Hopefully the first or second would free up enough that I wouldn't have to go any further. I'd choose this way so I could keep as many customers happy as possible making sure everyone who wanted a box got one. 1. I'd start by cancelling all orders that had not sent in their down-payment if one was required to hold their order. 2. If anyone had ordered two or more cases I'd reduce their order by a case. 3. Pro-rate all multi-box orders down by an equal % until I freed up enough boxes. 25% reduction example: 20box order gets 15, 10 box order gets 7 or 8, 4 box order gets 3. 4. I had fun collecting first editions and such back in the early 80's. I doubt I would find them a home now, but then I don't want to so, it's ok! AS to collecting for value or fun. Surely, anyone who is collecting is interested in knowing their collection has monetary value, esp since we put money INTO it. I would continue to collect regardless, but I like to sit down and read the guides, crowing if an item I picked up goes up, sulking if I paid too much. What harm is that? THough, it pays not to be too caught up in guides. I always worry that the few recent books are put out by people with stores who seem to have too much at stake in inflating prices, thereby justifying their prices on items. I've learned that repeat customers are one of the businessperson's greatest resources. This plan, while theoretically fair to all customers, also negatively affects the greatest number of customers, and this may affect repeat business. Here's another idea to consider: 1. Cancel un-prepaid orders first (I'm totally with you on that one). 2. If necessary, cancel the last orders placed until equilibrium is reached. While this may not seem as fair to those who miss out, it follows the basic rules of "first in time, first in right", "finders keepers, losers weepers", "the early bird gets the worm", "you snooze, you lose", etc. Yet another idea off the top of my head: after cancelling un-prepaid orders, cancel first-time customers? While this might make business sense in some people's opinion, it isn't very fair at all, in my opinion. Any thoughts on either of these? C. True, it "could" affect the greatest number of people, but only if my allocation was cut by a huge percentage or I had no multi-case orders. I would expect the first two steps would probably free up enough boxes making this method affect way fewer people. For example, allotment of 3 cases, first order in for 2 cases and then 20 orders for single boxes come in. Allotment then cut to 2 cases. If I followed the 'first come first serve" method I would have 20 upset customers to deal with. If I just lower the first guy to 1 case I may have 1 irate customer (but he'll probably understand) and 20 happy ones. >Here's another idea to consider: >1. Cancel un-prepaid orders first (I'm totally with you on that one). >2. And you have the dilemma of how to decide who was first... The guy who placed the order first? Who had their down-payment in first? Who full-paid first? With this being a pre-order my own preference is to spread the boxes to as many people as possible. If this was a live product I had in stock then I'd probably do the first come first served. >Yet another idea off the top of my head: after cancelling un-prepaid >orders, cancel first-time customers? While this might make business sense >in some people's opinion, it isn't very fair at all, in my opinion. I'd wouldn't cancel first-time orders as I agree it isn't fair. But since I think previous customers are very important, and I knew this was a numbered product and was going to be a sell-out, I posted my pre-sale offer to must my previous customers (buyers & traders) first. I gave them one week and then I would have opened it up to others, but my allocation was gone in just a couple days so I never did open it up others. -J!m mailto:encore@xmission.com To Unsubscribe from TrekChat send and put "unsubscribe trekchat" in the body without the quotes. -- Previous message archives are available via WWW at: or via FTP at: ftp.xmission.com --in-- /home/ftp/pub/lists/trekchat/archive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Lynne Stewart Subject: (TrekChat) (no subject) Date: 05 May 1998 11:14:34 -0400 Archive and Unsubscribe information can be found at the bottom of this message. -- > >1. THe biggest issue, I think, is one problem can cause customers to go away and never come back for reasons I as a dealer can't control. MAddening. As tothe strategies listed above, all have downsides as pointed out. I was tempted totake the percentage idea....cut everyone in the same percentage I was, but the idea of all thise bummed customers...ouch. There is also the option of purchasing boxes whatever the cost and honor the preorder agreement. I mean, I expect them to honor their agreement or no deposit is returned, yes, have they not the right to expect the same from me? So, do I buy boxes at $65 a box and sell them at $54 and eat the loss for happy customers...course, it won';t do me as a dealer much good, since I likely wouldnt be arind to reao the benefits of their loyalty...;) SInce i would tehn be in the poor house..