Drive south from Hanksville on Utah Highways 95 and
276 toward Ticaboo and Bullfrog. Continue 0.8 mile beyond milepost
19 to a junction with a sign "Star Springs Recreation Area".
Go north 5 miles to a junction and turn west toward Clay Point. 6.4
miles further is another junction, stay to the right and continue
for approximately 2 miles to the next drainage which is Hansen Creek.
Go down to drainage and collect in this area. |

Go about 4.5 miles south of Panguitch, turn
east and cross a wooden bridge leding to Casto Canyon. Proceed 3 miles,
passing through a gate, and into a valley. A hill on the south side
of the road is known as Agate Hill. |

From the east edge of Escalante drive 10
miles on Utah highway 12 and watch for the scenic overlook of the
Escalante River. A half mile past the overlook take the dirt road
to the right with a sign indicating "Spencer Flat". Take
this road 5 miles to Spencer Flat and drive out onto the flat for
1.5 miles to where the main road makes a right angle turn and heads
twoard the cliffs on the south edge of the flat. Concretions appear
along the road in this area. |

Drive south from Antimony for 1.75 miles
and turn left at the sign marked "Antimony Creek". Three
miles from the junction you will enter the Dixie National Forest.
Drive up Antimony Creek for 1.75 miles to an unimproved 4WD road taking
off to the right. Go up this road to the second branch to the right
(about 0.5 mile), turn right and follow for 0.5 miles to the Emma
Mine. |

Turn south at the Moqui Motel in Escalante
and drive 4.6 miles along an improved gravel road to the mouth of
Coal Bed Canyon which is on the right. Walk up the canyon and check

Take the Burr Trail from Boulder for 6.5
miles to Deer Creek. Continue for 4 miles to Long Canyon and up the
canyon to the Long Canyon overlook. Two miles past the overlook turn
right at a junction which says "Petrified wood 12, Burr Trail
34". Continue for 4.5 miles to Horse Canyon Wash which enters
from the right. Drive up the wash about 1 mile to the base of the
cliffs. 4WD recommended for the drive up the wash. |

Escalante River. Agates are found near the right side of the fence
and cattle guard. Go north for 19 miles to Blue Spruce campground.

The location is reached by going south on
the Hole in the Rock road, after leaving Escalante, for about 3 miles
and taking a road to the right(south), crossing the wash, and continuing
about 3.5 miles. The site is on a ridge about 0.9 miles southeast
of this point. The outcrop area is less than an acre and can be difficult
to locate. |

The Tropic Shale is best exposed in the
area from the base of the Bryce Canyon escarpment west of Tropic to
several miles east of Henrieville. The west and north slopes are accessible
from U-12. Also a road leading south and east out of Henrieville goes
around the south end of the mesa and accesses the area. |

From Hanksville, drive south on highway
95 for 20.4 miles to a dirt road on the right. Take this road for
3.7 miles to a fork. Go right for 0.6 miles to another fork and a
BLM sign. Take the left fork for 3 miles. This is a rough road and
4WD is required. Here you will see a small red hill on your right
and a large red and purple striped hill to the south on your right.
The petrified wood is behind the small hill. The coprolites are around
the back of the large hill. |

From Hanksville, drive south on highway
95 about 26 miles. About 0.1 mile before the intersection with highway
276, an unmarked dirt road goes to the right. Follow this 3.1 miles
toward the cliffs to a fork. There is material here at the fork but
the best stuff is found along the left fork for a mile or so. 4WD
is required past the fork. |

From Hanksville, drive south on highway
95 for 26 miles to the junction with highway 276. Follow 276 south
for 17.1 miles to the road marked Star Springs.Go 3.4 miles on the
Star Springs road to a dirt road on the left marked with a BLM sign.
Take this road for 1.9 miles to another fork. Keep left and continue
2.5 miles to the Shootering Canyon turnoff. Follow the Shootering
Canyon road for 3.6 miles to where you will see a yellow chimeny like
structure on the right. This structure is a ventilator for a uranium
mine. HCV or 4WD is recommended beyond this point. Take the steep
and rough road up the hill and beyond the ventilator for 1.6 miles
to where you will see 4 steel posts in the ground. Park here and search
on the hillsides. |

From the intersection of highways 95 and
276, drive south on 95 for 45.5 miles to the Fry Canyon store. Take
the dirt road on the left side of the store for 4.4 miles. At this
point you will come to a small wash. Park and walk south down the
wash. After about 100 yards you will come to a larger wash running
east and west. The best pieces are found here. |

the well marked 'Hell's Backbone" road. There are two sites along

Park on highway 12, go 0.3 miles west on highway 12 to a pullout.
Park in the pullout and go up the rought track toward the hills. You
will come to some power lines. This is where you should start looking. |
