The Burl Source

As you can see from the announcement below I have retired from the wood selling end of the business.  I will continue to pursue my artwork and for those of you interested in my work this is still the place to see it.  The site will be modified in the upcoming weeks to better accommodate my pictures.

Last Update: April 24, 2008

The phone number 1-801-942-2616 will be discontinued April 30th, I can be reached at 1-801-942-2877 after that time.  Thanks.

A VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:  Feb 15th 2008

As many of you may know, about a year ago I had back surgery. While the surgery and my ongoing recovery have gone very well, my intense desire to never go through that again (as well as the doc's recommendation) has led me to a decision to liquidate the remaining stock of The Burl Source.  A couple from Burns, Oregon...Rob Doyle and his wife Donna are going to purchase all my remaining stock.  On Friday the 15th of February 2008, they will start moving material from here to its new home in Burns, Oregon and operate under the name Bad Dogs Burl Source.  Visit their website at www.burlsource.com   They can also be contacted at burls@customwoodart.net   Initially they will import many of the pictures of burls from my site to theirs,  but you can purchase from me as usual until the Friday, Feb.15th.  I will maintain a link to their site, and I will forward your phone requests to them.  Donna and Rob are in contact with most of the suppliers that I have used in the last 7 years and will be able to provide the same wonderful burls, from the domestic box elder, and  black ash to the fabulous Aussie burls. I'm told that they will offer myrtle and big leaf maple burl as well.  Donna and Rob are young and enthusiastic about this endeavor, and I'm sure that you'll find them a pleasure to work with...I encourage you to support them, you will not be disappointed!

I cannot express what a pleasure it has been meeting and serving my woodworking friends for these past years.  I have enjoyed trying to help you find ways to best complete your projects and have especially enjoyed talking to you on the phone and hearing about your concerns and triumphs.  I will continue to pursue my artwork......and would love to hear from some of you from time to time...and if you have any questions,  my door is always open.

 Thanks for everything!

Follow up:  Feb. 16

Rob, Donna and the 2 hounds showed up late Friday afternoon and while we began loading their trailer and truck the pups ran and played in the deep snow and hills in our back yard.  After a dinner of pizza and beer we decided to call it a night and start again in the morning.  We completed loading of the truck and trailer about noon on Saturday and Rob and Donna have started on their way back to Oregon.    Do yourselves a favor and drop these guys a line and see if they can help your ideas become reality....you'll be glad you did.

Burls everywhere are subject to varying degrees of degradation, whether its decay or bark inclusions.  My burl caps sometimes display  these traits, however almost without exception,  these stressed burls will yield some of the most exciting burl patterns and color variations imaginable.  Check out the evolution of a particularly stressed  piece on the Burl Quality page. Then follow up with the pages on the Tools and Process as I show step by step, the making of a sculpted bowl.
