June 27, 2000 By DAN WOOD The Orange County Register LONG BEACH - The Long Beach Ice Dogs have called a news conference today to announce they are leaving the International Hockey League to join the West Coast Hockey League next season. WCHL president Michael McCall confirmed the move Monday night, calling it a "big deal for our league" and referring to the Ice Dogs, owned by Barry and Margaret Kemp, as a "cornerstone for the future" of the WCHL. "We have received a formal application to the league and have had discussions for several weeks," McCall said. "It is just a formality, in terms of the ownership group in our league accepting the transfer. "Barry Kemp and his management group are exactly the type of people we are looking for to expand this league. They have credibility, integrity and a great history of sports ownership." While the IHL and the American League are the highest-level North American leagues short of the NHL, the WCHL is among five lower-level minor leagues. The WCHL will field nine teams next season and hopes to expand to 12 by 2002, McCall said. The quality of play certainly won't be the same for Long Beach fans, but the move figures to make business sense. Player salaries are considerably lower in the WCHL, which includes teams in San Diego, Bakersfield, Fresno and Phoenix. The Ice Dogs' nearest IHL rivals, the Utah Grizzlies, play in West Valley City, Utah, with other Western Conference teams in Chicago, Houston, Kansas City and Winnipeg, Manitoba. Such a quick move would not have been possible without Long Beach already having an organization in place. The Ice Dogs can compete immediately, with some of their current players "able to qualify under our guidelines," McCall said. Long Beach coach John Van Boxmeer, who has one year remaining on his contract, will apparently remain in the same capacity. "I know Mr. Kemp is looking at all his options right now," Van Boxmeer said. "Certainly, they have been very good to me. I would sit down and discuss whatever situations they had in mind." The Ice Dogs will likely continue to play at Long Beach Arena, McCall said. Kemp and his ownership group are also looking into building an arena and forming another team in Ontario, according to McCall. The WCHL also has teams in Anchorage, Alaska; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Boise, Idaho; and Tacoma, Wash. The league has issued memberships for expansion teams in Reno and Las Vegas, franchises that are contingent on the construction of new arenas. The WCHL is also eyeing Vancouver, Wash., as a potential expansion site. Kemp's decision to move to the WCHL was based on several factors. "First and foremost," he stated, "we view the WCHL as the hot new, up-and-coming minor league. They are the only minor league to register attendance growth in each of the past five years, and the quality of play has improved so dramatically that it garnered not only our attention, but the attention of other leagues as well as several NHL clubs. We expect it to be the premiere professional minor league in the western half of North America in the immediate future." Mike McCall, Commissioner of the WCHL stated, "CoachSports is well respected in professional sports circles and the league is ecstatic about the Ice Dogs commitment to the WCHL. Long Beach will be a significant cornerstone in the development of professional hockey in California and the impact of this decision will be felt long-term in professional hockey on the West Coast." The news was greeted enthusiastically by the City of Long Beach. Said City Manager Henry Taboada, "The Ice Dogs are an important part of our community and we are pleased that they will be continuing to provide high quality hockey and family entertainment to the fans in the greater Long Beach area." The WCHL, which plays a 72 game schedule culminating with The Taylor Cup Championship, will now have nine teams as the Ice Dogs join the San Diego Gulls, Phoenix Mustangs, Bakersfield Condors, Colorado Gold Kings, Fresno Falcons, Idaho Steelheads, Anchorage Aces and Tacoma Sabercats. In a separate announcement, Kemp said John Van Boxmeer has been promoted to Vice President of Hockey Operations for CoachSports, and Darryl Williams has been named the Head Coach of the Ice Dogs. - -ICE DOGS HOCKEY- [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: nv , 27 cs 2000 14:38:28 -0600 From: "Kristine Wilson" Subject: [UG] COPY OF SEASON SEAT HOLDER LETTER June 27, 2000 Dear Ice Dogs Fans, Today is the first day in an exciting new chapter in Long Beach Ice Dogs hockey. We have been successful in officially transferring our league affiliation from the International Hockey League to the West Coast Hockey League, commencing with the upcoming 2000-2001 season. As our most loyal and avid supporters, we are informing you of this action at the same time we're announcing it to the media. Why have we taken this step? We have undergone a lengthy and thoughtful analysis to determine how to keep the Ice Dogs in Long Beach now and in the future. Our evaluation determined that we had become geographically isolated in the IHL. Over the course of the last four years, teams in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Las Vegas suspended play. Teams in those cities constituted some of our best rivalries. Further research turned up the fact that of all the pro hockey leagues in North America, only the WCHL has shown attendance growth in each of the past five years. Last season attendance in the WCHL grew 13%! The Ice Dogs were one of only two teams in the IHL to report improved attendance. As for the quality of play in our new league, the rapid growth of the WCHL has prompted interest from not only the IHL, but also the NHL and East Coast Hockey League. Further evidence of the league's high quality of play was found on our own roster last season, where four of our top players came from the West Coast League. We believe the WCHL is perfectly positioned to be the premiere professional minor league for the western half of North America. Among the immediate benefits for you will be a home season of 36 games instead of 41, and no increase in ticket prices as previously announced. Your personal account representative will contact you soon to discuss these changes in greater detail. Furthermore, you'll enjoy great new rivalries with cities such as San Diego, Phoenix, Bakersfield and soon-to-be-announced Ontario. And while John Van Boxmeer has been promoted to Vice President of Hockey Operations for all of CoachSports, he will still assemble our roster, which will now be coached by long time Ice Dog favorite Darryl Williams. We look forward to your continued support as we begin our 5th exciting season with a quest for a new prize, The Taylor Cup. With continued fan growth and the loyalty you've shown in the past, you can expect to see the Ice Dogs in the WCHL and in Long Beach for many years to come! Outside of the fact the Long Beach trip was the shortest, it was not always the cheapest trip, and last season we flew to every Western Conference rival the day of the game anyway. In fact, a direct flight to Kansas City is only about a half hour longer than the trip to LB, and the flights to Houston and Chicago were about an hour longer. 2) Ticket Prices: WE HAVE ACTUALLY LOWERED SOME TICKET PRICES FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON, INCLUDING THE MOST POPULAR CENTER PLAZA SEATS (REDUCED THREE DOLLARS PER SEAT, AND SOME GOLD LEVEL SEATS WHICH WERE REDUCED SIX DOLLARS). The bottom line is this is a league that now has 8 of 11 teams with full NHL affiliations, and two others, Manitoba (Red Wings) and Chicago (Toronto/Islanders/Blackhawks) that have working agreements with NHL teams. None of us like to see teams leave, but the players continue to get younger, hungrier, tougher, and more skilled. In terms of rivalries, the Long Beach rivalry was great to start the year, but by the time January rolled around the Ice Dogs looked and played like an old European team-which they were! If you need a rivalry, you may need not to look any further than Kansas City--when the Kansas City Canucks roll into town with Stan "the Steamer" Smyl chirping behind the bench and the typical Vancouver farm team of big, tough Western Canadian kids---it shouldn't take took long to get something going. Long Beach was never going to survive at this level, and frankly, they may have a tough time even surviving in the WCHL. Just think, they had their best attendance ever this past season, without their so-called rivals in Phoenix, San Francisco and Vegas. Tim Hinchey, who really helped turn that franchise around off the ice left in May to go to the Sacramento Kings. There have been more departures from their front office than at LAX during a Friday morning. Good luck to the Ice Dogs, we will miss the Yard House after the games, but we won't miss the huge crowds of 2,500 and the great atmosphere that they brought to the IHL.
