The Salt Lake Roasting Co. and Café
The Salt Lake Roasting Co. and Café, has been serving fresh roasted coffee, pastries and food with flare since 1981. Owner John Bolton created this downtown staple with a love for both coffee and food and a little of everything in between.
When John was first drawn into the coffee world, he quickly wanted to bring this amazing brew to the Wasatch front, similar to what he would encounter in his many travels. Instead of trying to import roasted coffee, he decided to bring the world of green beans to Salt Lake City, roasting them fresh on the premises and selling it by the pound. Now 25 years later, his dream of importing unique coffees and making them available to Salt Lake has paid off.
“The Roasting Co” as it is often referred to, now provides over 40 different varieties of coffee. In the brightly colored two-story building, you will find casual seating areas as well as a lush summer patio. With free wireless Internet available, one can find room to relax with coffee, tea or lunch while working on your laptop.
John's passion for many different food styles is incorporated into the daily lunch and dinner menu. Items such as: soup, salads, quiche and unique entrees such as our light curry dish Vegetables Indienne, or our Pesto Salmon are main staples. Another favorite is our classic Seafood chowder, which is served every Friday and Saturday. In the summertime diners also delight in the spicy chilled Gaspacho soup and our refreshing Banana Espresso Frappe blended drink. With such varied menu options available the Roasting Co. is great for a quick business lunch, or a late night dinner that can service anyone’s food desires. In addition to the food, no coffee shop would do without amazing pastries. Our in-house Pastry Chef David Wheeler, has throughout the years, brought classic creations with a European flare such as; cream cheese Danish, ham & cheese croissants, fresh fruit flans, apple pies to decedent chocolate torts.
With great passion for food and coffee comes great responsibility, and John felt the need to further educate himself and his customers to the varied cultures that bring coffee to us. He has traveled the world over to meet growers and brokers. This involves exploring the nuances of everything from growing conditions to how variance in roasting can bring out all the subtleties of the coffee flavor. With the increase in public awareness concerning Organic, Shade Grown and Fair Trade coffees, John’s travels gave him a first hand perspective on all of these social needs and trends within the coffee industry and has allowed us to continually support and sell theses coffees.
Our passion for coffee is highlighted on the website www.roasting.com, where one can access many of John’s photo’s and travel logs of his personal journeys into the coffee world. With the integration of an on-line shop site, our many coffees are readily accessible to anyone over the internet.
In 2003, the Salt Lake City Public Library and the Roasting Co. joined forces to bring a café into the library to help service it’s patrons’ many needs. Now both stores are quickly accessible off the library trax stop, and both provide free wireless Internet access. For a great cup or coffee, tea, or food The Salt Lake Roasting Co. offers up the “world in a cup” and little more.

The Beehive Tea Room
The Beehive Tea Room is a vintage-style tearoom with a European Café atmosphere, located at 12 West Broadway (300 South just west of Main Street), in downtown Salt Lake City. The Beehive carries over 35 varieties of quality loose-leaf teas from countries all over the world including India, China, Africa and Japan. Each tea is brewed and served in an individual pot, and among the standard favorites like Earl Grey and English Breakfast one can also find Orange Jasmine, Chocolate Mint, and an earthy Pu-erh harvested from 1300 year old tea trees in China. Several varieties of decaf and herbals are also available, all of which may be purchased in bulk. One may also choose from a variety of other beverages including hot chocolate, juice, bottled waters, creamy Chai lattes, hot chocolate, and French Press coffees. For the hot summer months, the Beehive plans to introduce a variety of new iced drinks including bubble tea, smoothies, and an iced tea spritzer. The Beehive serves a light lunch of soup, salads, and sandwiches as well as an assortment of scones and sweets. They also offer an English style “Afternoon Tea (reserve in advance) and a special kid’s individual tea party.
