Fly-fishing

October 12, 2008

Jans fly-fishing guides have fished the best lakes and streams, can pinpoint the hatches and have obtained exclusive access to some very special waters. A Jans guided trip provides the opportunity to fish a variety of lakes and ponds as well as miles of streams on private property closed to the public.

Upper Provo River - The Upper Provo is a small freestone stream that runs out of the Uinta mountains to the Jordanelle reservoir. This part of the Provo sees little pressure and is another ideal stream for a three weight rod. The river runs along highway 150 and is a very scenic drive. Artificial flies and lures are the only means of catching fish. Brook trout, browns and cuttthroat can all be found on this section of the Provo. As always, please respect private property.

River Level:
The river is flowing at about 98 cfs.

Hatchs:
Mornings an evenings have been great for pmds.

Fly Patterns:
Exteneded Body pmd 16-20

) Black Beauty 18-22
)Zebra Midge 20-22
)Rs2 Emerger 18-20
) Wooly Buggers olive or Brown 6-12
)

Fishing Techniques:
With the recent change in utah law there are alot of sections that are accessable! Dry dropper set ups should do the trick

Middle Provo River - The Middle Provo runs from Jordanelle reservoir through agricultural and grazing land prior to flowing into deer creek reservoir. There is a very healthy population of brown trout throughout this section with rainbows found closer to Charlston bridge and deer creek. Access can be found at a handful of recently improved parking areas that have bathrooms and garbage cans. Restoration projects are winding down and current information can be found at www.mitigationcommission.gov/prrp/prrp_report.html. With all the pressure, lets remember that there is etiquets to where you should fish and cross the river relative to other fisherman.

River Level:
The middle is flowing at 474 cfs.

Hatchs:
PMD's, Caddis and Yellow stones in certain sections

Fly Patterns:

Fishing Techniques:
nymphing the deep holes with good slow drifts will provide phenominal fishing. Work slow and consistant if you are not picking up fish switch up your rig.

Lower Provo River - The Lower Provo flows from Deer Creek Reservoir down Provo Canyon into Provo Utah and ends up in Utah Lake. For the most part the Lower runs parallel with highway 189 and has many easy access points, consequently fishing pressure can be heavy at times. Currently, there is road construction at Deer Creek dam that may cause some delays especially during the weekdays. The Provo Canyon section of the river holds predominantly brown trout with a fair number of rainbows and cutthroats. This section of the Provo holds many large trout in the 20 plus inch. As September approaches the boat hatch will come to an end. But keep your head up and step back as these rafters are not very good at steering the boats.

River Level:
436 cfs

Hatchs:
PMD's and Caddis

Fly Patterns:

Fishing Techniques:
The water has been dropped from about 800 cfs to 317. It should be fishing very well while the water remains low.

Green River - The Green River is a tailwater fishery that is a three hour drive from Park City and worth every minute of the drive. This fishery is one of the best in Utah and in the top 5 for trout rivers in the United States. The emerald green color of the water along with the steep red rock lined canyon makes floating this river a trip of a life time. The river is filled with large brown trout, rainbows cutthroat and hybrid cutthroat/rainbows. The river has three main sections that are fished regularly. There is the A section that can be footfished or floated, the B section is fished predominantly from a boat, while the C section can be floated or foot fished. The most consistent fishing is on the A and B section consequently these see the most pressure. As most of the tailwaters in Utah, the Green can be fished year round.

River Level:
Water levels are around 1500-1700 cfs throughout the day

Hatchs:
Cicadas!!! Beatles Its time to head to the green while the fishing is hot on top!

Fly Patterns:

Fishing Techniques:
Consistant action on top with terrestrials. See you on the river!

Weber River - The Weber River originates in the Uinta Mountains and flows into Rockport reservoir. Much of the upper Weber is private, including 9 miles on the 1000 Peaks Ranch, that Jan’s has exclusive rights to guide on. From Rockport, the river continues its journey through the town of Wanship, then to Echo reservior. From Echo the river continues along US84 into Ogden. The section between Rockport and Echo has numerous public access points. The Weber you will see predominantly brown trout and whitefish along with fair numbers of rainbows, cutthroats, and even brook trout in the Upper section.

River Level:
Currently flows from Rockport dam to Echo are at 192 cfs.

Hatchs:
Caddis and PMDs.

Fly Patterns:

)olive or tan Sow bugs 14-18
)Rubber Leg Prince 14-16
)Ray Charles 16
)Glass Bead Caddis Larva 16
)Caddis rock worm 16
)Parachute Adams 20,
)Black beauties 18-20
)Blood Midge 18-20
)Zebra midge 20-24 Streamers: Brown an Black wooly buggers # 6-10, Conehead double bunny #4-8,

Fishing Techniques:
Most of the fish will be taken below the surface dead drifting small nymphs with an indicator, or pitching streamers across larger wholes and swinging them downstream. When the hatches are heavy try a trailing caddis or midge emerger.

Currant Creek - Another great tailwater fishery within an hours drive of Park City. Currant Creek flows out of Current Creek reservior and is open year round if the road is accessable. The best times to fish are between June and September. A small stream that has many beaver ponds and sections with dense brush. A great three weight rod river. There are plenty of access point along the dirt road that runs next to the creek all the way up to the reservior. There are suprisingly big browns, cutthroats and some rainbows in this small creek.

River Level:
Currant creek flows are 33 cfs.

Hatchs:
Caddis and PMD's throughout the end of summer

Fly Patterns:
Zebra midge 18-22
) Black beauty 18-22
)Poxy Back Baetis 18-20
) Parachute Adams 16-20
) Bead head Bugger Brown & Black 6-8
) Stacked Caddis 14-18
) Hi-vis BWO 16-20
)

Fishing Techniques:
Usually a good place to avoid the crowds during weekdays. Evenings and early morning are fishing the best right now for dry flies. The dry dropper technique is the best when fish are not visibly feeding. If fish start coming up tie an emerger to the bend of the hook and have it trail 12" - 24" and watch your dry go under! Small stream tactics are needed to catch the big fish. Try to stay out of the water as much as possible.
