Enable / disable
modem speaker.
Issue:Enable / disable modem speaker.
Cause:
Users may wish to enable their
computer modem speaker to help identify if the modem is connecting, or
disable their computer modem speaker to help remove the sometimes
annoying connection noise.
Solution:It is important to note that there are some computer modems that do
not contain a speaker and therefore will not emit sound if enabled /
disabled. Additionally, it is possible that a modem speaker may become
defective, and therefore will not be able to emit sound.
The below steps are for enabling / disabling the computer modem speaker
is for the onboard modem (internal) speaker. Some computers may have the
capability of emitting the sound through the computer speakers and
following the below steps may not enable / disable this as other
software may be involved.
Windows 95 and above users
To adjust the modem speaker follow the below steps:
- Open Control Panel - Click Start / Settings / Control Panel
- Open Modems - Double-click the modems icon
- Highlight the modem that you wish to adjust the volume and
click the Properties button (Note: do not click Dialing
Properties, click the Properties button).
- Within this window you should have the capability of adjusting
the volume, moving the volume adjustment all the way to the left
will turn off the speaker, moving it all the way to the right
will enable it at the highest volume.
DOS / Windows 3.x users
DOS / Windows 3.x users must enable / disable the modem speaker by
using the AT commands.
The commonly used AT command to set the speaker volume to low and
then turn it off once connected is: ATM1L1
If you wish to turn off the speaker you would use ATM0L1 or M0.
Generally, the above AT commands can be typed at a MS-DOS prompt or
through the terminal or dialing program. It is important to note that
not all modems support the above commands.
