If I were going to watch Sliders or TekWar, I wouldn't need to see 20 commercials a week for the same episode to decide. (Not an exaggeration.) I noticed that there were a lot of promo-type commercials for other Sci-Fi shows; I wonder if that means they've had a hard time selling commercial time to paying advertisers? (That could be bad for those of us who want to tape the whole series. Deja vu--they might cancel it after 2 seasons! Probably not though--I imagine they taped the interviews for all 79 episodes in about a month's time, and all the episodes are already edited together.) C. I'm taping them (even though I already have 2/3 of them taped, but just the low-Q syndicated version). I edit out the commercials while recording, and one commercial break on Wednesday was so long that my VCR automatically shut off during the break and I had to tape the last part when it re-ran at 8:30. (Pacific time) It's kind of ironic--when it was originally syndicated, they took out about 4 minutes per episode due to the increased number of commercials per hour, and added one artificial commercial break (i.e. a break had to be put in where it wasn't intended, and that resulted in one commercial break being a little disjointed--not natural). But now that they added back the time, there are actually TWO artificial commercial breaks! Fortunately, the break editing is better than the past syndicated shows. Personally, since I'm taping it, its worth it to me to have the 4 minutes added back, and the improved color. Another enhancement is that its closed captioned, so I can watch them when my wife is on the phone without us bothering each other. C. I feel a tear or > crease makes it ineligble for NM. Question 2.8: I got my stuff but it {wasn't what I wanted, was damaged, wasn't in the condition the seller said it was, etc.}. What should I do? Answer 2.8: This is a complicated question. In general, you need to decide whether the situation arose due to legitimate confusion/miscommunication or whether it was due to some type of misrepresentation or fraud. The former is much more common than the latter. This is exactly why it is important to ask specific questions about the item you are purchasing before the transaction begins. However, if you genuinely feel that the seller misrepresented the items they had for sale, follow the steps in Q2.8 above. If the situation was due to you own lack of information, you may still try to negotiate a refund with the seller. Most reputable sellers will give you a full refund (possibly minus the shipping costs) if you return the item in the condition it arrived in. If you open an unopened item, you are most likely out of luck. Secondly, many packages get damaged in shipping. Even the best packaging jobs can be defeated by any delivery service (e.g.,USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc). If your package arrives damaged, send a brief, polite note to the seller informing them of the situation. The best defense here is to have established some type of "money back guarantee" before shipment occurs to deal with cases such as damage in shipping. Most reputable sellers will bend over backwards to satisfy a customer. However, they won't be taken advantage of either. If both parties cooperate, the process usually goes off without a hitch. (snip) All these issues have been hacked over a zillion times in the past. For me, all it comes down to is communication. I would accept that as a fair definition of NM, too, but se, that's where the problem comes in because just using the word "NEAR" puts the whole grading system off-kilter. I mean, there are very specific definitions of MINT, EXC, Very Fine, etc., all the way down to "POOR" (I'm remembering back to how they grade comics; I'm assuming there are definitions just as precise in cards and any other collectibles). C1: The figure is lose, paint is damaged and is missing all accessories. C2: Figure is loose, in good shape and missing an accessory or 2. C3: Figure is loose, in mint shape with all accessories. C4: Figure is carded, but the card is ripped or falling apart in the WORST way and the bubble may be split or ripped. C5: Figure is carded and the card itself is in good shape (NOT MINT!