Tang Chinese Steppe Falconer at Court

A Twilight of Empires

Lords of the Earth, Campaign 13

Yamato Japan

In Chinese characters, the rulers of the Yamato court were called kimi. Archaeologically this is the "Tomb Period," when circular and trapezoidal burial chambers (kofun) were constructed.

From 369 CE armies in the Islands and even a Korean expedition in 391 CE marked the increased power of the dynasty. This was in part based on improved agriculture and more iron tools, a transfer of technology from trade with the Mainland.

Myth, legend, and artifacts point to a strong Korean political influence at this time, perhaps even leading to a dynastic change by the end of the 5th century. This is the naissance of the later Japanese military aristocracy, "samurai roots," as it were.