>:snicker: Canceling single orders would bother me the most. I have a soft spot for people who can't afford 'big purchases' Anyone buying one box is likely someone who loves collecting, but can't afford it as easily and likely will treasure that one box the most and is LESS likely to be able to afford to rush out and find it on the secondaty market. (no offense to the case buyers out there!!!!) Canceling first time buyers is a bummer from the sense of expanding your business a bit, bringing in fresh blood so to speak.... What's amazing to me is if I had taken no preorders, I could have sold my allotment for a good chunk of change now, the place O got my extra cases last month is now charging $12 MORE wholesale...wowowowowow! Tha'ts ok, I'll live!!! I'll keep trying to make my fortune in nursing......:snicker: I am using my personal boxes to fill my orders, so all is well for the customers, but, if I don't pull a short run in what boxes I DO get to keep, I intend to be verrrry cranky...;) And if anyone gets a V card, PLEASE don't tell me....!!!!! Because the members of this list use a variety of mail readers all messages should be posted in simple ascii text with no formatting (color/font changes). Not posting simple ascii text means your message won't be able to be read by everyone meaning possible missed sale/trade opportunities. Outlook Express and Outlook98 are the two biggest culprits. People who use Outlook probably don't realize that their messages are only viewed properly by others who use Outlook also. The rest of us get funny characters, no hard returns or other strange display problems. This is caused by the way Outlook encodes the messages. Here is the way I see it: The limited availability of Season One and the autograph in every box was wildly successful in that Skybox sold out very quickly and created a lot of excitement in the Star Trek card collecting world. Dealers were also happy with lots of expensive autograph cards to sell at high prices. But how long can collectors keep up with sets that cost $2-3,000 to complete? The high prices and short supply have undoubtedly brought many greedy dealers into the field in addition to the regular Star Trek dealers. I would guess Skybox has many orders from dealers who do not usually care about Star Trek, but now think they can make a killing by buying cases and then selling boxes for ridiculous prices. $85? $100? $125? But I think they will fail - sure, there are some people who have paid such prices for Season One boxes and will pay it for Season Two boxes. But I think there are not a lot of such people and dealers who think collectors will stand in line to pay those prices will be surprised. Meanwhile, the loyal collectors cannot find good dealers who have anything left to sell at a reasonable price, and good dealers like Lynne are getting squeezed. I have been a very loyal Trek card collector. I have every Skybox Trek card that I know of, including the Data First Contact autograph card. I have almost every non-Skybox Trek card that I know of. I completed TOS:Season One and was lucky enough to get an "I" card, so I did not have to spend outrageously to complete it. Nonetheless, it is obvious that my days as a completist are numbered, with Season Two adding the 7 untra rare cards, and Season Three and Voyager with an autograph in every box also due before the end of the year. Sorry if I sound bitter. Collecting these cards has been a lot of fun, but I have watched greed ruin Playmates' Trek action figure line and I hate to see the same thing happen to the cards. Collecting is getting to be less fun as sets cost thousands to complete, and each set gets more expensive then the preceding set. Now we are at a point where even people who can afford the prices still can't get the boxes. I think this is out of control and will backfire as increasing numbers of collectors get discouraged. Just got the news that Skybox has cut everyone's allotment. I barely survived my overselling on the product, only to then be told THEY oversold and won't be sending me anywhere near what I need. From what i understand, all dealers and distributors are affected by this. Should be interesting to see how it all gets handled. I remember when Playmates dealers went through the pain of being hurt by Playmates changing or canceling allotments....now I know how it feels. As a customer, tell me your expectations of a dealer, hurt by things out of their control? What do you expect to be done here> I have already decided my course of action (besides my first choice of suicide), but I won't tell so I don't disrupt the flow of opinions. I feel for ya Lynne... anyone getting two or more boxes gets cut one box.... stop and see how that fits in to your allotment. If we are talking cases here...wow...umm...what can ya do...I don't think people getting one box should be cut out. But I know people are counting on volume due to the idiotic autograph thing....(TOS one is the set where I am no longer considering myself a completist) so.....well....first split cases everyone ordering half/full cases or more gets ut in half....I mean if the cards are not there...they just ain't there...any chance you know someone not using thier whole allotments? good luck.... If I just lower the >first guy to 1 case I may have 1 irate customer (but he'll probably >understand) and 20 happy ones. Good point! One more idea: I know of one dealer who ordered a couple of extra cases, but didn't consider those in their pre-sale calculations. In other words, when he sold all but two cases, he was "sold out". This way an allottment cancellation would have no impact on his customers, as long as his reserve is big enough. This might not work with every new product, because you wouldn't want to get stuck with boxes you can't sell, but with the TOS boxes (and even Trek boxes in general), it wouldn't take long to sell another couple of cases. I would suspect they chose to do him cause there was such an advertising blitz for that series...New Frontiers was the one they did the Waldenbooks pass for and posters......supposedly the start of a new 'group' of characters..a new trek universe. DS9 looks like a go for one more season and Voyager is year to year. Paramont does want to keep two diverse style programs on the air. Why not replace a "Space Station" based Star Trek with the first Earth Based series. Allow Voyager to get home and save the alpha quadrant. Bring in another load of late teen early twenties actors to keep the younger audiences getting hooked so they