From: "Lynne Stewart" Subject: (TrekChat) Date: Fri, 5 Oct 2001 07:54:24 -0400 Date: 05 Oct 2001 05:48:41 -0600 I was reading the newsgroups and saw that a card dealer was going out of business :( It doesn't say why.... Of note, I would say things seem different....not for me sales-wise..as a dealer WofV was one of my strongest sales to date. Sometimes surprisingly so. But, it's so quiet....not as much chat, not as much....something..I dunno what..can't put my finger on it..makes it not as much fun without people to play with. I know I looooove my cards, I think I feel the same way as I always did, but I know I get sooo busy sometimes!!! How are ya'll feeling about your cards? Is it time for us to grow up and find a new thing to do with our time..consider that it's been, what, 5 years since the net brought us all together, more if we started before then, I've been card collecting for 10 years..if it's different where do you place the blame? Expensive inserts...the fact you've been left with holes and once you had a hole, you lost your enthusiasm? We've found new hobbies?? We're older and must put away our toys??? In my time, I've had collectors come and go, people I chatted with regularly fade away, new collectors take their place...me, I don't change :) I plod blindly onward..hehehee.....but I'm curious to know if things are changing.... Of course the numbers of ST chase cards/subsets increased over the years, and some of the inserts were made so rare that I could never afford to pick them (all) up. I think the turning point (for me at least) was First Contact. Nowadays I look to buy minimaster sets of the new releases (still don't have WOV), leaving the high end chase cards/subsets to others. Perversely though, I'm not a fan of factory sets. but it is sad that the genie is out of the bottle and that collecting ST cards is no longer affordable for the completist of modest means. ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- Reply-To: TrekChat@lists.xmission.com >I was reading the newsgroups and saw that a card dealer was going out of >business :( It doesn't say why.... >Of note, I would say things seem different....not for me sales-wise..as a >dealer WofV was one of my strongest sales to date. But I think another production factor is that there is just so much product being released (did we really need the "Profiles" sets?!). Cracking open a box is no longer a special event, and the cards no longer depict or chronicle unique or special ST memories previously absent from ST cards, filling holes in our larger ST collections. ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- Reply-To: TrekChat@lists.xmission.com >I used to buy boxes of ST cards when I knew I would get a couple of basic sets plus most of the chase cards. I noticed it changing a year ago, Just before the elections The economy started growing soft then. Venture capitol started drying up, Dot coms failed. Thousands upon thousands of people got laid off. Skybox lost the trek license. And now Rittenhouse attempts to re-invent a hobby in the middle of a recession. I don't see any new players join in the trek card hobby. And those that are left are just fading away like so many leaves on a tree in fall. There are too many inserts nowadays. I enjoyed card collection the most when there were only a hand full of holograms and a half dozen chase cards. Now it seems to be more of an investment hobby. I did a rough estimate on what Iv spent on just my autograph cards a few weeks ago and I Ga$ped! Im approaching 5 figures. :0 I agree with everything ben said too. I haven't been in the hobby for long, but I've notice a difference in the last series of cards. I personnaly hate these autograph cards - they are expensive and I don't see the point of collecting five Jeri Ryan cards for all my different sets. Usually, I simply don't buy the autographs cards. I just stuggle to get all the other cards from the set. Latelly, I got a box of TNG inaugural edition (I know, it's OLD ;) ). I admit to have more fun opening these older boxes than the newer ones because I know that, if I don't get the complete set with all the chase cards, I will be close to it. It is an expensive hobby. Maybe people grow out of it - get different interests - but I must admit that now, I'm calculating how much I will spent by set, not even to complete it, but to have a mini-master. And the figures scare me! But I think I'm going to stay for a while before giving up - after all I just love to open packs and see all these cards for the first time :) Isabelle To Unsubscribe from TrekChat send and put "unsubscribe trekchat" in the body without the quotes. -- Previous message archives are available via WWW at: or via FTP at: ftp.xmission.com --in-- /home/ftp/pub/lists/trekchat/archive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Arif Ansari" Subject: Re: (TrekChat) Date: Fri, 5 Oct 2001 07:54:24 -0400 Date: 07 Oct 2001 23:47:10 +0000 I think I know what you mean. I still collect and enjoy it. But to some extent it's more of a conveyor belt passtime, rather than fun. The better cards are epensive, they're churned out a high rate. All you need to do is have the money and point it in the right direction. I think there's less enthusiasm for sets being released because we've seen it all before. We just buy them because we collect, not because we say "wow, what a great card!" I agree with Jeff that it was more fun when there were just a few chase cards. Also it can be quite depressing seeing cards which you spent a lot of money on being virtually worthless. > From: "Lynne Stewart" > To: "Xmission. This is what happened: Someone was selling a TJ Hooker video on eBay. I bought it for about $30. When it arrived, it was just a domestic copy. I complained to the seller politely explaining the disappointment. He wrote back two messages to me being very abusive. And questioning why I was complaining about this on the day that "America is Striking Back". The second message had an attachment which I didn't open. Even so, I was unable to delete it, and when I closed down my e-mail programme, it told me a message had been renamed. It's never done that before. I then went back into the programme and the message had disappeared. I've run a virus sweep using GuardDog but there's no sign of a virus. And so far no obvious problem. Do you think I'm getting paranoid or is there something going on here? And don't say anything about TJ Hooker! They will probably be rare and therefore expensive for the completists out there. How many collectors were actually impressed that the previous thread/costume cards came from set-worn uniforms? Did they collect the card because the cloth was used in production? Because it might possibly include the DNA of the actor? I think not. They are novel, and rare, but have no higher intrinsic value to me than any other super-rare card. I agree that the price we pay is what they are worth to us, but it is still always better to not have to pay as much... because we can get more that way ;) What annoys me is that sometimes I buy boxes and feel like I did alright doing that, and sometimes I feel like I shouldn't have... I would have been better of buying individual cards. But, then I think the odds of a box netting you something are better now then in the early 90's, that's for sure! Anyone wanna comment on the newsgroup discussion of Rittenhouse temporarily suspending web promo cards related to the mail issues of late. I was gonna post but didn't cause it always looks like I take RA's side, but I thought it was TERRIBLY funny that there are little, if any, posts on the terrorist attacks (A position I understand fully, we need our escapes), but suddenly everyone gets all patriotic when it affects their cards and there's more posts on that topic then there was on the first one tehehehehe...
