MtMan-List: Pack Cloth

In looking over the "INventory of goods at the 1825 Rendezvous..." on 
Dean's website the next to last entry is "1  pack  pack cloths".
My question is were these pre-made pack cloths used to put gear into 
for pack animals and if so, were they made in a special way to denote 
special marking in the inventory list?  Any thoughts or comments?
Could these be adapted at all to use by man to pack gear around with?

I know this is pretty open ended but I'm intrigued.
