<Kheldar>
So, Jannot wakes up on the morning of Saturday the 3rd of
September.
<Kheldar> I believe Celeste had agreed to spend
some time with you today, perhaps looking at... places to
rent.
<Kent> Right. That's
the plan. After waking, Jannot will get breakfast, and go
on over to pick up Celeste, wearing his new clothes..
<Kheldar> Ah yes. I'm
sure that Jacid will be happy to see that. :)
<Kent> Have to appease
the father figures...
<Kheldar> You meet
with Celeste, and before long, you are on your way.
<Kheldar> What's the plan?
<Kent> Just like it
would seem. spend the morning going to the few places
that seem appropriately ... sized... and then the last
half of the day, after eating a lunch, Jannot wants to go
looking around for information some more. Hit the
library. Maybe even see if they're looking to hire.
<Kheldar> Right. The
two of you do some looking around. It seems a little
strange looking for a place for you AND someone else...
<Kent> Jannot's always
lived in a larger place than he's needed...
<Kheldar> True.
<Kheldar> You find a couple possibilities, but
nothing solid, and nothing you would be able to move into
right away anyhow. It'll probably take some more looking.
<Kent> Hm.
<Kent> Alright. How about lunch then? Perhaps
another elvish soup...
<Kheldar> After a nice
lunch, Celeste figures that perhaps if you're going to
head up to the library, perhaps she'll be better off
heading back and doing some work.
<Kent> sounds good.
Jannot will see her off with a small kiss.
<Kheldar> She seems...
appreciative.
<Kent> Well, most guys
aren't so ... welcoming to a person when they impose
their... presence into their lives... but Jannot likes
it.,
<Kheldar> You make
your way up to the library.
<Kent> I figured...
Look for info and then, on the way out, see if there is
opportunity for employment.
<Kheldar> Ah,
certainly... Let's see... 1 silver entry fee...
<Kent> YAH....
<Kent> Gadzooks...
<Kheldar> That's what
you paid back in Zuqar I believe...
<Kent> Really? I
thought it was a few bronze.
<Kent> Oh... poo. alright. forking over 1 silver...
reluctantly.
<Kheldar> So, what
kind of info are you looking for.
<Kent> Jannot will ask
for any references to Llauron Mistovers works and see if
they have the ooriginal text... or a copy of the original
text that the prophecy was from.
<Kheldar> Hmm...
<Kheldar> It turns out that they don't have a copy
of Llauron's ... manuscript that you saw back in Zuqar.
<Kheldar> They DO have a different manuscript of
his writings though...
<Kent> Is the
reference librarian able to read the old Kayish that it's
in?
<Kheldar> Actually,
it's a translated book of his poetry, which (according to
the old elf) would be from before he had his visions...
<Kent> Oh. so, not
likely to have any ... insight that Jannot is looking
for.
<Kheldar> most likely
not, no.
<Kheldar> It is possible that you could do some
browsing through some different texts and find some
related references, but that would take a good chunk of
time on your part, perhaps the work of a couple days.
<Kheldar> Such a search would more likely be
successful up in Freehold with their larger library..
but... who knows.
<Kheldar> May or may not be worth the couple silver
for the entry fees to look for info that may or may not
be there...
<Kent> They have no
material of his after he went to live with the humans?
<Kheldar> None that
the library assistant is able to find easily.
<Kent> Really... Are
there any elvish book shops in the area that the
librarian knows of?
<Kheldar> "Well,
assuming that you're looking for other writings from this
Llauron... You may or may not have any luck. There are a
couple elvish book sellers, but Llauron's works are
somewhat rare I believe..."
<Kheldar> "Would you like directions to a
couple of the book sellers?"
<Kent> Jannot will nod
in affirmation and take the directions.
<Kheldar> One is
actually relatively close. The other two are further, and
one of those may be out of business now. The librarian
isn't sure.
<Kent> Cool. One other
item of business before leaving, Jannot will ask if the
librarian if he recognizes a symbol...
<Sareth> [just a side
note, more curiosity on your world than anything else,
but are libraries like this public, or sponsored by
wealthy patrons?]
<Kheldar> [most
libraries are originally backed by government or private
concerns. they usually end up becoming independant and
surviving off... high fees]
<Sareth> /nods
<Kheldar> This
particular library is a city library, initially funded by
the local government.
<Kheldar> The symbol isn't familiar to the
librarian.
<Kent> Jannot will nod
his thanks and take leave of the place. In search of the
elvish shops.
<Kheldar> What about
asking about job opportunities at the library?
<Kent> Ah yes. Jannot
will ask. Good thing he remembered before leaving...
<Kheldar> There is
actually some interest in some assistance, provided of
course that you are qualified...
<Kent> Well,
"What are the qualifications?"
<Kent> reading, writing and lifting?
<Kheldar> "Well,
if you have a moment, let me get the head librarian.
He'll have some questions to ask you."
<Kent> "Yes, I'll
wait, thank you."
<Kheldar> You only
have to wait about a quarter bell before an older man
comes out and finds you.
<Kheldar> "I am Mathas. I'm told that you
might be interested in working here at the library?"
<Kent> "Yes, I
would. Do you have a position that need filled?"
<Kheldar> "We can
always use additional help, although the pay might not be
very good until you have proved yourself. Are you
interested?"
<Kent> Jannot smiles,
"Yes. My name is Jon and I am interested. What do
you have for me?"
<Kheldar> "That
will depend. Seldas tells me that you can read, and that
is certainly a requirement. Do you have some time for me
to ask you some questions about your knowledge?"
<Kent> Jannot thinks,
[what time of the day is it now?]
