts are small, I consider the principle large, we need a safe buying and selling environment! I already have gone public on the Auctionne and in my emails with the sellers email address (as stated in the Auctionne rules for deadbeat sellers) so listing it here doesn't seem in appropriate: Choco252@aol@aol.com Choco252@aol@aol.com wrote: > > Hi! I'm just being petty aren't I...;) Lynne *** As eBay continued to rapidly add members and expand into new merchandise categories and geographic regions, the popular Internet auction site on Thursday reported a fourth quarter profit that was larger than forecasts. EBay, which operates the largest online auction service where individuals and businesses exchange merchandise ranging from toys to real estate, said it earned $23.9 million, or 9 cents per diluted share, in the latest quarter, compared with operating earnings of $5.1 million or 2 cents per diluted share a year ago. On average, analysts who follow the company had forecast earnings of 7 cents per share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial, which tracks forecasts. "Our fourth quarter results capped off a year of record success across all metrics, including gross merchandise sales, listings growth, user growth, revenues, and profits," eBay Chief Executive Meg Whitman said in a statement. "We are extremely pleased with the strength of our business and with the tremendous momentum we have going into the new year." EBay said its revenues rose 81 percent to $134 million from $73.9 million in the year-ago quarter. The company also predicted strong future growth, saying it expects full year 2001 revenues could approach $665 million, compared with $431.4 million for the year 2000. The company said it expects revenues for the first quarter of 2001 to approach $150 million. EBay said it expects its gross margins to remain in the mid-80s for most of the year, although they could dip to 80 percent around midyear as the company steps up its investment in infrastructure. EBay said it added 3.5 million registered users during the fourth quarter, bringing the total to 22.5 million. Its gross merchandise sales, or the value of goods traded on the site, totaled $1.6 billion during the quarter, an increase of 79 percent over the fourth quarter last year. EBay hosted 79.4 million auctions during the fourth quarter, compared with 41 million in the year-ago quarter. EBay stock, which had rallied 3.63 during the regular trading session to end at 46.88, was quoted about $3 higher in early after-market activity following the release of earnings. **** Lynne Stewart http://www.jklm.net/index.html KLM Enterprises, Inc. You may need a big paycheck like those players to play with the latest edition of basketball trading cards from the Upper Deck Company. If you reeled when the price of a pack of trading cards made the big leap from 35-cents to a dollar, and then if you were shocked when trading cards reached $2 a pack and then $3 a pack, and if you went comatose when some packs of cards reached $5, hold on! The $100 (one-hundred dollar) pack of basketball cards is here. “They’re for the high rollers,” one Upper Deck Company employee confided in me with a chuckle in his voice. “They’ll be bought and sold and opened in smoky back rooms for the whales (what Las Vegas mega-rollers are called),” he continued jokingly. $100 a pack for basketball cards – and to add to the amazement, there are only four cards in a pack, and not even a stick of gum. But these are far from your ordinary cards. In each $100 pack the buyer will find one rookie player card that is sealed in plastic and has been graded – meaning it has a score attesting to its fine condition. In the aftermarket and in online auctions, graded cards are “liquid” and easily traded because buyers and sellers have a third-party authentication source to fall back on. Remember, in sports card trading bent corners can kill a card’s value, and the authentication will tell you just how pristine the card is in the plastic case. The plastic cases are also tamper-proof, preventing a cheat from removing a high-grade card and replacing it with a lower-graded card and keeping the high-grade label. Any attempt to open the plastic case will result in the case shattering. Along with the graded rookie card will be three other cards, ungraded, that could make the $100 price tag worthy of the gamble. “We think people are willing to take the chance on these packs,” that Upper Deck employee told me. Among those other three cards in the pack, collectors might find a jersey card, a patch card or an autographed card. The jersey and patch cards have actual pieces of player-worn jerseys and uniform patches imbedded in the cardboard; yes, they are highly prized and can be very valuable. Adding to the possible payoff in a pack of cards is Upper Deck’s buy-back promotion. UD has gone into the aftermarket and bought back older and classic cards and is inserting some of these in selected packs. Some of the buy-back cards are those of Michael Jordan, Shaq, Kobe