- corner worn and folded, dents or dings, etc.), but the bubble pack may be yellowing, ripped or becoming separated from the card. C6: Figure is carded, the card is NEAR MINT (Maybe some price sticker gum on it, a small crease, a little corner wear, etc.) but the bubble pack may be yellowing, ripped or becoming separated from the card. C7: Figure is on card, but the card is in GOOD shape (Dinged-up, creases, folded corner, etc.) but the bubble is perfectly attached, not ripped and not yellowing. C8: Card is in NM shape, and the bubble is not yellowing, not ripped and is perfectly attached to the card ((MOST FIGURES THAT ARE RELEASED TO STORES ARE ALREADY IN C7 AND C8 CONDITION!) C9: Card is in MINT shape and the bubble is perfectly attached but the bubble is scratched internally or externally- This figure is THE BEST a STORE can offer. C10: the figure came directly from the manufacturer or (more rarely) a store and is like a proof- the card is Mint and and the bubble is perfectly clear and flawless. C10: HARD to come by... I would think it should be fairly understood that condition matters on both the item AND the box. Granted, earlier items are so rare and even more rare in the box I might not care, but it's still a decision and a Mint ornament which is stored in the box and displayed in the box and requested mint, should mean a tear is worth mentioning, define it NM if you will, but make mention of flaw so I can make a decision. What it means is someone advertzies NM and I sm supposed to now ask, yeah, but does it have any tears? I'm just saying that, like all fast-talking salesmen everywhere, people push the envelope when separating the meaning of MINT and MIB or MIP. >Granted, earlier items are so rare and even more rare in >the box I might not care, That used to be true, but I'm starting to see fairly rare items showing up in the original package - as older Trek collector's start to liquidate their collections or the collections wind up as part of "the estate of..." and are being sold by others who may or may not know about Trek and also may or may not understand or care to carefully use the grading terminology. Which is another possible cause for this that we didn't mention, yet. If a seller says an item is in Excellent condition, is he referring to a grade or is he simply saying he thinks the item os in "really good shape"? Perhaps we should all get in the habit of asking? >but it's still a decision and a Mint ornament which >is stored in the box and displayed in the box and requested mint, should mean >a tear is worth mentioning, define it NM if you will, but make mention of flaw >so I can make a decision. I agree with your sentiment but, if there is a widely used term of "MINT" and another of "MINT IN A MINT BOX", then the seller has the excuse that he idn't claim it was "MINT IN A MINT BOX"; he just claimed it was "MINT"... as is apparently is. Not talking about your specific instance, here, but in general. >What it means is someone advertzies NM and I sm >supposed to now ask, yeah, but does it have any tears? Well, I would ask, "OK the item is "MINT"; how's the box it came in? >If I defined something >as NM when I sold it, I would mean perfect condition, but nothing's fully >perfect, so I won't say mint. That's because you have principles and are a basically honest person. What's that got to do with the majority of people who are trying to sell something? When I got mine, I took it out of the box so fast, I almost don't remember what it looked like! I bought 3 of them from a guy in Boston who had bought out every Hallmark store in MASS. when they first came out, knowing they'd be worth a fortune someday. I'd already seen them selling (at that time) for $450 - 500 at Trek cons, so his price of $125 was just too good to pass up. I got the last 3 he had. I sold one for $250, kept one and traded the third for a Galoob white-faced Data, a Mego 12" Kirk from STTMP and a Playmates Science Tricorder that a guy had reworked so that its electronics were more like the ones on STTNG. As I recall, that buyer also threw in some cash. And, yes, I still have the box my ornament came in, but I have no idea what condition it's in. Which autographs, if any, will be short runs for Voyager Profiles? Nobody is very short. The shortest is about 800 cards. The average is 1000. Those with 800 cards: Robt. Picardo, Robt. McNeill, Josh Clark, John Delancie, Jennifer Lien, Garrett Wang, Tim Russ, Ethan Phillips. The most plentiful are: Kate Mulgrew and Michael McKean. 2. What is the box run for this set? 20,000 boxes numbered. 3. What caused the delay for this set? Late autographs 5. Does Skybox get to meet the stars during the signings and who was the easiet to work with? Yes, and everybody was great, especially the cast regulars. 6. Do any of the stars get to have a say in what is going on with the trading cards? No 7. Would you ever consider doing a card set with facsimile autos (copies of the actual ones) so that those who can't afford high end cards can still see what the 'biggies' look like? Yes. **Misc** 1. Why did Skybox do paper promos for TNG Episodes 5, and what other Trek sets had these paper promos? 2. How many "I" cards have been redeemed? 