Long filenames

Sometimes abbreviated as LFN, long filenames are computer file or directory names that was widely introduced to Microsoft users with the release of Windows 95. Long filename support longer names than the earlier DOS 8.3 format and allows PC computers using Microsoft Windows 95 and above to save and use files with names up to 255 characters in length.

Users running Unix variants, Linux variants, Mac OS and various other operating systems will already have long filename support, even before the initial release of Microsoft Windows 95.

  • Additional information and help on long file names can be found on document CH000209.
