Intermountain Suzuki String Institute

This will be the 21st anniversary of the Intermountain Suzuki String Institute. It has grown to be one of the largest String Institutes in the western hemisphere, with over 1,000 participants.

Our 1999 Institute will be held at Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah. This is a state of the art facility in a beautiful location overlooking the south end of the Salt Lake Valley. Members of the Utah Symphony and other guest teachers from all over the U.S. and Canada will be joining us.

An Institute can offer a student and parent motivation that comes in no other way. Many are encouraged to work hard all year because of challenges and experiences they have in the classes. A week will be spent totally immersed in a musical environment with other families who are seeking the same goals. Everyone who comes to the Intermountain Suzuki String Institute once, comes back every year. Lifetime friendships have been made. We invite you to join us this summer!

Advanced String Camp

Now in its 10th year, the Advanced String Camp is certainly the highlight of our institute. Most participants are high school and junior high school students. This year 10 students will be joining us from the `Wieniawski, Music School` in Lodz Poland. Our camp is for both Suzuki graduates and traditional students who have reached the advanced concerto level. The camp is not a Suzuki program, so traditional students who meet the playing level requirements always feel comfortable participating. We would especially like to encourage traditional cello and viola students to attend, we have many good violinists to participate in quartets. Enrollment usually reaches 100 participants.

The daily schedule includes a one hour master class, shared between four students. These are taught by some of the finest musicians in the country. All students are placed in string quartets which meet daily. Students meet together daily, in groups to polish a few pre-selected pieces with the guest teachers (see p. 26-27). For many students this is their favorite class. Orchestra will be held for 15 hours during the week. Advanced String Camp students are especially encouraged to apply for the noon recitals. Social activities will be provided throughout the week. The Advanced String Camp starts a day earlier than the Suzuki Institute. For those who would like an away from home experience we recommend the teen dorm, even if you live in Salt Lake.
