Paying Your Troops

While regular pay is nice, there are other ways of inducing people to fight harder in the war. Extra pay is always appreciated, and less is not, and may lead to mutiny.

In terms of pay variants, here is the way of war:

Difference from base pay

Combat effect

at least 200% more

+2 bonus

at least 100% more

+1 bonus

up to 20% less

-1 penalty

up to 50% less

-2 penalty

Troops ordered to Loot, Raid, or Sack City at some time during the turn, even if it does not come to pass, are willing to fight with less (or perhaps no) pay. For bold generals, the risk may well be worth it. Try bidding for mercenaries this way and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Not paying troops what they expect as a minimum is, as shown above, not appreciated. In fact, lack of prompt salary will result in the GM making a mutiny check. In other LOTE campaigns this would instead lead to the unpaid units simply disappearing, so consider this a kinder option.
