Kurt - Am no great fan of CVA, but have built 3 from kits that 
perform very well.  This was in the early 1980's - one still a "match 
winner" for a friend of mine.  Building the kits, I did have to do 
some work on the locks and triggers, but had no problems with 
mainsprings.  The barrels in all shoot well.  I am speaking of the 
Mt. Rifle that is no longer offered.  Just got a used one from the 
factory (price was right) and we'll see what it will do.  Perhaps CVA 
has "lessened in quality" in recent years?  Later,
