W
ith the exception of some metamorphic rock in the Grouse Creek mountians, much of the county is dominated by sedimentary rock.

Popular Locations

Location: Wellsville Mountains
Fossils:

trilobites and other fossils

Land Status: National Forest
Directions: The Spence Shale is exposed in Miners Hollow, Cataract Canyon, Dry Canyon, and the area from Antimony Canyon to Hansen Canyon. All of these areas will require a strenuous hike of over 1,000 feet of eleveation gain.
GPS: 41°35'41"N - 112°02'00"W (This is a road ending in Cataract Canyon.)

Location: Tecoma Hill
Minerals:

wulfenite, aurichalcite, aragonite

Land Status: Mining claims.
Directions: This location is reached from Montello, Nevada. North of Montello a dirt road heads southeast across the valley. Follow this for several miles and take a road to the left (north) that head toward the mines on a low hill at the foot of the range.

Location: Copper Mountain
Minerals:

chrysocolla, copper-bearing clays, cuprite, native copper

Land Status: Copper Mountain is at the head of the canyon that begins at Tecoma Hill.
Directions: Mining claims.

Location: Sardine Summit
Fossils:

fish

Land Status: Highway right-of-way and National Forest.
Directions: This is along the west side of the road at Sardine Summit near the Highway Dept. maintenence shed on U.S. 89-91 from Brigham City to Logan.
Note: Collecting of vertebrate fossils is restricted and requires a permit. Check with Forest Service or State Paleontologist.

Location: Rozel Point
Minerals:

gypsum

Land Status: Rozel Point is located on the headland west of Promontory Point. It is reached by driving to the Golden Spike historic site and following secondary roads southwest and south.
Directions: BLM.

Location: Deweyville
Fossils:

brachiopods, corals

Land Status: National Forest. Access through private property.
Directions: Access is through private property and across the irrigation canal east of Deweyville.
GPS: 41°42'39"N - 112°04'47"W (approx.)

Location: Dove Creek Pass
Minerals:

garnet, staurolite

Land Status: Highway right-of-way and private land.
Directions: Dove Creek Pass lies on the road from Rosette to Lynn, west of Utah Highway 30 in the extreme northwest part of the state. Deposits occur in the roadcuts around the pass.

Location: Ingham Pass
Minerals:

kyanite

Land Status: BLM and private lands.
Directions: Secondary roads from Utah Highway 30 on the east and from Grouse Creek Valley on the west lead up to the pass.

Location: Pilot Range
Minerals:

andalusite (var. chiastolite)

Land Status: BLM lands
Directions: The deposits are in metamorphosed rocks on the east side of the Pilot Range. A road leads south from Lucin along this side of the range.