3. How many "V" Cards have been redeemed? ****Customer service reports only 5 of the I card sets are left and only 12 or 15 of the V card sets have been redeemed**** 4. When all is over, what will Skybox do with extra sets of autos? Use them for promotional purposes. 5. Will there be a binder for Season 7? Yes 6. What is the future (if any) of the binder program? To keep it going. **ED NOTE** There is a company who is willing to act as the distributor point and guarantee quantities purchased, which should keep the binder program going now. They are in a good position to advertize and support the product. 7. Will the next movie follow the 'widevision' format of the other 8? Yes. **ED Note** THere was a time when Season VII and Movie set were going to be combined, at that point, there was going to be a regular sized set, but now that the two are seprate, each shuold maintain it's own previous format. Date: 19 Sep 1998 12:42:20 -0400 Archive and Unsubscribe information can be found at the bottom of this message. -- I am pleased to announce the winner of the 7 of 9 contest! I thought long and hard on this, there were several really funny jokes and each had certain merits that made it great, but I chose this one cause it was a dumb blonde joke, but fit well into the ST Universe. I am also including a few 'honorable mentions' Stop by : http://www.jklm.net/atn/7of9.html and see the rest!!! WINNDER-Chris Harmon Q: Why won't Captain Janeway let 7 of 9 pilot the Voyager? A: Because every time they pass a red star, 7 would stop the ship and wait for it to turn green. Honorable mentions-Larry and Mark!! The crew of the starship Voyager finially return back home to Earth. Captain Janeway grants everyone 6 months of shore leave. 7 of 9 decides that this would be a great opportunity to see some the sites on Earth. She decides that she would first like to see the Grand Canyon. She sees a Starfleet security officer and says, "Excuse me, officer, how do I get to the Grand Canyon?" The Starfleet officer says, "Wait here at this shuttle bay for the number 54 shuttlecraft. It'll take you right there." 7 of 9 thanks the officer and he walks off. Three hours later the Starfleet officer comes back to the same area, and, sure enough, 7 of 9 is still waiting at the same shuttle bay. The Starfleet officer says, "Excuse me, but to get to the Grand Canyon, I said to wait here for the number 54 shuttlecraft. That was three hours ago. Why are you still waiting?" 7 of 9 replies, "Don't worry, officer, it won't be long now. The 45th shuttlecraft just took off!" After attack the Kazon-Nistrim boarded Voyager. Captain Janeway, Lieutenant Torres and 7 of 9 decided to hide in the Cargo Bay Storage Bins. Culluh, leader of the Nistrim, ordered his First Officer to check the ship for survivors. The First Officer proceeded to follow orders and his search lead him to the Cargo Bay. He came upon the three storage bins and reported to Culluh. Culluh told his First Officer to find out what was in them and report back. The Officer kicked the first bin, which Janeway was in. She went,"Meeeooo", so the First Officer reported to Culluh there was a Tribble in it. Then he kicked the second bin, which Torres was in. She went, "Ruff Ra Ruff", so the First Officer reported there was a Humanoid Dog in it. Then he kicked the third bin, which 7 of 9 was in, and there was no sound at all. So the First Officer kicked it again and finally 7 of 9 said, "Latinum". -- James & Lynne Stewart http://www.jklm.net/index.html KLM Enterprises, Inc. 2805 Oakcliff Ct Johnson City, TN 37601 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Home of the AMOK TIMES NEWSLETTER-Info on Star Trek Collectibles KLM CARDS-Trek cards and stuff for sale! They go on the "quartile" system, which means that their "high" price is NOT the highest price that was reported to them; in fact, according to the guide, a full 25% of stores had prices HIGHER than $26.50 for the "station" card. Likewise, 25% of stores had prices lower than $13.75 (or whatever the low value was). This seems like an OK system, and it OUGHT to work, but my experience is the same as everyone else's--Scrye prices are too high. Where I live, standard prices are about 1/2 of Scrye's LOW, and I can sometimes find cards for 1/3 of Scrye's low price or even less. On the internet, anyone should be able to find just about any card for low Scrye, with the possible exception of oddballs like the Future Enterprise and Defiant. AN INTERESTING PHENOMENON: Although prices in my area have traditionally been quite low compared to the rest of the country (if Scrye is any indication), I think that inflated price guides sold nationally (like Scrye), have