<Kheldar> It's...
perhaps mid afternoon.
<Kent> no way to get
to the two further away shops if Jannot hangs out too
long, huh?
<Kheldar> True.
<Kent> "Well, I
have a couple places I was going to visit this afternoon,
but, yes. I can spend the time here."
<Kheldar> He nods, and
takes you back to a small private room.
<Kheldar> He proceeds to question you about a broad
variety of topics. he seems fairly impressed by your
knowledge of history and authors of sometimes obscure
nature.
<Kent> Cool.
<Kent> I thought that that skill in Heraldry might
be a plus too.
<Kheldar> He notes
(not unkindly) that your knowledge of practical, modern
subjects (beyond that of heraldry of course) is
definitely limited.
<Sareth> [dad gum,
stuck in the reference library again.]
<Kheldar> he does ask
what (if any) your past experience might be with regards
to libraries or similar work.
<Kent> Jannot will
smile. "My previous work was... far more tedious.
I've not worked per se in a library before, though
sometimes , with all the reading and research I've done,
it seems like I have."
<Kent> [honesty being the best policy.]
<Kheldar> :) tedious
work, eh?
<Kent> [well... okay,
mostly honest...]
<Kheldar> He at last
finishes asking questions, and nods a couple times.
"We might actually have some use for you. We would
have to take care of some paperwork and such, so it might
be a week or two before you could start. Are you
interested?"
<Kent> Jannot ... nods
again."Yes. I believe I am."
<Kheldar> "Why
don't you drop by in a week... next Saturday and we can
sign some papers."
<Kent> "What
would the pay be?"
<Kheldar> "I
think for now we can start you at 8 bronze per week. This
would definitely increase if things work out well."
<Kheldar> That's just a little over average monthly
cost of living for a single person.
<Kent> 8 bronze per
week... Hm. wouldn't pay entry fee... "Jannot offers
a single nod. "Good enough. It'll pay the
bills."
<Kheldar> He nods.
"I have a good feeling about you. This could work
out very well."
<Kent> Jannot smiles.
"Well, I hope you're right. I've enjoyed my time
spent in libraries, so I think it'll work out well
also."
<Kent> Blah, blah blah, and he gets out of there.
<Kheldar> Right.
<Kheldar> It's fairly late in the afternoon.
Perhaps only a bell until sundown. You're a little
hungry, but you can probably head to the nearby shop if
you'd like.
<Kent> grr... Yeah.
It'd be on his mind to see that elvish book shop.
<Kheldar> Ok then.
<Kheldar> After leaving the library, you make you
way to the book store, following the directions from the
librarian.
<Kent> Is it an
isolated elvish store, or are there others near by...
like little italy?
<Kheldar> This city
doesn't segragate the elves as much as Zuqar did. There
aren't any obviously elvish buildings around.
<Kent> okay
<Kent> Is there a sign or something?
<Kheldar> err... most
likely a...book of some kind... in the window.
<Kent> [snort] okay
<Kheldar> You head
inside and find a smallish room positively lined with
books. There are two elves talking to each other in what
must be an elvish language.
<Kent> okay, well,
Jannot won't interrupt them... though... from what he's
seen of elves, the discussion might take ... years. He'll
look around.
<Kheldar> :)
<Kheldar> One of the elves (you aren't really able
to estimate his age, although he appears neither young
nor old) steps away from the other and addresses you in
slightly halting Kayesh.
<Kheldar> "You looking book? I can help?"
<Kent> "Yes. I
seek a book of poetry by Llauron Mistover."
<Kent> Jannot tries to just speak clearly...
<Kheldar>
"Llauron Mistover. He poet? Yes?"
<Kent> Jannot replies,
"Yes, poet. Do you have books from Mistover?"
<Kheldar> "Sold
only book last week. Elf traveling west."
<Kent> hm. After a
protracted, frustrated moment of silence, Jannot says,
"Do other book sellers have Llauron Mistover in this
city?"
<Kheldar> "Not
know. Do not think"
<Kent> hm. Jannot ...
hmm... Jannot thinks for a minute. Has the other elf
reacted at all? shock, stun, humor? disgust?
<Kheldar> The other
elf is apparently waiting patiently for you to finish
whatever business you have.
<Kent> What about the
original book that Jannot read that had the quote... I
guess that that wouldn't help any.... the book he
borrowed, that had a quote .. from the scroll.
<Kheldar> Hmm...
probably not. You don't recall the book as being
particularly pertinate.
<Kent> Right. Jannot
politely says thank you and, frustrated, heads back to
the home of Jacid and Gina.
<Kheldar> Ok. Looking
to spend some time with Celeste?
<Kent> mmm... Yeah.
Perhaps a little chat. Let her know that he has a
position at the library...
<Kheldar> They've
already eaten, but Gina offers you some leftovers...
<Kent> Oh yeah, food.
Jannot accepts the food gratefully.
<Kheldar> Celeste
seems happy to hear to news about the job possibility.
She also seems interested in some more reading lessons
this evening.
<Kent> That's all
Jannot needs to hear to brighten the rest of his evening.
<Kheldar> You going to
mention the job possibility to Jacid and Gina?
<Kent> Oh, sure. I
figured that they were there too.
<Kent> And, it's more than a job possibility, the
guy pretty much said sign the papers, the job is yours.
<Kheldar> Gina seems
happy for you. Jacid is... well, he nods respectfully, as
if to say... good for you.
<Kent> Jannot will say
a respectful thank you of course.
<Kheldar> You and
Celeste have a ... nice evening together. She's getting
to the point of being able to read some of the easier
sections without much prompting from you.
