No, I don't think it could. People have paid much more than a thousand dollars for the Tapestry Picard. Other ltd editions - such as the POTA dolls - also fetch a high price. These other ltd edition figurines are only a par with what is already being sold. In many cases the prices are substantially cheaper. Just one comparison - Kevin Francis Borg Toby Jug: Ltd to 350. I was sort of shocked by the announcement of the ultra-rare limited to 200 7 card mirror back set. I wasn't able to appreciate over the phone what the card is or does, but the basic jist was a card that transfers the character from their Mirror Character to their regular character, though not like the lenticular set of Phase II. He said one of the main reasons for making the card so limited was the cost. The card is more expensive then the basic autograph card (taking into acount what they pay the actor and all) and he feels is their best card to date. I am expecting some images of it next week, though I was told an image wouldn't do it justice, whichI can understand. They are aware of the collector's desire for completionism, but I suppose they won't be able to make everyone happy with whateverthey do, so they just do what suits, though I could have wished for more then 200 happy people. Even Playmates limited to 170!!! THheir take is they want ultra rare coveted cards and seem to feel limiting this set to 200 will do that. I would be curious to know what the value of these cards will be compared next to a Brent Spiner auto...I mean, I am NUTS, I admit, but if we see the Spiner auto at $700 a pop, then what?? $700x7?????? Nooooooo way!!! I added to the auto list on the page. It is 32 autos, I was trying to write as he spoke (and have a contest on what episode went with what character, which I failed miserably, btw. heeheehee) and couldn't decipher my scribble scrabble, but will type the rest up after the press release gets here. A promo card has been produced and isn't yet released (though there is one on ebay!!! Kinda surprised Skybox) It will be in NSU, as will an article about the set and some ads, so more to come, I am sure. See the web site for more details on the short runs. Basically, I didn't get any hard numbers, but I get the ipression it will be less clear cut...DeForest and Shatner will be short runs...Barret will be more then Season One, but not as many as some of the more common autos. Terru Garr will be 'plentiful'. I got the impression it was not a short run, but not quite a common....... TNG Season VII and Movie IX combined for Nov. some autos and a Voyager set with some autos, then POW! in 1999 a TNG extravaganza, as it was put...;) Season III Nimoy and DeForest(again) Today I am discouraged a bit, but maybe tomorrow will look brighter?? My simple motto is, I wanna have fun and by dippie, I will, regardless! He said one of the main reasons for making the card so limited was the cost. *this I can see....the industry is faultering.....companys are failing and skybox starts using new VERY costly technology....hey...did ya ask them.....why? I mean are they just a bunch of______or a bunch of_____ (fill in what ya like)......be aware they are a company..they work in fiscal quarters...they spread developement and R&D costs.... (let me ask....how many people...today months later...set complete but for one card..... are still picking up packs of FC or DSN profiles????)so try season I....great balls of fire! look at the feeding frenzy.....whew glad they limited the number of boxes... so season 2 will have more autos...and hey lets stick in the the most ultra rare thing we got on the design borads...what?! it is for a some other set??? well......show me the money........Skybox is full of themselves... how many people that do trek did not do the season one set.... I would be curious to know what the value of these cards will be compared next to a Brent Spiner auto...I mean, I am NUTS, I admit, but if we see the Spiner auto at $700 a pop, then what?? $700x7?????? Nooooooo way!!! *sigh....you say that now....we all do... :) *(again)sigh.....looks like season 7 will be my last complete set.... I refuse to get involved in this crap. ....gosh look how they bought all the season one boxes...in record time.....I bet all the season two boxes will be presold before the ship date..... and let me ask ya...you guys that bought cases....going to do it again? and now with 32 autos...and 7 super rares...going to buy even more? and wow......that will leave season 3.........I wonder if we could have something even more complicated and difficult to collect... so there will be 200 possible sets of the season two rares... I hope I get one single......I am sure someone will trade me for something I have been looking for for a long time...and of course with all those retail outlets for kids to collect these low priced packs...