Hinduism

The roots of the Vedic religion came to India with the Indo-European invasions in the late 2nd millenium BCE. The four Vedas, the Rigveda, the Yajurveda, the Samavada, and the Atharvaveda, are the ancient texts at the base of religious practice.

Our period sees the penning of several of the greatest of these scriptures, and sacrifice was integrated into a more theistic religion, a devotional form. Thus a more organized, slightly centralized faith came into being. The three most important sects were Vaishnavism, Saivism, and Saktism. The ancient city of Varanasi was a center of Hindu learning.

The most obvious cultural expressions are familiar outside South Asia as caste, dietary restrictions, and various processions and festivals. Hindu religion and some customs spread widely in this period throughout Southeast Asia through missionaries and merchants, while at the same time successfully competing with Buddhism and Jainism at home.