<Kent> Cool.
<Kent> That's nice. Perhaps eventually she can read
a story to him to fall asleep to... that's a nice
thought.
<Kheldar> :)
<Kheldar> Unless there is anything else to take
care of...
<Kent> Nope. that's
about it.
<Kheldar> Ok then. You
eventually head back to the inn.
<Kent> Jannot will go
back to his place after the lesson and sleep.
<Kheldar> You awake
the next morning, Sunday the 4th of September.
<Kheldar> What's the plan?
<Kent> well, breakfast
and then Jannot will try to hit those other two shops
that the libraian described.
<Kent> Jannot will keep his ears open to any
possible news from Zuqar as well, though nothing active.
<Kheldar> Right.
<Kheldar> You are on your way out to the nearer of
the two shops (the one that may or may not still be
open), making your way up one of the larger streets which
heads more or less from one of the gates in towards the
city center.
<Kent> ... I feel
something on the way...
<Kent> I can feeeeeel it...
<Kheldar> Suddenly,
there is some commotion behind you, in the direction of
the gate.
<Kent> Jannot will
make sure that he's out of the way of traffic before
looking to the gate.
<Kheldar> You look
back to check things out and see a man on a horse, making
his way as quickly as possible up towards the city
center.
<Kheldar> You of course step back out of the way to
let him pass.
<Kent> Of course.
<Kent> Which gate?
<Kent> south?
<Kheldar> Yes, the
south gate.
<Kheldar> You would guess that he is a messenger of
some kind, although he's most likely an official
messenger of some sort, as such riding through city
streets is most likely frowned upon.
<Kent> Right. hm.
Heraldry?
<Kheldar> Ok,
apparently he would be a messenger for the Miraj... army.
Not the men that guard the city, but those who protect
the surrounding lands.
<Kent> GGYAH!
<Kent> Army?
<Kent> Hm. this troubles Jannot.
<Kheldar> As his horse
passes, you suddenly lock eyes with a man on the other
side of the street. He seems to look you up and down.
<Kent> Jannot checks
the guy out quickly, but will continue on his way.
<Kheldar> Actually,
the man (who does happen to be wear some leather armor)
starts heading in your direction.
<Kent> oh man...
<Kent> Jannot looks around. what is this area like?
<Kheldar> Well, it's
fairly crowded (which is why you can't tell immediately
if he's armed.)
<Kent> what about the
direction that Jannot was headed?
<Kent> Is there a relatively well lit area that
ISNT overly crowded?
<Kheldar> Sure. It'd
be easy to get out of the press of people without...
completely isolating yourself.
<Kent> What's the
fellows demeanor?
<Kheldar> He appears
to be a well traveled fellow. His cloak is pretty dusty
and weather beaten. He seems... intent on you, but not
apparently hostile.
<Kent> Well, Jannot
has been trying to NOT draw attention to himself so this
is troubling. Jannot will pick up his pace a little and
head in his previous direction - to the book seller. ...
and opccaisionally look to see if the fellow ... follows.
<Kheldar> The man
seems to be following you. He's not trying to hide at
all, just keeping up without running.
<Kent> So, is he
armed?
<Kheldar> You do
notice that he's wearing a sword at his waist.
<Kent> Nice. It
doesn't happen to have a scabbard that matches mine, does
it?
<Kheldar> No, it seems
to be a fairly nondescript, undecorated scabbard,
although you can't tell any details without letting him
get closer.
<Kent> Well, at least
that is good...
<Kent> Jannot will continue until he finds the book
seller. If the guy wants trouble, let him make it there.
<Kheldar> You do turn
off the major street onto a lesser one (although still
not an alley).
<Kheldar> The man follows you and seems to pick up
his pace somewhat as if to catch up.
<Kent> How far exactly
is this store?
<Kheldar> Oh... you've
still got another 5 minutes or so...
<Kent> So... as the
fellow nears, what are the businesses in this area like?
<Kheldar> You aren't
in a lower class area if that's what you're wondering...
<Kent> well, Jannot
might pick one that has a decent amount of traffic or a
small crowd before letting the guy catch up to him.
<Kheldar> That
shouldn't be a problem. There are plenty of people
around.
<Kheldar> ...In fact... you do spot a small patrol
of city guardsmen up ahead. They're slowly making their
way down the street in your direction. They'll be in
sight for a bit.
<Kent> Cool. That's
better. Jannot makes sure that they're within easy sight
and slows his pace.
<Kheldar> The man
rapidly approaches you, looks around briefly and then
says to you quietly... "We need to talk"
<Kent> Jannot stops
walking and looks at the fellow. is he nervous? Jannot is
actually kind of mad now... believe it or not.
<Sareth> No, he's not
particularly nervous, although he does seem to be
watching the crowd as much as he watches you.
<Kent> Jannot looks
into the fellows eyes, "what do you need from
me?" he says quietly.
<Sareth> "Some
information. You have some... powerful interest in some
quarters, and it is best they not find you."
<Kent> Jannot furrows
his brow. "Okay. Do you have a place in the
city?"
<Sareth> "No. I'm
afraid not. I just arrived."
<Kent> Jannot raises
one eye brow. "From where?"
<Sareth> I was in
Choco, just a short time ago."
<Kheldar> That's west
of Zuqar.
<Kent> "What's
your name?"
<Sareth> "I am
Whellen."
<Kent> after a pause,
"And, what's my name?"
<Sareth> "That's
a very good question. I don't know the answer. I do know
one thing. I was sent to find you."
<Kent> disbelief shows
on Jannot's face, "Then how did you find me? How did
you know where I was?"