Bryant, Grant Hill, Vince Carter and five other stars. Some of the buy-back cards are autographed by the players pictured on the cards. There’s more that might make the $100 price tag understandable. UD is also including autographed cards in some packs, and the autographed cards are limited in number. For example, UD will have several series of autographed Kobe Bryant cards: the bronze series will have the cards numbered to a maximum of 200, the silver series will be numbered to 75, and the gold series will be numbered to 25. Of course, the card you are looking for is the “super series” card which will be numbered 1/1 meaning there is only one of the “super series.” Besides autographed cards of Kobe, there will also be autographed series of cards for Michael Jordan and Kevin Garnett and others. BACK TO REALITY But let’s get back to reality: $100 for a pack of four cards, even if one is “graded” in a plastic holder? Will these sell? And who will buy them? I chatted with a couple of dealers who speculate that the only buyers will be the dealers, because they have the cash to take a gamble – hoping to “pull” a Kobe or Jordan 1/1 autographed super card. Dealers will then put cards like that on eBay hoping to score a big profit – even after allowing for the hundreds if not thousands of dollars that they’ll spend buying other packs that will not yield such treasures. “These packs will truly separate the men from the boys,” dealer Jeff Butler of Coins Plus in Newhall, California confided in me, “because the men will have the $100 to buy a pack and the boys with their $5 a week allowance won’ t.” THE $50 A PACK FOOTBALL CARDS Upper Deck recently sold a series of football cards at $50 a pack that was very much like these basketball cards. Each pack came with a graded rookie card in a plastic holder plus three additional football cards. However, a look at the aftermarket shows that the $49 price could have been a bad bet. Very few of the graded rookie cards sold for anything around $50 in online auctions on eBay. In fact, most sold in the range of $10 each, and some of the additional ungraded cards sold on eBay in recent auctions for only a couple of dollars each. Two graded rookie cards are the exception: Ron Dayne’s autographed cards have been selling for about $140 each on eBay auctions, and Ron Dayne’s jersey cards have been selling for about $40 each on eBay. Could the new basketball cards – in general – have a similar fate for their buyers who are hoping to rack up profits on eBay? Anybody willing to bet a hundred? The new cards will be released to dealers in mid-February. Good luck. Of course, you could take the same $100 to Vegas and get free drinks. NEW SURVIVOR CARDS Upper Deck has also announced that it will soon be shipping trading cards that will allow users to also play a Survivor game, much like the TV show. With the cards you’ll play the part of a castaway, vote other players off the island, and use the cards to score points in the competition. The basic pack of cards will be priced at $9.99 and packs of additional cards will be priced at $2.99 each. Once stored as files, they aren't usable. When in the Auctionne, they are presented in a format that users can search them, but if the files aren't associated with the Auctionne. it's a pile of files with numbers and the only way to find the one you wanted was if you had the original gobbly gook of numbers to tell me which file to pull (assuming someone needed to refer to a specific file). Even then, it's bulky and hard to work with and I like users to have good access to what they need. MY ISP can't tolerate the number of files the Auctionne generates. Each and every item is a file, so all active and 30 days worth of files between the Auctionne and my other stuff and I have hit a limit that they can't/won't change. And I just moved two months ago, paid for a year, so I'm stuck. Another thought might be to copy/paste the data while it's onscreen to a simple editor (like Notepad or Wordpad) and then anyone with a text editor could view it... But maybe that's too much work? Why? Lynne, Hmm.. Choices choices. Do you want hundreds of items (Volume) that get sold at low prices all the time? Or do you want high priced items that don't get sold week after week after week? These Items should just be posted on the groups. I see this all the time. Maybe an option is to change the rules? I don't know.. These are difficult decisions. I'm glad I'm not making them.. I feel that this auction site has great potential for growth. Since the spotlight is off of any new skybox products this will give more time for us collectors to catch up on everything that we have passed up the past few years. Another plus is since eBays auction site has gotten to darn expensive to try to sell a card that's worth less than a $1. It's not worth the trouble. This makes your site the place to go. I've also noticed you have quite a few new users. This is great! I just hope you can keep up. I Sound like an ecomerce commercial don't I?
