I picked up the Live Shrek cd awhile back, and while I haven't listened to it much, I would like to argue it's not as bad as it's getting credit for. It's incredibly disjointed, silly, absurd, rock and roll. I think a lot of people are judging it by the Jazz standard, and it's got absolutely nothing to do with jazz. It's loud and obnoxious, and there's nothing that i find more funny that Ribot singing. He seems like this "play it cool" kind of guy, and then he sings these utterly inane phrases like, "Yo! I killed your god, that's what this machine gun's for.." If you buy an album called Yo! I killed your god, you should probably expect it to sound like this. from, matt - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 16:52:50 +0200 From: "Francesco Martinelli" Subject: Re: Jazziz interviews Zorn > Readers of this list will be happy to know that an great interview resides within the August issue of Jazziz and that we even get a mention in the article's opening paragraph as "rabid twenty something fans this means I count for two :-)) - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 11:12:18 -0400 (EDT) From: Theodorus@webtv.net (Theodorus Klaase) Subject: Marc Ribot I think some of Ribot's best playing is on Circle Maker. I think a lot of people ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Which is what I am looking for in a good portion of the music that I buy. I think that Leonid Soybetman (Klekta Red), just to take an example, fits perfectly your description, but not Marc on this record. I might be wrong, but being absurd and silly does not seem to be something natural for Marc (at least on a stage or on records). I find the alleged silliness and absurdism to be quite artificial and trite. It just does not sound right. > are judging it by the Jazz standard, and it's got absolutely nothing to do ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Who would even think to judge Ribot by "Jazz standard"? Just look at the people we talk about on this list, very few would be at ease to be judged by the "Jazz standards". You might confuse this list with r.m.b. where "purity" and "pedigree" issues occupy 75% of the bandwidth. > with jazz. It's loud and obnoxious, and there's nothing that i find more ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I guess I will have to listen to it more. "Loud and obnoxious"? Really? As far as I can say, it is neither one or the other. I would have to go back to the early '70s rock and forget everything that happens after to even think using "loud and obnoxious". Maybe you pushed the level too high on your stereo. > funny that Ribot singing. He seems like this "play it cool" kind of guy, and > then he sings these utterly inane phrases like, "Yo! Sorry to keep harping on this, but there are aeveral parts on this album that for me redeem the unlistenable parts. These include "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise", the cuban song ("Jamon con Yuca"?), the Don Ayler cover, "Somebody's Walkin' in my house" (after the repeated vocals at first which get old quick), and one or two of the Shrek type songs near the end - "ppulse" and "Expressionless". On the downside are the one where he counts (of course), "Clever White Youths" (mainly b/c he uses not one but two lines that are also in Dire Straits' 'Money for Nothing'), the ending on "The Wind Cries Mary". I still like this one more than the Postisos album just because it has a rougher edge - although I wouldn't say it 'cuts through steel' like the promo blurb says.... I actually don't think his singing is that bad; I even liked the off-key vocals on "Commit a Crime" from _Requiem for what's his name_. But I do think its safe to say that his best stuff can be found on other peoples albums and that I won't be rushing out to get any more of his soon. Also, about the Tropicalia box set: I think its all really good, but the discs are all short (30-40 min each) and there is nothing extra, if that Tropiclia CD is available elsewhere. I think the little booklet that comes with it is in Portuguese too. By the time I organised concerts, I noticed the same thing. But this makes it something very interesting, at least for me. I was really surprised to find this cd "Yo.." in the stores, because I thought Marc left this project many miles behind him. But it seems he still considers this one to be one of his most unique projects. I don't think the rest of his work differs so much from the shrek stuff if you listen to any of his solos on different settings. What I hear is a r&b/soul guitarist with a lot of background in classical guitar and a great love for Django Reinharts who opened his mind quite very far. Listening to his interpretations of jazz standards makes me think very student on jazz guitar should also listen to it. It teaches such a lot on how free you are in treating music, as long as it fits to your personal implications on music. But again, it's just my opinion. BTW I heared Bill Frisell singing "Puff, the magic dragon" a couple of years ago. It was really fun. I think if you feel like singing, just sing. Even I do (Pray you never hear it :-) ). Zorn and Mori were very close friends. They played "Memento Mori", and I remember it being ravishingly beautiful but rather over-extended. I can see how it would go on a lot if I had the CD, though.
