Daoism/Taoism

While perhaps tied to earlier traditions, the Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu is the foundation of Daoism/Taoism, in the 6th century BCE. The priesthood was involved in directing the personal salvation of the immortal soul of the penitent, performing rituals including magical elements, and working for social equilibrium.

From a well-structured website:

The Taoist philosophy can perhaps best be summed up in a quote from Chuang Tzu:

"To regard the fundamental as the essence, to regard things as coarse, to regard accumulation as deficiency, and to dwell quietly alone with the spiritual and the intelligent -- herein lie the techniques of Tao of the ancients.

The Ling-Pao and Mao-Shan sects began in the 4th century CE and seem to have revitalized Daoism after the purges and warfare of the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Borrowings from Confucian and Buddhist traditions helped to keep Daoist thought active and relevant to this day.
