  Harvesting the Burls

Ever wonder how they harvest this stuff?  The 5th, 6th 7th and 8th  pictures are from our supplier in Tasmania, Australia showing the collection of the Eucalyptus burl after the major logging companies have clear cut the area.  The second third and fourth show a "baby" red gum burl.   The last six were taken in the Goldfield Region of Western Australia, and as you can see the harvesting process is much different...except for the chainsaw!

But a common thread is that burl collectors in Australia are not in any way harming the environment!

Some people would have loaded the truck differently!  This is how NOT to do it.  Check out the pictures below of the REAL guys harvesting burls.  Sometimes its just better to let the pros do it!

How to unload!!

Finally..an Aussie breadboard!!!

Now this looks like fun!!!

The long climb up from the burl.  The picture was taken from the location of the burl...the orange near the hoe are the guys climbing out!

As you can see they are harvesting the "left overs" Logging companies previously harvested the trees and most are reduced to pulp and sent to Japan to make paper products.

Now the LONG walk out! 300 meters through the slash to the vehicles....and it was 95 degrees!

Responsible burl harvesting, in the Goldfield region of Western Australia.    Here the burls are cut from the sides of the trees leaving the host tree unharmed.

There is more than one way to get a burl in the bush!

Harvesting in the Goldfield region.  Note...the tree is unharmed and left to grown new burls!

Someday these will be harvested, but for now they get to see another day! Salmon gum.
