Not quite. Though nearly impossible to split when cured; green elm is
readily riven into the finest, longest wearing, shingles. Most wagon hubs
were made of elm as when cured it seldom cracks and it can take extensive
exposure to water with minimal deterioration, expansion and contraction.
Now nearly as rare as chestnut.

Hickory is excellent - but - if max heat is what you want Osage Orange
(hedge apple, &c.) burns the hottest. Best to burn in a closed stove as it
pops hot coals all over the place.
Rive on the full moon lay on the new moon and always put fenceposts in the
