Re: MtMan-List: Packs
One thing to include in thinking about "packs" in history is this:
The voyagers had a system for moving bundles over portages that was
considered back when the goods were made into bundles in the first
place. They were bundled with portages in mind to a certain size,
shape and weight.. Packing of goods was a considered and developed
technique. The methods developed up north would not just translate to
the Rocky Mtn. situation, because generally when someone was in the
situation of having to carry their goods in the Rockies fur trade,
they were between mounts; they wern't trying to refine the packing
technique so much as they were trying to get remounted. The more
practiced proceedure was to cache and go look for a horse or three.
