oasting a large variety of fossils including plants, ammonites, and oysters. Agates are also quite abundant in certain rock units as well as a variety of intersting minerals.

Location: Willow Springs
Rock:

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: From the intersection of Utah Highway 10 and i-70 south of Emery, take the graded dirt road (on the south side of the interchange) east for 1.5 miles then go south about 9 miles. There is a pond on the right side which may be dry in the summer. Agate is found in this area.

Location: West of Green River
Rock:

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Go west from Green River to the junction of I-70 and Utah Highway 24. In the immediate area of the junction, west of Highway 24, agate can be found.

Location: Summerville Wash Area

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: From Woodside, on U.S 6-50 south of Price, go about 5 miles south and take a gravel road west under the railroad. Travel about 3 miles into the hills and search in that area.

Location: Grassy Wash Area

Land Status: BLM and highway right-of-way.
Directions: Located 0.4 miles south of Grassy Wash, 11.2 miles south of the Carbon-Emery county line, and 5.6 miles north of Woodside on U..S. 6-50. Search the road cuts on both sides of the road.

Location: Head of Buckhorn Wash

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: The Buckhorn Wash road leaves Utah Highway 10 about 8 miles south of Huntingdon. Turn east on the road and follow it across Castle Valley (about 15 miles) until it starts to descend Buckhorn Wash to the campground on the San Rafael River. Search the left side of the road at the head of the wash.

Location: South of Castle Dale

Rock: jasper, agate
Land Status: BLM.
Directions: These fossils occur over a broad area. Examine the area south and east of Castle Dale behind the power plant and under the power lines running from the plant.

Note: Recent reports from someone in the field indicate that the road in this area has been gated and is no longer accessable. If anyone has any info on nearby access to this formation, please feel free to use the feedback link.

Location: Straight Canyon

Land Status: National Forest
Directions: Go west from the Orangeville-Castle Dale area on U-29 toward Joes Valley Reservoir. The Blackhawk formation forms the walls of Straight Canyon beginning about one mile past the turnoff to Cottonwood Creek. Plant fossils can be found at the abandoned Black Diamond coal mine about midway between milepost 8 and 9; also at the gully north of the road near milepost 8, and at Cox Swale a small canyon on the south side of the canyon about 0.4 mile past milepost 8.

Location: The Squeeze

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: This is reached from the westbound lane of I-70 about 2.5 miles west of the interchange with U-24 to Hanksville. The turnoff is a gravel road passing through a gate in the interstate fence between the "Rest Area 1 mile" sign and the rest area itself. Once through the gate, pass under the interstate to outcrops of the Curtis formation south of I-70, or take the fork to the right and drive about 0.3 miles to the bluff near the north side of the interestate. Specimens are abundantly scattered on the ground.

Location: Tidwell Draw

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Turn west off U.S. 6 about 4 miles north of the intersection with I-70 on a BLM road marked by signs indicating Tidwel Draw and Buckmaster Reservoir. Follow the signs toward Tidwell Draw and pass under the power line through a gate in the fence. About 0.25 mil past the gate, park and search the sandstone ledges below the red shaly unit.

Location: Greasewood Draw

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Proceed south from I-70 on U-24 toward hanksville. After crossing the San Rafael River, about 5 miles south of the interstate, turn west on a gravel road just south of milepost 156. Greasewood Draw is the broad wash leading west to the San Rafael Reef.