(I mean wasn't it neat season one boxes everywhere!) we see skybox is trying to keep the industry alive and bring in new collectors and keeping the old ones happy....so I get two-three boxes of season two...and then season 3...try to complete the B and C and P cards.....get a couple of autos....be happy...get season 7 from TNG and I am gonna just drop trek cards as a collectible....I can spend the money (and yes...not feel like a sucker) else where....complete my sets....maybe start on some older...maybe just stick with topps and Star wars....again...pity. I could stick with just the ST figures.. I dropped collecting SW figures because kenner releases short packed figures and some just did not look good....So I will do SW cards and ST figures.... Today I am discouraged a bit, but maybe tomorrow will look brighter?? good luck lynne....and everyone else....I am totally dissapointed with skybox......(they lost my support when they did not make a season 6 binder).... I don't know if it lack of thought or just being very outof touch with the customer base. I mean, look at this, I have an auctionne, it has EASILY 200 peope on it. In just the Internet and in just the people seeing and bidding in my auctionne, there are more people then the ultrarare cards. I have casual contact with more then 200 Trek people that will want this card and this is such a teeny tiny part of the trek population. I think iti is poosible to maintian a rare card without having it that rare....What is the Future Enterprise.....it is considered an ultrarare, but most people can get it and still treasure it as rare. What Curtis is saying is his source is rising their prices, therefore he has to rise prices. As a dealer, the prices i can offer NOW are not stationary. Skybox sold out the day after the release of this product. If I as a delaer go looking for boxes now, I am pretty much at the mercy of what i can get from the secondary market and that price would be pased onto my customers. For the most part, I tell my customers to go looking themselves, cause by the time I fond them, buy them and resell them, the price is too high, so take out the middleman and get them yourselves!!! > IF U KNOW U CAN OPEN A BOX AND GET AN AUTOGRAPH IN IT.. > WHY WOULD U KEEP THE BOX SEALED? > UNLESS OF COURSE UR PLAYING THE ODDS THAT U WONT FIND > ONE WORTH OVER $100... LIKE A SHATNER OR COLLINS OR > RICARDO. OR DOOHAN.. ETC.. This is agree with, paying $100 for a box is pretty risky. Odds aer you will get stuck with a auto woth $40 and the other inserts arn't gonna make up the difference. Exactly. The price I pay now (the current best "wholesale" price I can find) is HIGHER than the retail price I paid when I bought my personal boxes when the set came out. Therefore, the end user price is higher also. Lynne also wrote: >paying $100 for a box is pretty risky. Odds aer you >will get stuck with a auto woth $40 and the other inserts arn't gonna >make up the difference. This may be true from a dollar-value standpoint, given what you can buy the most of the autograph cards for. Ultimately, however, the price that you can put on a box is limited only by what people will *pay* for it, which common sense would tell you should be pretty close to the approximate sum of the values of the individual cards within the box. However (again), if you intend to KEEP the cards, and don't intend to ever sell or trade them, then their retail value according to the price guides is totally irrelevant; the question is, how much do you want the cards? (For example, I'd pay $50 for my favorite CD if I had to, even though I know its retail value is only $15, because that's what it's worth to ME.) My experience with this set has been that the saleable price is perhaps even a bit higher, for these reasons: -- The only way left to complete these sets without buying a box is to buy them put together already, which isn't as much fun. -- There's a small possibility that they'll get an ultra-rare or maybe even more than one autograph. (With a 1:30 autograph ratio, there's about a 20% chance of finding TWO autographs in a box.) By the way, my original message on this subject was intended as a personal reply, which I sent to the list accidentally. (oops.) C. If one is lucky though there are real deals to be made over the web. Right now I am collecting CREED comics and would like to obtain the card set which is in the nearest comic store for over 20 dollars. Its almost certain that if I find it on the internet it will be no more that $12. One way I have found to make searchs is to click REFINE and out of a previous search that obtained 200,000 hits you narrow to 100-200 especially if you save the most important part of your description for that last step. Add the following to the definitions section: CCG - Collectable Card Game AU - Alternate Universe QC - Q Continuuem DSN is also seen as DS9 TNG is also seen as STNG Spell out the movie titles LLAP (in case they ever deal with Vince) Spell out the movie titles, >WAX PACK: These are called wax packs because they are packed in paper (or a soft plastic) and sealed with hot wax. There are usually 12 or 15 cards in a pack Wax packs can be searched and resealed, so be careful. Would add something about the soft plastic packs are not resealable like the wax packs are making them non-searchable unless the plastic is see through. Also might want to mention that wax packs are no longer seen in non-sport stuff (or are they???) and that plastic are usually only seen in the Collectable Game Cards. > FOIL PACK: These packs are