Merriam Webster's Tenth Edition lists their first recorded written use
of the word 'glycerin' in 1838. and 'glycerol' in 1884.
Glycerol is a byproduct produced when soap is made by treating fats and
oils with alkali. Glycerol is purified by distillation.