<Sareth> "A few
weeks ago i was... hunting. My... Lord came to me and
told me to go to Miraj and find someone he had interest
in. He gave me a description. You... most certainly match
it."
<Kent> crap.
<Sareth> "there
is only so much I can and should reveal here. Someplace
less public would be good."
<Kent> Jannot relaxes
a little bit, then asks, "your lord... wouldn't
happen to have become newly... more influential, would
he?"
<Kheldar> [gm
chortles]
<Sareth>
"Unfortunately, no. In fact... he seems to be
losing. And I fear what fate that may bring about. There
is a fire sweeping the land. A black, black fire."
he gazes at something you can't seem to place.
<Kent> Enlightenment
crosses Jannot's face briefly and he says, "Alright.
Come with me to my place."
<Sareth> I nod.
<Kent> Janot leads the
fellow back to his rented room at the inn.
<Kheldar> Right. The
two of you head back there, and you take him to your
room.
<Kent> After checking
the lock on the door... Jannot motions for the fellow to
sit...
<Sareth> Whellen sits
in the indicated chair, leaning back wearily.
<Kent> Jannot will sit
on the bed then.
<Kent> After a pause, "so, Choco. that's a
long ride."
<Sareth> "An even
longer walk."
<Sareth> He smirks.
<Kent> Jannot smiles.
"Yes. It is."
<Sareth> "My
name, as I said, is Whellen. I am a servant of Qaran.
<Kent> Jannot smiles a
little and nods.
<Sareth> "Several
weeks ago I was hunting the area of Choco seeking out
some of his enemies... bandits and thieves preying on the
farmers there. One day Qaran came to me. he said i was to
come to Maraj seeking... someone of interest to him. I am
to protect him. Protect you."
<Sareth> Whellen pauses and contemplates Jannot's
reaction.
<Kent> Hm. well,
Oddly, Jannot isn't all that shocked. "Wow. A guy
doesn't hear that every day."
<Sareth> "No. i
suppose not."
<Kent> "So. Do
you know anything else? What I'm supposed to be doing?
where I'm supposed to go?" Jannot is relieved, and a
bit resigned.
<Sareth> Whellen sighs
and thinks a moment. "I don't know. Not now. But
there may be a possibility. Only time will tell. For now
I need to know why I was sent. Tell me, if you will, what
you know."
<Kent> Jannot
chuckles. "what a morning... Well, I guess... I am
chosen for something. I've been told as much. It seems
that there's a new ... god or king in charge of Zuqar
that for some reason has a very pointed interest in ...
wasting me."
<Sareth> Whellen nods.
<Sareth> Whellen softly whispers, almost to
himself. "Do not go to Zuqar. I forbid it..."
<Kent> Jannot pauses
absorbing Whellens forbidding and then continues,
"Oh and it seems that Qaran isn't the only god
interested in me..." and Jannot briefly relays his
visitation of Relith while seeking to pray to Qaran.
<Sareth> [how much
relation would I have had with Relith in my travels?]
<Kheldar> I was just
checking that. You are familiar with his description of
Relith. You would know who that is.
<Sareth> Alright... Do
I have any further incites into Relith than would be
available from the logs? His nature, his relation to
Qaran, how truly powerful he is... that sort of thing.
<Kheldar> Hmm... you
aren't aware of any relationship between the two gods.
<Kheldar> His power is somewhat less than Qaran's
though.
<Sareth> Whellen nods.
<Sareth> "I am familiar with Relith."
<Kent> and then,
"Oh and one more thing, " and Jannot relates
the vision that he say when he went to the priest of
Qaran.
<Kheldar> Ah, the one
with the bowl on fire and such?
<Kent> Right.
<Kent> black soot and such.
<Kheldar> It might
strike Jannot that he had no difficulties telling the
story...
<Sareth> Whellen sits
up at hearing the story.
<Kent> "If you
like that," somewhat resignedly Jannot also recites
the now familiar text of the complete [to his knowledge]
prophecy from Llauron Mistover.
<Kheldar> Whellan, as Jannot finishes with relating the prophecy, you suddenly see in the room with the two of you an elderly elf. He has a look of pity on his face, and he stands next to Jannot, looking down at him, but not touching him.
<Sareth> Whellen seems
to stare off past Jannot for a moment, then seems to nod
his head resignedly.
<Sareth> "I'd say you've been touched. I fear
very much, in fact, that you have become the focus of
much."
<Kent> Jannot screws
up his face a little, " 'I've become the focus of
much'. What do you mean? If you're referring to the
gods... Yeah, I noticed. But the reason behind it?"
<Sareth> Whellen
laughs.
<Kent> Now, that
surprises Jannot.
<Sareth> "I'm
sorry. I hardly meant to mock your plight! It's not easy
being touched by a god." Whellen's face turns somber
for a moment, then regains a bit of it's nonchalance.
"To be touched by two or three gods is a very
difficult thing. I don't know why you have been chosen,
but you've a role to play."
<Sareth> Whellen thinks a moment.
<Kent> Jannot stand
and walks around a little...
<Sareth> "Tell
me. You say a new king or god rules in Zuqar. Do you know
more of him?"
<Kent> Jannot stops
walking. "Is it safe to say names? I'm kinda new to
the god thing and wouldn't want theis attention."
<Kheldar> With new
gods the mere mention of their name might not draw
attention, but prolonged focus of attention COULD.
Although usually only if there is some sense of...
devotion attached.
<Sareth> "It
should be safe enough, so long as we don't belabor the
issue. Tell me something of him. Do you have anything of
his?"