can become the older wiser more mature money spending audiences, say like my age group. "snicker". It would be very "Logical"!!!! You have to look at the B I G picture sometimes. This is a good explaination of the Starfleet Academy figures and books already out and the New Frontier books and figures being released. I fail to understand, since they knew how much product they were going to make, that they can overpromise to such a degree. I'd rather they alloted me 2 cases, then later, say, oj, we ended up having more, want some more? In the end, I as the end dealer am the loser. Skybox gets the same money, I scranble around trying to do right. Admittedly, they tried to 'make up for it' They are giving me original pricing (if I ordered a 20 box, but they send a 12 box, I get a 20 box price) and the same number of dealer incentives as my original order...... Enough whinning.....as for not selling as much as I have an allotment for, true, that has it's good sides, but it's scarey for someone like me who is small and not alot of cash flow, I pretty much only order what I have orders for to guarantee I sell.I can't afford to have too much tied up in the shelves.Even knowing more then likely it would sell down the line, it's still a financial drain and once again. I feel the concept of allotments si to guarantee I know what i will have and can make plans, it should be something I can rely on. MArk brings up issue we discussed with TOS one and need to be addressed again. Having gotten over my self-pity, this set has and will be the trend of the future, we have crossed a line not likely to be crossed back over. Card sets will lie unfinished, not everyone who wants one will get the cards they desire...those with the $$$ will won out, there is reason to be discouraged. I am sure with the porr showing of the last few Season sets from Skybox, they were against the wall, amke a winner or else, and by sippy they made a winner. At least as far asl sales goes, whhether some get trampled is a mote point, (I say this from the perspective of the bean counters) and they are content. People are coming out of the woodwork to order this set. Sold out prior tothe release date.....having to turn away $$$$$....wow....we likely will have no say in where this series of cards goes, what we will need to decide is what we do with the situation, I won't say it again cause I said it last time, find a way to make yourself happy and still pay your bills. I doubt there will be many who can claim a complete set, more will not, but it's still gotta be possible to enjoy it??? One last thing, I opened (mumble) boxes, I pulled no short runs or I card. one of my customers at the tail end of my preorders for Season I ordered ONE box, one. See pulled an I card and is now the proud owenr of a complete set. MAy it happen again to another deserving soul. Mark M posts a message saying the overuse of rare and scarce is getting on his nerves and sets forth HIS definition of the words which I suppose he expects we will adopt and then the same days posts a list of the items he has to sell that are rare and scarce. It reminds me of the recent price guide put out by Mike Kott and Cromwell, from Intergalactic Trading CO. In both of these situations, the ones telling up the info and pricing for the guides are the same ones SELLING, therefore can they be objective about their information? Seems they have a vested interest that makes their opinions suspect( as would mine be by the same token since i sell) I agree with Mark, btw, I don't allow the above words to be used in the auctionne, I'll delete them from the description. I think an item will rise and fall on it's own merits and for the most part we aren't stupid and we know. Give me stats, sure..limited to 200, fine, add that, but don't tell me that an item that there are TONS of is RARE. But I've learned to ignore them just as I do all the other false advertising I see. People always want to make their product look the best so they'll always show it in the best light. Thier is always some sort of "truth" they can use to back up their falsehoods. For example, you could say any chase card was "rare" if you compared it to how many common cards there were. But if you take how many chase were produced and compare it how many buyers there are it's probably an overproduced card. It's all perspective, I may have been looking for some card that people have posted for $5 but I missed their messages. Then I see some guy post it for $10 and I buy it thinking it's hard to find because I haven't seen it listed anywhere else. I've bought from Mark M a couple times. You have to be careful though as alot of his prices are very inflated in my opinion. Take a box of Morris Stickers. When I bought them he had them for $200/box. I was considering buying another box a week later but when I called him he had raised the price to $400/box. Seems he'd had more inquiries on it lately so he raised the price because it was a very "scarce" product. No way was I going to pay double what I had just paid a week previously because he deemed they were scarce all of the sudden because of a few inquires. -J!m mailto:encore@xmission.com To Unsubscribe from TrekChat send and put "unsubscribe trekchat" in the body without the quotes. -- Previous message archives are available via WWW at: or via FTP at: ftp.xmission.com --in-- /home/ftp/pub/lists/trekchat/archive ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Lynne Stewart Subject: (TrekChat) V card Date: 26 May 1998 10:32:23 -0400 Archive and Unsubscribe information can be found at the bottom of this message. -- My scanner is brok and about to KILL me arrrr... (Yeah, I'm calling F/SB on it) A perfect breakdown of letter cards in a box would be 3 sets (not counting the "V") + 3 extra cards so the 3 of each letter Mark got in one of his boxes is just right. I don't suppose you have their number? 