R
ocks in this county are predominantly Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, but Precambrian rocks are exposed in Westwater Canyon and Intrusive rocks make up the La Sal Mountains.

Directions: Drive north 5.5 miles from the junction of U.S. 191 and Utah Highway 313 (the road to Dead Horse Point) to a junction with a dirt road leading to the east (right) with the sign "Burro Seep Spring 1.5 miles". Follow this road about 3 miles to a junction. Turn left at the junction and go north passing through a gate. Search the gullies east and west of the road.

Location: Poison Strip Area

Land Status: BLM and mining claims.
Directions: Drive east from Crescent Junction on I-70 for 11.5 miles and exit at the "Ranch Exit". Drive south for 8.1 miles to a junction, turn left (east) and continue ino the Poison Strip area.

Location: Hotel Mesa Area

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Take Utah highway 128 east from Moab. Cross the Colorado River and proceed 3 miles until you see some buildings on the right side of the road. The mountain on the west (left) side of the road has areas where agate occurs.

Location: South of Floy Station

Directions: Go 12 miles east of Green River on U.S. 6-50 and turn south on a graded dirt road marked by a sign for "Ruby Ranch". Continue south 6.2 miles to a fenced area. Turn east and go south about a mile to a series of ridges.

Location: Thompson Area

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Starting at Crescent Junction, go south on U.S. 191 for about 4 miles to a dirt road that leads east toward Thompson. Take this road for 1.3 miles to a bridge, cross the bridge and go 300 feet and turn right. Go 1.5 miles to a junction, turn left and continue for 200 yards. With 4WD you can continue over the ridge into the next valley where the agate is found.

Location: Owl Draw

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: From the Cisco exit on I-70 drive east on U.s. 6-50 for about 2.5 miles to Utah Highway 128. Take Highway 128 south 6 miles to a bridge over a wash and turn west 100 yards past the bridge on an unimproved 4WD road. Continue for 0.5 mile to a junction, take the right fork and continue northwest and out of the draw past two cabins constructed out of railroad ties. About 0.75 mile past the cabins agate will be found along the road and to the southwest.

Location: Dubinky Well Area

Directions: Take Utah Highway 313 (the road to Dead Horse Point) for about 8.5 miles to the road to Dubinky Well. Turn right on this road and continue for 1.3 iles (staying right at the junction with Spring Canyon trail) to an unimproved 4WD trail to the right. Follow the trail 1.3 miles to where the trail climbs a low flat area. The limestone capping the area has blood red agate.

Location: Dead Horse Point Junction

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: At the junction of Utah highway 313 and U.S. 191, north of Moab, drive 1.5 miles on Highway 313 to a dirt road to the left. Take this road across the wash and up the side canyon about 0.5 miles.

Location: Monitor and Merrimac Buttes

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Starting at the Colorado River bridge in Moab, drive north on U.S 191 for 13.2 miles to Courthouse Wash. An unimproved 4WD road turns off to the left on the south side of Courthouse Wash and crosses the railroad tracks and a cattle guard. Stay to the left at the first two junctions and to the right at the third junction. There are many side roads in the area, but work your way over to the two priminent buttes. Look for agate in the red sand.

Location: Yellow Cat Flat

Directions: Drive east of Green River on I-70 about 30 miles to exit 190. Go south on the dirt road for 5.8 miles. Turn right on a dirt road and go 4.9 mies to a fork. Go right at the fork and park about 0.1 miles from the fork near a flat topped butte on the left. Search here.

Location: Dewey Bridge
Rock:

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Drive east of Green River on I-70 about 40 miles to exit 202. Take highway 128 east for 2.8 miles to an intersection. Go right on highway 128 for 7.2 miles to Dewey Bridge. Just before the bridge crosses the river, a dirt road goes to the right. A few hundred yards further is a gate. Beyond this you will need a high clearance vehicle. There is plenty of agate within walking distance of the gate.