<Kent> Jannot nods.
'alright. Kyten. I believe that the elves were run out of
Zuqar and the plague hit because of a power grasp for
Kyten and his ... puppet king."
<Sareth> So a new
power rises in Zuqar... harming the old."
<Sareth> Whellen thinks again.
<Kent> "Wait, you
said earlier that I shouldn't return to Zuqar. If you
didn't know of this Kyten, then why else would I need to
stay away?"
<Sareth> "Hmm?
Oh! That wasn't directed at you, or so I thought. Qaran
warned me not to go to Zuqar on my way to Miraj. it
seems, however, that he may have meant it as much for
you, or even more so. In fact, "Whellen nods with
conviction, " I believe that message was most
certainly for you."
<Sareth> Whellen thinks for a moment.
<Sareth> "What are your plans? You fled Zuqar,
but where were you going?"
<Kent> Jannot getting
a bit frustrated again, sits on the bed.
<Kent> "I didn't have any flaming plans. I
just needed to get away. We came here, Celeste and I,
because she has family here."
<Sareth>
"Celeste?"
<Kent> Jannot
chuckles. "What? Oh yes, Celeste. I met Celeste
after returning to Zuqar, having fled from the city
during the plague. I kind of rescued her... but anyway,
her family had been killed by the plague and she had
nowhere else to go. I let her stay with me. I guess we
just decided that we do better together than
separate." Jannot smiles.
<Kent> "Yes, and she also returned the favor
of rescue. That puppet king was going to have me put to
death, but Celeste managed to bribe a Guard into leading
me out."
<Sareth>
"Partnership is always a good thing. An aid on the
journey." Whellen stands and approaches Jannot,
placing a hand on his shoulder. "I need some time.
Wait for me here."
<Kent> "Um, okay.
How much time?"
<Sareth> [what time is
it?]
<Kheldar> It's early
to mid morning.
<Sareth> "I'll be
back before the bells call for dinner."
<Kent> "Dinner?
All day then? If that's the case, " Jannot stands,
"I'm going to get back to check... wait... is there
a reason that I shouldn't try to find out more about the
prophecy and whatever is happening?"
<Sareth> Whellen
thinks.
<Sareth> "I don't know if the new power has
reached this far. Your efforts may reveal much, or may
attract attention. If you feel you must seek out further
knowledge, I won't forbid it. Perhaps it may do some
good. Meet me here before dinner."
<Kent> Jannot nods and
moves to let the fellow out.
<Sareth> Whellen moves
on past Jannot, pausing at the door. "be
careful." he then moves on out and down the hall.
<Kheldar> So, what are
Whellan's plans.
<Sareth> Oh. basically
he plans to head to the beach and meditate and pray. he's
arrived where he was told, and now he needs to see if he
can figure out the next step.
<Kheldar> Ok, and
Jannot?
<Kent> Jannot will
assume his prior direction: hit those two book shops - if
they're still there. Seeing as it's still early. :)
<Kheldar> The first of
the two bookshops is indeed closed up. The small building
appears to be empty.
<Kent> Alrighty.
<Kheldar> The second
is actually run by a human.
<Kheldar> He doesn't claim to know who Llauron
Mistover is, but he does have a number of books of elvish
origin.
<Kent> Jannot will
browse through them for ... a little while to see if he
turns anything up.
<Kheldar> The two of
you look through his collection, but don't find anything
by Llauron.
<Kheldar> You do happen to spot what seems to be
a... reading primer. It's a little (but not much) above
Celeste's level...
<Kent> Oh... I'm glad
you mentioned it. Jannot will price it.
<Kheldar>
Unfortunately, it (like most of the books around) are
somewhat pricey. The man doesn't want to let it go for
anything less than 15 silver.
<Kheldar> ...and it's one of the cheaper ones... :)
<Kent> GADZOOKS!
Crap-a-roonie-dooonie
<Kent> Exactly how much money does Jannot have?
<Kheldar> close to 3
gold.
<Kent> And that book
would be... cost of living for how long??
<Kheldar> a third of a
month for a lesser lord... :)
<Kent> grr...
<Kheldar> This is NOT
a literate society ...
<Kent> Man, Jannot
can't talk him down for talk of his ... true love wanting
to learn to read and such not?
<Kheldar> [to blathe?]
<Kent> Heh... yeah,
that.
<Kheldar> Naw, he's
pretty firm on that price...
<Kent> Wow. Perhaps
Jannot should consider selling his other book...
<Kheldar> :) You might
get a decent amount, although recall that it's not in the
best shape, and missing the front chunk...
<Kent> right, but the
subject material is VERY unique...
<Kent> Anyway, reluctantly, Jannot will not buy the
book.
<Kheldar> Right.
<Kent> But before
leaving he will ask about the symbol.
<Kheldar> naw, it
doesn't look familiar to him.
<Kent> well... another
unfruitful search. Jannot is used to it by now. On his
way back to the inn, though, Jannot will walk by a couple
places that he knows there are heralds, to see if he
overhears any news. He's wondering about that Miraj Army
scout...
<Kheldar> You don't
hear any official news from the criers, but interestingly
enough...
<Kheldar> There are some new rumours flying
around...
<Kent> About Zuqar?
<Kheldar> Well, close.
<Kent> Oh crap...
<Kheldar> Word is that
a rather large group of armed and vicious wood elves came
suddenly upon Shershel from out of the jungle.
<Kent> what?? Oh man.
<Kheldar> The town has
supposedly been taken over. Perhaps sacked. Or perhaps
even is still holding out against a siege.