The Beehive Tea Room offers an alternative to the clattering haste of the contemporary coffee shop culture. High ceilings, vintage décor, and oversized café windows looking out onto Broadway offer customers a serene place to collect their thoughts over a calming cup of tea. In addition, the “Willow Room,” which has been described as “Oscar Wilde’s Drawing Room,” provides an intimate space that may be reserved for a variety of activities including (but not limited to) small business meetings, birthday celebrations, wedding showers, and book clubs. A small gift shop offers a variety of items from teapots and cups to fortune telling cards, party accessories and children’s’ tea sets. There is also Free Wireless Internet access provided through courtesy of XMission.
The Beehive also offers one more twist- one can also get wedding planning information through the “Wedding Library”. The idea for the library came while the owner, Lisa Brady, was working at a shop making floral arrangements for weddings. She noticed that the brides she met were frequently bewildered by the daunting task of finding all the services that fit with their vision and budget, and often seemed to find things as much by chance, as through planning. The idea came to her that the whole process could be simplified, if only there were a place a person could go to find all the resources needed. She pulled together a collection of books and magazines on a wide range of topics from flowers and decorations, to etiquette, ceremonies and cakes; traveled to cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco visiting tearooms for ideas, and the Beehive Tea Room and Wedding Library was born.
Open 7 days a week at 12 West Broadway, Salt Lake City. Just ½ block from TRAX. Call 328-4700 for hours and reservations. www.beehivetearoom.com
Brewvies

Brewvies Cinema Pub is a two-screen movie theatre in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Where most theatres would have a lobby as an entrance to the auditoria, Brewvies has a pub, complete with pool tables, wireless internet, a kitchen and a bar. It serves beer and pub food in addition to standard movie fare. Patrons can bring their food and drink into the theatre to eat during the movie or have them in the pub.
Owners David Movitz and Matt Pernichele first thought of opening, what they would later call a Cinema Pub, while attending a movie in 1994. During a critical time in the film, an empty beer bottle came rolling down the floor under the seats. This led to the observation that while it was nice to have a beer during a film, it's kind of embarrassing and inconvenient to be sneaking it into a movie theatre as an adult. Once you reach a position in life where you can buy a beer in a movie theatre, you should be able to.
While Dave and Matt were pondering this, several friends returned from a vacation to Europe and mentioned that beer is often found at movie concession stands over there. They also became aware of two theatres in Portland, Oregon that served beer and food. This led to several enjoyable research trips.
It was not immediately obvious how to make such an operation conform to Utah Liquor Laws. After some research and help from the DABC it was decided that a Class C Tavern License would allow it, but was it a good idea? How many people would actually like the idea enough to come and would there be too many behavior problems to make it an enjoyable experience? After much informal research, signs indicated that the plan should become a reality.
Brewvies charges $4 for movies ($2 for matinees and on Wednesday nights) and shows intermediate run films. This means they get the films after the $8 places are done with them. "We are getting the movies later than the larger theatres," explains Pernichele "but by the time we get them, we know what is good and what isn't."
Brewvies sells more food than they originally expected to. "It turns out people like our food and like to eat it while watching a movie" says Pernichele. They serve pizza, salads, a variety of grilled sandwiches, burritos, nachos and other pub food. There is a table along the back of each row of seats in the theatre where patrons can put their food and drink. There is even a foot rail for serious relaxing. The most popular dishes at Brewvies are Garlic Burgers, Chipotle Black Bean Eggrolls, the Spicy Chicken Sandwich and Four Cheese Pizza.
Brewvies has a Class C Tavern License from the State of Utah. This means that anyone can come in without a membership but no one under 21 is ever admitted and only 3.2% beer can be served. There is now a variety of such beer, brewed locally and of high quality. Beers such as Uinta Cutthroat, Bohemian Pilsner and Moab Dead Horse Ale now make up the bulk of Brewives 18 draft beers. They also carry Guiness, PBR and Bud Light.
A list of current films can be found on Brewvies web site at www.brewvies.com or by calling the Brewvies hotline at (801) 355-5500.
