Donatist ChristianA Christian variant, these broke with the Roman Church in 312, over the issue of the bishop of Carthage. Their candidate was Donatus (d. 355 AD), hence the name.They were ascetics generally, and valued martyrdom and had little sympathism for moderates. Belief in the need for "pure" clergy put them at odds with most Greeks and Latins, yet found fertile ground in North Africa. They were not surprised to be oppressed through much of the 4th C., and probably saw it as justification of the rightness of their creed. Among their followers were faithful peasant warriors, the Circumcellians, who helped enforce orthodoxy in the countryside. For more information see (also Cyprian, Caecilian):