<Kent> Man, those guys
that he thought were idiots from before were right on...
<Kheldar> So, back to
the inn then?
<Kent> yeah. what time
is it now?
<Kheldar> It's getting
to be... oh, say mid afternoon.
<Kent> How long of a
walk is it to Jacid and Gina's?
<Kheldar> It'd not
real far. Pretty close.
<Kent> before the inn
then, Jannot will make a visit to Celeste.
<Kheldar> Ok,
Whellan...
<Kheldar> You head on down to the beach.
<Sareth> Yes.
<Sareth> I assume the shore is somewhat rocky in
nature?
<Kheldar> Well, more
so than down south by Zuqar. The land is a little more
rough in this area near Freehold.
<Sareth> Alright. I'll
slip off my boots and then remove a bowl from my gear.
Then wade cautiuously out into the water. Getting about
waist deep I'll duck the bowl under to fill it, then back
up onto the beach, never turning my gaze from the
horizon.
<Kent> so that's what
I did wrong...
<Kheldar> :)
<Sareth> Once on the
beach I sit crosslegged. I place the bowl in the crook
thus formed, dip my finger in the bowl, and suck the salt
water from the tip. Then, I meditate and pray.
<Sareth> "Lord of the waters. I have come as I
was bid, and found the man I sought. Yet the finding has
not made my paths any clearer. A great darkness
aproaches, a storm that burns all in it's path. Aid your
servant." Head bowed, he simply waits, clearing his
mind.
<Kheldar> You are
still for a long time. Eventually, you feel a faint sense
of satisfaction, no more. Then... a brief longing, and
then... nothing.
<Kent> Hm. Relith is
more talkative...
<Kheldar> :) nyah
nyah...
<Sareth> Whellen is
troubled by this, but not overly surprised.
<Sareth> "I will do my best, my Lord, until
the day you release me..."
<Sareth> With that he returns to the water, pours
the bowl out, and replaces it in it's place. Turning, he
heads back up on shore. As he heads back to the inn he
will listen to passersby and such, in the hopes of
hearing something from the travelers disembarking from
the ships.
<Kheldar> You would
presumably have actually spent some time in general
worship and such. Even without a direct response, this
would be common.
<Sareth> Of course.
<Kheldar> You don't
actually hear any significant news beyond some idle talk
about something odd happening to the south. Perhaps
there's war brewing, but no one knows details. There is
some discussion as well of elves holding some unknown
grudge against the Free Kingdoms, but it's really just
speculation.
<Sareth> Seems
unlikely. My travels indicate the jungle elves are more
likely to avoid trouble, and the city elves too tied in
to humans. Still, something to keep an ear on in the
future.
<Sareth> BTW, is there a temple of Qaran here?
<Kheldar> You have not
heard that there is a temple to Qaran here, although you
believe there is a small shrine up in Freehold.
<Kheldar> You are back at the inn before your
agreed time, and Jannot does not seem to be around.
<Sareth> I'll get a
room for the night then wait in the commons.
<Kheldar> Right.
<Kheldar> So, Jannot heads to Jacid and Gina's
shop/home.
<Kent> Yeah, Jannot
heads to Celeste's family's place.
<Kheldar> Jacid is
there in the shop working with his apprentices. He seems
somewhat surprised to see you at this hour.
<Kent> "Jacid,
Nice to see you. Is Celeste in?"
<Kheldar> "Yes,
she's inside helping Gina. You can go in." He seems
busy and doesn't really pay much more attention to you.
<Kent>
"Thanks." Jannot mutters as he enters.
<Kheldar> You find
Gina and Celeste.
<Kheldar> Celeste comes to greet you, while Gina
calls a greeting.
<Kheldar> Celeste says, "Is something wrong,
Jon? You seem... upset."
<Kent> He didn't want
to seem upset... He smiles, or tries to, "What, if I
come to see you early something must be wrong?" He
tries to joke. "can we talk somewhere?"
<Kheldar> She nods and
takes off her apron, wiping her hands. "We can go to
my room. Gina? We'll be right back."
<Kheldar> "Ok, dear." Comes the response.
<Kent> Good.
<Kheldar> The two of
you head back to Celeste's room.
<Kent> After the door
is closed, Jannot begins quietly recounting the strange
fellow, Whellan, that he met today. And then tells that
he's both seen the Miraj Army courier and heard that the
town of Shershel may have been overrun by the woodelves.
blustery, he'll sit down on... whatever is close.
<Kheldar> There's a
chair. The two of you do her lessons here.
<Kent> Oh. okay.
<Kheldar>
"Woodelves? Oh!" She covers her mouth briefly
with her hand. "Do you suppose... there's been a
plague there too?"
<Kent> Jannot is a
little taken a back, "Plague? that hadn't occured to
me. I suppose it's possible. I was more thinking that the
trouble that we feared was following us... is arriving
closer."
<Kheldar> "That's
what I'm saying... If Kyten caused the plague to start in
Zuqar, and then blamed things on the elves..."
<Kent> He thinks.
"True. This could be another cover up. I don't know
what to think Celeste. I mean, Miraj is a pretty big
city, and we might be safe is we remained..."
<Kheldar> "Zuqar
was... is a big city too..."
<Kent> and another
thought occurs to Jannot, "do you think that it was
actually woodelves that might have attacked Zuqar? Not
the grey elves that lived inside?"
<Kent> this realization changes things for Jannot.
<Kheldar> "The
grey elves? Jannot, I never saw any fighting with
elves..."
<Kent> "Right,
but that was the story that was circulated after the
plague hit: that the city was attacked by elves."