made from foil to insure "tamper resistance". There is no wax seal, but basically just a fusion of the foil. Typically, there are 12 or 15 cards in foil packs I would update (or downdate) this to say 8 - 12 cards in a pack. Another reason foil is better than wax/plastic packs is because cards like holo's could be searched out in the non-foil packs with a metal detector. A friend of mine even used a wall stud finder to search individual packs of the old 25th Anniversary set. Worked on density and a pack with a metalic hologram would set it off. >WAX BOX, FOIL BOX CELLO BOX, JUMBO BOX: Just the box that contains the packs. For foil and wax boxes, there are usually 36 packs (although a couple of companies put 24 packs in a box) For Cello/Jumbo boxes, there are usually 24 packs per box. A sealed or unopened box means that the box has never been opened and thus not searched. 48 packs has been used a few times also. >WAX/FOIL/CELLO/JUMBO CASE: Generally there are 10, 12, 20 or 24 boxes in a factory case. These are called sealed or unopened cases. Fleer/Skybox's standards are 6, 12, 20 and a couple times I've seen 30. >CARD SHOW PROMO: These are cards handed out to attract people to come to card shows. Usually, the promo has on the back the card show's promoter's address and phone number. The quality is usually substandard. In non-sport these are very valuable many times because of limited production and distribution. Only those going to the show can get them. -J!m mailto:encore@xmission.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: J!m Hepworth Subject: Re: (trekchat) Card Collecting primer Date: 16 Mar 1998 12:28:27 -0700 At 12:09 PM 3/16/98 , you wrote: >LLAP (in case they ever deal with Vince) OH! Mint (M or Mnt) - NO creases, NO dings, NO dents, NO scratches, NO marks in gloss/UV coating, all four corners sharp and square, picture centered on card. Near Mint (NM or NrMnt) - Excellent (EX) or Fine (F) Good (G) Poor (P) ======================== And another nice addition would be a listing of all available price guides for them to use and what they each cover and possibly subscription info for them. Tuff Stuff's Collect! - Price guide for Non-Sport and Gaming (CCG) cards. The episode cards list the episode number, but in the last batch, there was a DS9 episode card and a Voyager card with the production number instead. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of quality assurance checking before they go out the door. Anyone else notice that the newer cards seem thinner? There are over 500 episodes at this moment in time, with DS9 and Voyager still airing new shows. In each set of 10 cards, less than half are episode cards, which implies more than 1000 cards total. Atlas (Newfield) has started to produce cards with movie images also. My binder is nearly half full with my 160 cards. I'm wondering if I should start another set just to get another binder. I haven't seen anything that mentions how many "cards" there are going to be in this set. Heck they'll probably just keep producing them as long as we all keep buying them. Looks like we all started about the same time as I have 160 also. I received the "Film Synopsis" divider with my last shipment of cards. For the price we're paying for these I would assume if you stay with the program that they would send you a new binder when necessary. If not I'd just call and complain until they did. I haven't noticed the cards getting thinner but then I haven't gone through every pack yet since I'm reading each as I insert it and don't always have enough time. Still have the last shipment of 3 packs and 1 pack from the previous to go through. Just wondering, how are you guys organizing yours? For how many cards there are going to be I would sure like a few sets of series dividers so I could sub-sort each category by series. -J!m mailto:encore@xmission.com To Unsubscribe from TrekChat send and put "unsubscribe trekchat" in the body without the quotes. -- Previous message archives are available via WWW at: or via FTP at: ftp.xmission.com --in-- /home/ftp/pub/lists/trekchat/archive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Robert Elden Wilson Subject: RE: (TrekChat) From the "Well it seemed like a good idea at t Date: 23 Mar 1998 20:01:45 -0500 Archive and Unsubscribe information can be found at the bottom of this message. -- -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- On Monday, March 23, 1998 7:49 PM, J!m Hepworth [SMTP:encore@xmission.com] wrote: > Boy, what a bunch of suckers... unfortunately that description > includes me > too. That's exactly how I've been doing them with the exception of a strong desire to place the crew cards in order of rank instead of alphabetically. After looking at each category I think I'd be happy with a minimum of two sets of series dividers. I'd use one in the Episodes and one in the Crew sections. I'd also probably like to do the Characters section by series. The other categories are general enough or cover multiple series so that I'll probably end up just doing them alphabetically. -J!m mailto:encore@xmission.com To Unsubscribe from TrekChat send and put "unsubscribe trekchat" in the body without the quotes. -- Previous