MtMan-List: gauge conversion

Does anyone have a standard formula that could be plugged into a spreadsheet
for converting gauge to caliber?

We tried to figure it out today based on the number of balls per pound of
lead using the diameter of a one pound ball as a constant.  Seems like it
gets into cube roots, etc. that I have long since forgotten.  I already know
some of the standard ones, but they are approximations, and sometime you need
to figure a non-standard bore.