<Kheldar> "I
don't think the woodelves had anything to do with either
case. When we were in Shershel, the woodelves and humans
seemed to get along just fine."
<Kent> Jannot takes a
breath. "You're right. Of course. so this could be
just another lie then."
<Kheldar> She's quiet
for a moment, thinking.
<Kheldar> "We're... we're going to have to
keep moving... aren't we." she says, somewhat...
resignedly.
<Kent> Jannot doesn't
know what to reply. "I'm afraid. Whellan is lkely
right. There seems to be a great amount of... attention
on me. ME! as an individual. By these gods. They seem to
be fighting over something. And somehow, I'm ... I don't
know."
<Kheldar> After a
pause, Celeste asks, "Whellan... where did you say
he was from?"
<Kent> "He told
me that Qaran guided him here to find me from
Choco."
<Kheldar> "And
you said he DIDN"T go through Zuqar on his
way?"
<Kent> He nods.
"He said that he was led to avoid Zuqar."
<Kheldar> She seems
somewhat taken aback.
<Kent> Jannot is
holding his head in his hands, elbows on knees.
<Kheldar> "Do you
realize that in order to do that he would have had to
leave... probably even before we decided to leave
Zuqar..."
<Kent> Jannot looks
up. "Hadn't considered that." his brow furrowed
a little. "hmm."
<Kheldar> "Is he
a priest of Zuqar or something?"
<Kent> Jannot crosses
his arms on his chest. "You know, I didn't think to
ask. Though, he wasn't dressed like a priest. He did
refer to him as his Lord, though."
<Kheldar> She
hesitates, then asks, "Do you trust him? What if...
he's pretending to be from Qaran in order to get close to
you?"
<Kent> Jannot smiles.
"I spoke with him in the street a little and then
led him back to my apartment. Afterwards we talked for
quite a little while. I'm sure that if he were going to
kill me, he'd have done it then. He was armed, and I was
not."
<Kheldar> "I
suppose... but what if they want to capture you instead
of kill you now?"
<Kent> Jannot stops.
thinks. "You know, you could be right. It does seem
like the gods need me for something. Perhaps they need me
to be alive for whatever it is... though, he's not really
given me a good reason to distrust him."
<Kheldar> "Please
be careful Jannot. Perhaps you should wear your sword
more often."
<Kent> He looks down.
"with the gossip going around, I suppose that it
wouldn't be all that out of place either. I'll do that.
So... I suppose that you don't want to meet him just yet
then?" he smiles just a little.
<Kent> "I told him of your rescue of me. All
the good stuff." He says with just a little levity.
<Kheldar> She smiles.
"Of course I want to meet him. As long as you're
there too. Naturally."
<Kent> Jannot stands.
"Okay then. He said that he needed to go do some
things and he'd meet me back at the inn around dinner
time. Perhaps we three could eat dinner at my inn."
<Kheldar> She nods,
and then looks at you, kind of out of the corner of her
eye. "So, you're inviting me over to your place
then?"
<Kheldar> She grins.
<Kent> Thankfully,
Jannot registers a little surprise and then laughs a bit.
"I assure you, my lady that it's with all honor that
I invite you for dinner." But the lighter mood wears
thin quickly.
<Kheldar> Right.
<Kheldar> Enough talk then?
<Kent> Yeah.
<Kheldar> Ok, She
explains to Gina that the two of you are headed off to
dinner.
<Kent> Jannot will
pleasantly apologize for taking her hard worker out so
early.
<Kheldar> You are soon
on your way, her hand on your arm.
<Kheldar> So, Jannot and Celeste stop by the common
room first to see if Whellan has shown up already? Or
will you head up and get your sword first?
<Kent> Common Room.
Nothing of note on the walk there right? People jumpy?
<Kheldar> Not
particularly so.
<Kent> okay, Common
room.
<Kheldar> Right.
Whellan notices Jannot and a woman come in, and the two
move over to join him at a table.
<Kheldar> Whellan, when you first get a glimpse of the woman, you see her cupped in a giant pair of hands.
<Sareth> Whellen rises
to greet them.
<Kent> Jannot makes
the introductions, "Whellan, celeste. Celeste,
Whelan..."
<Kheldar> Celeste
holds out her hand for Whellan.
<Kheldar> Whellan, she is definitely of the pretty
sort...
<Sareth> Whellen takes
her hand, but seems to pause silent, as if looking at her
seeking... something.
<Sareth> [Had to think of the right, nutral phrase.
Don't want someone geting jealous. =D]
<Sareth> After a moment he releases her hand.
"Celeste. he speaks well of you."
<Sareth> He sits.
<Kheldar> Celeste
turns and grins at Jannot.
<Kent> Jannot returns
a half smile.
<Kent> Pulling out a chair for her and then sitting
himself, Jannot says, So, you said that you had to go do
something. Were you... successful in whatever you were
doing?"
<Sareth> "What I
was doing?" he smiles wistfully. "I went to
pray."
<Kent> Jannot look
saround for the waitperson, wanting to order some dinner
and wine.
<Kheldar> You guys
order something to eat as the conversation progresses.
<Sareth> "Qaran
is pleased, it seems. We have bought some time, I think.
But it is up to us to use it best."
<Sareth> "And what have you learned?
<Kent> "I heard
around and about that there is a ... serious problem
rasing up from the south. From Shershel
specifically."
<Kent> "The woodelves, or so I heard, attacked
or over run, or are beseiging the city. Seems a bit far
fetched. Likely a cover story."
<Kheldar> Celeste nods
slightly in agreement.
