Unable to run or error with downloaded file.

Issue:

Unable to run or error with downloaded file.

Cause:

You may be unable to run or may receive an error with a file downloaded from the Internet or BBS because of any of the below possibilities.

  1. Other software or TSR causing program to crash when run.
  2. Required utility not installed to run or open file.
  3. File became or was corrupt when downloaded.

Solution:

Other software or TSR causing program to crash when run

Verify that no open software or TSRs are open when attempting to run or open the file. Other programs may cause the file to abort abnormally. Additional information on how to End Task all TSRs can be found on document CHTSR.

Required utility not installed to run or open file

Verify that the file you are attempting to load has all necessary software to run. Some programs may require additional programs to read or run the file downloaded. Below is a listing of commonly downloaded programs and what is required to run those files.

*.AVI Requires a movie player, Windows 95 and above comes preinstalled with a Windows Media player capable of playing these files.
*.EXE These files should run automatically and require no other additional software.
*.GIF This is an image file and requires an image program to open these files. Most browsers are also capable of opening these files.
*.MOV
*.MPG
Requires a movie player such as QuickTime to play these files.
*.MP3 MPEG layer 3 music file, requires an audio program such as Winamp to play these files.
*.RA
*.RAM
Real Audio file, requires Real Audio or Player.
*.ZIP or *.ARJ These files are compressed archives and require a third-party decompression utility to access the contained files.

All the above mentioned programs can be found through our recommended download section

File became or was corrupt when downloaded

When a file is downloaded it is possible for the file (especially when large files are downloaded) for that file to become corrupt or bad. Attempt to download the file again to ensure that this is not the case. If the same issue occurs, contact the web administrator of the web site verifying if the file is a known good file.

Note: All files on Computer Hope's download section have been tested and are known good files.
