This shows the Mozilla web browser running within the Gnome desktop environment. Mozilla is showing the start page for the popular wikipedia website. |
Gnome's top panel holds applets. The left panel shows what applications are running. The panels are user configurable. Gnome has four desktops to separate your work environment and "keep tidy." To switch desktops, click on the mini-icons on the bottom of the left panel Gnome is from GWARE because gnome was dropped from Slackware recently. If you would rather use Firefox as your browser, then that's on the DVD, too. Konqueror is also available, which is closely related to Macintosh's Safari web browser. There's no scarcity of choices. |

Gnome's file manager is nautilus. |
I like the style and general layout of the Gnome desktop. However, the file manager has some annoying features when using the default configuration. These faults can be corrected with some minor tweaking. This page describes the Gnome project. If you aren't thrilled with Gnome, then there's KDE. Version 3.5.3 is also included on the DVD. This explains the KDE project. If you don't like either of those windows managers, then there's even more choices. XFCE is another popular choice. |

k3b is a cd/dvd writing utility, designed for use within KDE. As you can see it will also look and work normally within Gnome. |

This shows the Gnome desktop with the Totem media player running to listen to a live ogg stream. |
Gnome themes are user configurable. I am partial to dropline-neu (shown here) and "unofficial" tango (shown below.) FYI: Viewing "trash" is broken with unionfs, used on live CD/DVDs. |

This shows the Gnome desktop with the Menu for "Desktop-Preferences" expanded. |
The gnome theme is "unofficial tango." |