<Sareth>
"Woodelves attacking? That is not their way. They
prefer to hide from the dangers we present. Still, we
must be careful." Whellen seems to pause, as if
consulting a map in his head.
<Sareth> "Shershel... a few days north of
Zuqar... Could it be..." [muttered]
<Kent> After eating a
while, Jannot speaks up. "Listen Whellan, I know
that you're purportedly here to... protect me. Or perhaps
even guide. I don't know. But we just wanted to ... find
a house, settle down... and. Just live our flaming
lives." a pause. "Is that even possible?"
Jannot is frustrated, but he's not loud.
<Sareth> "I'm
sorry. I can understand your unhapiness, perhaps more
than you could know. It isn't easy, what some of us are
called to do. if it reassures you any, understand that I
believe you are meant to be together, whatever the path.
But a place to live, and have normal lives? About that, I
cannot make any promises."
<Kent> Jannot looks to
Celeste and tries to shrug an apology.
<Kheldar> Actually,
Celeste...very lightly moved her arm (shoulder) against
yours during Whellan's speaking, as if to remind you that
she's there next to you. When you look to her. She looks
back, giving you a look of complete trust.
<Sareth> "I worry
that whatever is happening at Shershel may be related to
your problems. It is possible that our foe is seeking you
there. It is possinble that I'm simply drawing things out
of the darkness to suit my own fears. But I fear we can't
take the chance it is innocent. You may have to prepare
to travel again."
<Kheldar> Celeste
gives a small sigh.
<Kent> Jannot looks at
Whellan and says, "What are you anyway? Are you a
priest of some sort?"
<Sareth> Whellen
smiles ruefully. "A priest? No. Simply a follower
called onto a different path than most."
<Kent> Jannot sighs.
"So I likely won't be climbing the ranks to head
librarian soon then?" He's only joking a little. He
was looking forward to working...
<Sareth> Whellan
pauses a second, an odd look on his face, then throws his
head back and roars with laughter.
<Kent> "Hey, it
wasn't that funny..."
<Sareth> "Yes, of
course. You are right." Whellen fights to remove a
rebelious upswing of his lips.
<Sareth> "I'm sorry" he says, after
regaining control. "I'm afraid librarian is not in
your immidiate future."
<Kent> "Oh? So,
what IS in my immediate future?" Jannot asks a bit
skeptically.
<Sareth> Whellen
thinks for a moment.
<Kent> that's when
Jannot remembers what that ... ship crewman mentioned
about seeing troops moving... and relays it to Whellan.
<Sareth> "This
may not long be a safe haven for us. If Shershel, is
indeed under siege, or even fallen, to forces that oppose
us, it may be that the force is even now moving to find
us. Lagan may be next, then Miraj. I'm afraid that there
may be a journey ahead of us."
<Sareth> Whellen thinks for a moment. "That
seems to add emphasis to my fears." he thinks a
moment longer, then nods as if coming to a decision.
"There is a small shrine to Qaran in Freehold. it
may be we can seek his advice. Perhaps... we can use an
oracle. Will you travel with me there?"
<Kent> Jannot groans a
little. "And my wounds were healing up so
nicely..."
<Sareth> "Have
some hope. Sometimes one finds in travel and partnerships
gifts, sent to us from the gods... It may be so
here."
<Kent> Jannot looks at
Whellan, "Tell me this. What am I being sought for?
You keep saying that I've been touched, chosen. What
exactly does this entail?"
<Sareth>
"Well..." Whellen smiles. "It seems, my
friend, that you are the child of prophecy."
<Kent> Jannot rolls
his eyes and places his face in his hands...
<Kent> "go on..." he mutters.
<Sareth> "I don't
know that I can. You know as much as I. How did that go?
'Three wings together, from sea to air to land?" He
pauses a second. "Who seeks the fathers sons?"
<Sareth> Whellen pauses a second, as though seeing
something past you.
<Sareth> "The fathers sons..."
<Kent> Jannot looks
up, "Are you asking me? Because I cartainly don't
know."
<Sareth> "So it
goes with prophecy."
<Sareth> "We may learn more in Freehold."
<Kent> "Are the
sons, the new gods? and maybe the father being Az?"
<Sareth> Whellen looks
at Jannot. "I suppose it's possible, but I don't
truly know."
<Sareth> Whellen turns to Celeste. "You, also,
seem tied to this. What do you think?"
<Kheldar> She seems a
little taken aback.
<Kheldar> "I can't claim to really know what's
happening. All I know is that Jon seems to be a key part
of something important. I plan to help him in whatever
way I can."
<Sareth> Whellen
smiles. "Yes, Celeste. I think you will be of great
help to Jon indeed."
<Kheldar> After a
brief pause in the conversation here, Celeste speaks
again.
<Kheldar> "Whellan must have some part to play
in this as well. Somehow he knew where to meet us before
we'd even decided to leave." She nudges Jannot
slightly.
<Kent>
"Yes..." Jannot grudgingly agrees.
<Sareth> Whellen sits
quietly, just watching.,
<Kent> Jnnot looks to
Celeste. "I hate to have to take you away from your
family. You know, if you wanted... you could stay with
them. But..."
<Kheldar> "You...
...I..." she hesitates, then.
<Kent> Jannot smiles a
little.
<Kheldar> "Don't
worry about that. You have more worthy things to
consider."
<Kent> Jannot nods.
<Sareth> "Never
discount the advice of a good woman, Jon."
<Kent> Jannot raises
his eyebrow to Whellan. "Alright then. I guess...
Freeold is our new target then."
<Sareth> "Then it
is agreed!" Whellen stands. "I'll give you two
some time alone." And he heads to his room.