message archives are available via WWW at: or via FTP at: ftp.xmission.com --in-- /home/ftp/pub/lists/trekchat/archive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Kirk and Jen Murray" Subject: Re: Re:(TrekChat) From the "Well it seemed like a good idea at t Date: 23 Mar 1998 21:07:47 -0500 Archive and Unsubscribe information can be found at the bottom of this message. -- I thought that the cards were thinner as well. My My well what do we have here. A half full binder and now i find there may be no end to this series. I don't think i will live long enough to complete this set. maybe my grandchildren will. I should have figured it out after 1 1/2 years getting the civil war cards with no end in sight. I just quit. I have mine sorted by episodes, races, ships, technology etc I do find a lot of information that I never knew about in the cards. Somebody at atlas or newfield has gone through a lot of research to collect the information. I do find the print easier to read than the little trading cards. Some times with the little cards i have to get my magnifying glass. On another note --- where can i go to discuss Babylon 5 cards. It seems that season 4 is about as bad as the TOS. Bought 2 boxes and can't even get one set completed not counting the chase cards. Just wasting away in Cardville. The major thing that bothers me is the amount of money that it will eventualy cost to compleate it. They sent me another binder last week. just when the first one was about half full. I havent opened it yet. It's still layin by the front door. I imagin i am at the same level as Bob and the rest of you who have recieved the cecond album.. In no particular order i have sorted them TOS,TNG,DS9,Voyager. Untill theres more cards to sort i woulnt want to spend the time to sort them. Not only is it a Money sucker. It's a Time sucker too. It just hit me. This reminds me of my stamp collectiong days from PCS. (Postal Commeritive Socity)I spent over $5000 on that shit and ended up selling it for $125 Cus there's was absoluty no interest in a secondary market for them. What a wast of time and money that was. Thats it i,m quiting these newfield cards right now. Who wants to buy what i have recieved from them so far? at Cost??? WHAT? NOONE?? Second, I do have a request or suggestion. I don't want to pressure anyone who enjoys certain privacies on the 'net (like last name, address, etc.), but it would be nice if everyone could include their email address at the end of their messages. I ask this for many reasons: because sometimes it is nice to respond privately to someone who has posted here, to follow the posted "conversations" better, and also because my lame email system doesn't show who posted the message, just "TrekChat@lists.xmission.com". I feel like charlie > brown. It's not that bad. After your first three single pack shipments they start sending 3-pack shipments. This saves on the postage. Here's an overview of what you get for those who may be interested. Cards are 8" x 10" (really more like pages) and are three hole punched to fit the binder. All 16 coasters are different and very nice. Sampler - Free* (+ .99 cents S/H) Includes 30 cards and 4 ship coasters + entry into contest for 10 autographed cards. Free S/H if you order the Intro kit Intro Kit (Shipment #1) FREE: 10 cards, 12 coasters, Binder w/dividers & manual $7.88: 10 cards w/S&H So up to this point you have 50 cards, 16 coasters, Binder for $7.88. Shipment #2 - 10 cards - $7.88 Shipment #3 - 10 cards - $7.88 Shipment #4 - #31 - 30 cards - $19.96/ea = $558.88 That makes exactly 1000 cards for a total of $582.52 With them adding the new category for Film Synopsis and new DS9 and Voyager episodes still coming out they could easily add more cards. How many? Probably as many as they can get us to keep buying. I have the Alexander (S35) card for trade if your interested, Chris, the only thing is it was one of two cards I found im my boxes that had been dented. It is hardly dented at all though and the dent was from something that left an impression which was the size of a thin coathanger pressing on the edge. It is noticable only on close inspection. S32 is Painstik which of a Klingon leader being assainated. There are a couple of sites that I have bookmarked that sell it. I can give you the URL's if you want. And I have the HG12 of Q which I am asking 70 dollars for including shipping. The mail order place I bought the cards from has put an ad in their flyer selling my extra set of HG11 & 12 for 139.95 (Rainbow Cards--is their outfit). The H12 hologram is worth 90 dollars and I have a deal with Rainbow cards for them to buy back the entire contents of the 12 boxes which I purchased for $788 dollars. Seperately, before I received the boxes from Rainbow I bought an H12 card for $135 dollars from http://www.open.org/curtis/trekcard/treklink.htm Let me think about what I am going to do, I am sorry if you were counting on the card. For some reason it is very hard to find web sites selling the Season Six cards lately, and I may try to sell my cards on my own web page soon. Rainbow is still selling the cards, they are on the web. They can be expensive though, but they have a good selection.
