From Salina, drive east approximately 34 miles to exit
89. At exit 89 a dirt road heads east on the south side of the interstate.
Follow this for 2 miles to a dirt road heading south. Follow this
road for 5.4 miles to a fork. Stay right and go 3.8 miles to another
fork. Go right again for 0.4 mile to a wide flat area on the left.
This is the collecting area. |

From the intersection of U.S. 50 and 89 in Salina drive
east on Main Street for 0.2 mile to 300 East. Turn right and follow
300 East to the tunnel under I-70. Go south on the forest road up
Soldier Canyon for 3.1 miles where you will reach a fork. Go right
at the fork for 0.3 mile. The ledge on the left is the collecting
area. |

Plant-bearing horizons within the Blackhaw formation
are exposed in Salina Canyon from the vicinity of Alumbed Hollow eastward
to Taylor Flats. The old highway parallels I-70 through this area
and can be used for access. There are several areas that are reported
to be more prolific than others: On the south side of I-70 where the
road to Brown's Hole climbs the hill; On the north side if I-70 at
the mouth of Water Hollow on the southeast side; On the north side
of I-70, the canyon running NNE directly across the interstate from
Pipe Springs; On the north side of the itnerstate at Taylor Flats
along the ridge adjacent to the interstate. |
