Buddhism
Founded by Gautama Buddha (560 BCE - 460 BCE). A prince who renounced his position to seek enlightenment, he is also known as Shakyamuni "the sage from the tribe of the Shakyas."Some basic concepts include karma, samsara, and nirvana. Many worshippers seek the intercession of bodhisattvas, spirit beings who may assist mortals on the path to salvation.
The major sects include Hinayana, Mahayana, and Therevada. The stupas (temples) are often ornamented to illustrate points of faith, important gods and other figures, and other educational and edifying concepts.
This primacy is in charge of the Buddhist religion outside China.