an effect of RAISING, or at least equalizing prices, because dealers see the guide and think "I'm not charging enough." So, instead of reflecting current selling prices, the guides actually DETERMINE selling prices to a great extent. It's one of the main reasons I do not do any sort of guide on my page and wouldn't even with a fear of torture....:) I think the internet alone messes up any guide system, to our advantage. Prior to your (anyones) discovery of the internet, where did you get your packs, boxes and inserts? Your local shop...who could sit behind the counter, read the guides and price his wares accordingly. Depending on the area you live in, you may have no other choice if you want to buy the cards you need. But, now, if you don't like his prices, you fire up the 'ole computer and surf. I, as a dealer, can't afford to price myself too high, even if it guides for alot or you'll go onto the next page or newsgroup ad. It is amazingly competive and that's great! It also gives us the ability to extend our collections farther then we could have if we had to pay full retail. You may only be able to afford one box at the local store, but 2-3 boxes here. More boxes get opened, more inserts get pulled,m ore goodies on the market, less prices. And yet the guides dont seem tobe able to represent that activity if they presume that a DS9 station will go for $26 or maybe even MORE???? Babble babble babble.... Why? Well, perhaps my experiences as a kid collecting coins will shed some light. In the 50's, 60's and well into the 70's, I collected US coins. There were really only 2 guides for evaluating condition and setting values in those days; the red book and the blue book. They were produced by the same company and purported to show national averages, by condition, for all US coins. They got the figures by polling dealers. One book guided dealers as to what price to buy them (and guided collectors as to what to expect to get when they sold to a dealer) and the other guided collectors as to what to expect to pay for a given coin in a given condition (and supposedly told the delaer what to charge). Well, for a very long time, I thought I had the greatest dealer in the world, because his selling prices were always 'WAY below the guide's prices. Then I started talking to other collectors and dealers in the area and learned that the guide's proices were seriously inflated compared to the average prices in the Philadelphia area. When polled, dealers were asked what they were selling a given coin for, but that's not the question they answered. They answered, "What would you LIKE to be selling the coin for?"; it should come as no surprise that this answer was considerably higher than the answer they should have given. Apparently, this was not limited to only the Philly area, conssequently, the guide was almost always high. Had the "inflated answers" been limited only to Philly, the guide wouldn't have always been so incredibly high. Perhaps this is what's happening with Scrye, too? >Although prices in my area have traditionally been quite low compared >to the rest of the country See, and you're in TN, not exactly the same neighborhood as Philly. >(if Scrye is any indication), I think that inflated >price guides sold nationally (like Scrye), have an effect of RAISING, >or at least equalizing prices, because dealers see the guide and think "I'm >not charging enough." Well, remember that if card collecting loses enough popularity, Scrye won't sell enough copies to stay viable, so they're motivated to see all prices constantly going up. In fact, prices of all things (especially, things we do not NEED to stay alive) fluctuate, either short-term or long-term. Despite this fact of nature, I never see price guides announcing a drop in value for the things they focus on. >So, instead of reflecting current selling prices, the guides actually >DETERMINE selling prices to a great extent. At one time, I thought >there was a flow of money from Scrye to the "retail outlets" for their >trouble in providing prices; who knows--the cash flow may go the other way. ;) You're joking but, in a way, it does. You all know the disc-shooting Star Trek pistol that's not really a Trek item at all but just has Trek graphics on the cardback? Well, not only do I have one of those, but I want the rifle, too! And the rifle is no more a Trek item than the pistol. I also collected every TOS novel and comic book from every publisher until I realized they were probably NEVER going to get finished. Then, I finally halted, so I only have 68 TOS novels, every Trek comic after Gold Key, all of the first 12 Gold Keys (yes, also all 4 anthologies) and more than half the Gold Keys after #12.
