I get a lot of hits for star trek stuff on my site. I figured you were a shoe in, but I've never looked at the internals of your pages to see if that was the case. Check it out.... http://www.corfman.com/robert/cityu/searchengine/ It is getting to be a dated paper (over 3 years old), but I'll wager it is still just as valuable as it was when I wrote it. I have a lot of links in there, some of them may not be any good anymore, but one that I enjoy, that still works is: http://www.metaspy.com/ Don't use the exposed link unless you have not shame. It is amazing the percentage of searches that are "dirty" rather than clean.... Enjoy. (Lynne... does this count as one of my posts?) Date: 17 May 2001 09:09:04 -0400 eBay users outraged over link policy Drawing comparisons between eBay and Big Brother, SuperSellers responded with anger and frustration when asked to voice their opinions about the online auction giant's decision regarding the placement of hyperlinks on its View Item pages. eBay announced last week that beginning May 31, eBay will only allow links to eBay, Half.com listings and third-party credits from the View Item page. Nearly 200 eBay users contacted SuperSeller about this issue (all of the responses can be seen by clicking here http://www.krause.com/news/newsrelease_0.html). The vast majority viewed the decision as an attempt by eBay to eliminate a seller's right to free enterprise. "There's no doubt many businesses, such as my own, were benefiting from having direct Web site links in their auctions," Neil Flagg said. "However, having these links is the only reason why we had over 200 auctions running at any given time, creating billings of nearly $1,000 a month for eBay. By eliminating this advertising component of the auctions, they are causing us to cut way back on auction listings, and thus we will be billing far less in eBay fees." "I'm furious," Mickey Kaz said. "This is yet another attempt to monopolize the auction business online and keep every penny for eBay." eBay spokesman Kevin Pursglove is aware of the discontent many users have expressed and said the decision was not an easy one for the company to make. "We knew that many of our users were going to be disappointed," he said. "We talked to a good number of buyers and sellers before making the decision and there were a lot of our Powersellers who did not want us to enforce the policy. Others who talked to us said, 'OK, if you're going to do this, enforce it fairly and across the board.' We really believe that in the long run this is going to make for a better marketplace for all of our users." Andrew Smith is not so sure. He believes the decision will stifle the growth of online entrepreneurs, an area in which eBay has been a pioneer. "To regulate the means by which a totally new economy is developing will only slow its growth," he said. "If your consultants are not looking at where the economy will be in 10 years, you are not making sensible decisions. eBay's actions appear to be profit driven and very short term." Instead of abolishing such hyperlinks, some eBay users suggested a fee could be imposed for sellers who want to have personal links on their View Item page. "Those vendors who are making a reasonable profit off of it would find it worthwhile (and) those who are not making much off of it would simply opt out," Don Abbe said. Several sellers believe having personal Web links presents a sense of credibility to buyers, a vital component of the auction process. Other eBay users begged to differ. "I totally agree that eBay should limit the listing of off-site links," Betty Raby said. "As a buyer, I find it increasingly difficult to tell what many (sellers) are actually selling. Descriptions should be of the item for sale and not just what else the seller has for sale or what they will or will not accept. While I enjoy attractive listings, the interruption of a description for a non-related logo to pop up is a real put-off." "eBay is valid in their response to 'off-item' sales," Patti Bouwer said. "If a seller is only using eBay as an advertiser, it would seem they should need to pay for that advertising." Ultimately, however, the majority of respondents left little doubt they were not at all happy with eBay's decision. "eBay is now stepping way over the line," Don Slocum said. "When one company gets too big and tries to control the whole world market in every way, they are asking for resistance. Who do they think they are, Microsoft?" In response to some uncertainty about the new policy, eBay announced Tuesday it has clarified a portion of its link policy. eBay will now permit users to add clickable e-mail link from the View Item page of their auctions. Users can now link to organizations of which they are a member of such as the Better Business Bureau, OAUA or Squaretrade, but they cannot link to charity auctions from the View Item page. They can only link to charity auctions from their About Me page. eBay also said users may not link to other pages that they have developed from the View Item page, such as pages with information for new eBay Users; they cannot embed an image of a URL in their photos on the View Item page, but they can link to informational or help pages developed from their About Me page as well as link to multiple images of their item from the View Item page and a gallery of my eBay items from the View Item page. I tend to get all bunched up and annoyed sometimes...;) You win an auctionne...ebay sends you a winning notice...if a seller uses paypal, PAYPAL sends you a winning notice...encouraging you to pay for, and if necessary, sign up for paypal. The seller then sends an email with the final totals. To me, the paypal notice is unneeded. It does not have enough information to actually let you pay since it won't have shipping info and one usually waits for word form the seller anyway. Well, I got tired if reading through these dumb messages before realizing it wasn't the one I needed so I asked paypal to quit. They said, tell the seller, since they must turn on the feature. I told them it was a dumb feature and they should disable it, cause after I get the thing it's a little late to tell the seller I don't want it...;) Then I got annoyed at ebay since they must somehow be allowing paypal access to my email address since how else would they get it? My email address is hidden away from potential *stealers* of ebay's business, but free access is allowed to people like paypal to solicit their service??? All in all, the email address from paypal serves only to advertise their product and shouldn't be allowed to happen. What ya think? They only list one UR card. That card is listed as about 1 in 121 packs. Just slightly less than one in four boxes. Sounds like the ebay seller is attempting a con. They say you shouldn't give your password to others and to get this kind of service from paypal that is exactly what the sellers are doing. Paypal adds that nifty logo by altering the item description using their logon and password. I'm sure they are doing the same thing here... using the sellers id and password to log into the item after it has closed and 'suck out' your email address - which is available to the seller - and sending you the email. I don't think ebay is doing any favors to paypal... why would they, I think they'd wish paypal would go out of business so they could work more of the funds into their own business with bidpay. I think it would be better if paypal allowed the sellers to put in shipping payment terms too. This way they wouldn't need to send any emails out. Then, I could sign up for auto pay and we would never have to talk to anyone.... I think I'm going to talk to paypal about that... if a seller is signed up for paypal, why should I authorize payment... paypal could just automaticallly pay for me with no intervention at all ;) Just kidding, Robert ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Saturday, May 26, 2001 12:14 PM > I'm curious o hear your opinions on the below topic. Hmmmm.....gee, as an auctionne owner, I hate to set myself up here, but I disagree. Ebay went to all these lengths to *protect* me from other people getting my email address and stop exactly what is being done here. That email has no value other then solicitation of services. So, Ebay needs to patch this hole, too. Besides, there is no opt-out for buyers, that's inapporpriate. I don't have any paypal accounts anymore, partially cause I got so annoyed at their policies. and it clearly states they won't let me sign up again, so the email is extra useless to me. A set of cards will typically sell for less than if you sold the cards individually. That seems to go against logic. It is harder to put together a whole set than it is to get just a few cards. My guess is that is plays into the demand side of things. There are a greater number of people that have some cards and just need to complete a set, than there are people that have 0 cards and are looking to buy a complete set. Still, it always amazes/shocks me to see a set sell for less than the sum of individual cards. How many of us need a full set vs. how many need parts? Only dealers might be interested in full set, but only then to breakdown and resell as parts. :) I sold a collection and I wanted to break it up, the seller didn't, his argument being he'd be left with all the common sets, MY argument was he's get more out of the others to balance off not selling the commons......
