Illustrated by Gustave Dore
In 1785 Rapse published Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvelous
Travels and Campaigns in Russia based in part on the hunting stories
of the real Baron Hieronymus Karl Friedrich Munchausen.
The real Baron Munchausen disappoved of the boastful lies attributed to him and died in grief at being considered the world's biggest boaster. The name Munchausen is now used to describe an exaggerator or boaster. The first booklet was a huge success and was followed by many more stories. These have been collected into various editions of Baron Munchhausen of which all the stories may not have been by Raspe. QVP's edition is taken directly from the 1880's edition published by Cassell Publishing Company of New York, NY. This edition in turn is a direct copy of the 1881 edition by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. of London, England (except for the title page). This edition contains 8 illustration, 31 plates (including frontis), and 115 vignettes from the orginals done by Gustave Dore. The cover is from the frontis of this edition and has been colored and enhanced by Keri Schaeffer.
