One note on the "bloody flux", it is also a commonly used colonial term, and was used in England from the earliest times. It was probably typhus likely caused by drinking bad water..however it is interesting to note that many diseases our ancestors suffered from are now extinct, thus we may never know the EXACT diagnoses.