1-800-424-6735 I know some may say I am just following the 'dealer/party line', but I do believe they made an effort to make SURE there was an auto in every box. TOS I was really bad in that dept andI am sure they don't wanna go through that again!. At least half of my boxes has two autos, one had three, one had FOUR!!! TO accomplish this, though, I imagine they reallly increased the number of autos inserted into boxes. This will have certain aftereffects, I think. I anticipate there are LOTS more autos floating aruond when compared to TOS I. The commons should settle down quite nicely to a reasonable price and maybe people will get to finish the auto set. As to the mirrors......I had thought I would try to get a good chunk of the set. Having more autos then I expected to have, I thought they would make good fodder either in cash or trade for a mirror, but WOWOWOW, the cost these babies are getting. Amazing! He apparently also signed in GRENN :ewww: but he doesn't think any of those got out, since the ink smudged. The autograph insertion ratio was alot higher then TOS I. He said in a case you should expect to get 25-26 autos in a case. I suspect it's a bit higher then that at least it seemed like it. Voyager Profiles: Not a Season III set. A valid supposition, but from my point of view (as one who got no autographs), it seems more likely that the phenomenon of multiple-autograph boxes is the result of bad distribution; if my theory is right, for every 2-autograph box, there should be one autograph-free box out there somewhere. The odds of getting an autograph may very well have been 1:36 over the entire run, but with an abundance of reports of 0, 2 (over half of Lynne's boxes?!!), 3, and 4 autographs per box, it makes me wonder. I must sound like I'm really harping on this, but if TOS1 is any indication, the autograph is about 80% of the value of the box, even if it's one of the cheaper autographs. Given that fact, it seems like Skybox REALLY messed this one up, regardless of their good intentions (which I don't question). C. I didn't get any, and a few of my >custoemrs have said the same thing?/?!! I got one, but I'm not surprised if a lot of others didn't. Earlier I reported that neither of my two boxes had autographs. After hearing about everyone else's troubles with non-autograph cards also, I decided to check some of my other subsets. I found that after combining all my basic set cards from both boxes, I had only one of one basic card, which means that at least one box didn't have the guaranteed basic set. (I wish I had done this before I combined the basic cards from both boxes, because there were several cards of which I got only two from both boxes, suggesting that neither box may have had a complete basic set.) Also, unlike TOS1 (when I got 3 complete base sets and 2 complete sets of Character Log cards from two boxes), from 2 boxes of TOS2 I barely got one full base set, and was 15 cards short of even one Character Log set. Very poor distribution. One other interesting tidbit--in one of my boxes, about every other pack had two identical back-to-back Character Log cards. Anyway, at the very least, Skybox is legally obligated to send me two autographed cards and one single common card (to fill my base set hole) to fulfill their guarantee of one autograph and one base set in each box. However, given the facts of their failure to meet their guarantees, plus other examples of poor distribution, plus the fact that one of my plaque cards was DAMAGED, I'm going to take Lynne's advice and lobby Skybox for (1) autograph card, and (1) unopened box (which would HOPEFULLY have an autograph in it). I suspect Lynne is right about the likelihood of getting a free box from them--they might not have any more boxes to give, since they're sold out, but my understanding is that it's pretty much standard procedure to assert "sold out" status when 90-95% of product is sold, so that they have a buffer for situations such as mine. (There may be enough dissatisfied customers that even these are gone, though.) If they say they can't send another box due to being sold out, I'll tell them that a free box of TOS3 would be acceptable. (Yeah, right. And monkeys might fly out my butt.) I hate to be a whiner, but this just isn't acceptable. I tried to call Skybox Friday, but since I called after 2:30 pm Pacific, they were closed. I'm calling again 1st thing Monday AM. Thanks to Lynne and Bob Wilson for providing "800" numbers for Skybox. C. Graf Review by Kirk Bryan Tell us a tale, and pass me an ale, Cap'. Such is the theme of a new series of Star Trek books, where the various Trek captains take a seat at the table and tell you a story in "their own words." The first novel in the series "stars" Captain James Kirk of the Enterprise and Captain Hikaru Sulu, the one time helmsman turned captain of the Excelsior. During a break on Mars, the two Captains have a drink at the mysterious "Captains Table" bar where they interchangeably weave a story about their adventures which, while initially divergent, slowly form one story told from separate ends. The bar theme, which was initially interesting, seems mostly useless, and the scenes cutting from the story back to the bar are distracting instead of diverting. The story itself was a decent, if uninspiring, take on the "find the secret behind the new alien species" plot which we see several times each year on television. The portrayal of James Kirk seemed out of character at times, and at certain points in the novel I was shaking my head in disbelief at Kirk's actions. But the book picked up steam on Sulu's Excelsior. It was intriguing to see Sulu captain his own ship with Chekov as First Officer. The always underused Sulu has an interesting story to tell and the novel leaves you wanting to hear more.
