ne of the most mineral rich counties in the state.The majority of the landscape is Paleozoic sediments with many igneous outcroppings.

Rock:

agate

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Agate occurs in the southern end of the Silver Island Mountains north of Danger Cave State Park. Take the road to the park and continue on an unimproved road about 2 miles.

Location: Stansbury Island
Minerals:

gypsum, oolitic sand

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Take I-80 west from Salt Lake City to the second Grantsville exit. Get off the interstate and travel west about a quarter of a mile past Highway 138 and take the secondary road that leads north. About 3.5 miles a fork to the right leads to a pumping station. Search the mud flats north of the canal.

Location: Timpie Mining District
Minerals:

Land Status: BLM and mining claims.
Directions: Take the U-138 exit off I-80 and follow U-138 over to the lime plant at Flux. Take a right and follow the paved road around the end of the mountain, then take the gravel road south into Timpie Valley. HCV or 4WD.

Location: Lakeside Maountains
Fossils:

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Take the Delle exit from I-80 west of Grantsville and follow the frontage road west approximately 3 miles where it turns northeastward. Continue straight after crossing the railroad tracks and proceed into the mountain area.

Location: Knolls
Minerals:

gypsum sand

Land Status: BLM and mining claims.
Directions: Take the Knolls exit from I-80 approximately 80 miles west of Salt Lake City and get on the old highway just south of the freeway. The dunes are found on both sides of the road in this vicinity.

Location: Tooele

Land Status: Private property.
Directions: Located on the south edge of Tooele, 0.7 mile from the city limits, near the electric substation in the field. A stile crosses the fence at this point. Seek permission from the property owner.

Location: Dry Canyon

Land Status: BLM and mining claims.
Directions: Take Utah highway 36 from Tooele south to Stockton. In Stockton turn left onto Silver Avenue opposite the gas station. Follow the road up the hill curving to the right and passing the softball field. Bear right across the wash from Soldier Canyon and proceed up and around the mountain into Dry Canyon, about 7 miles from Stockton. HCV needed.

Location: Ophir Canyon

Land Status: BLM, mining claims, and private property.
Directions: From Utah highway 73, south of Tooele, turn east on the signed road leading to Ophir.

Location: Lookout Pass

Rock: wonderstone
Land Status: Mining claims.
Directions: From Utah highway 36 south of Tooele, take the Pony Express Road west across Lookout Pass. On the west side of the pass at a distance fo 9.7 miles from the pavement, a road to the left leads south into Little Valley. Follow this for 4 miles to a small road on the right. This road (which may be blocked) leads to the site at the crest of the ridge.

Location: Vernon Hills
Rock:

wonderstone

Land Status: BLM.
Directions: Take Utah highway 36 south from Tooele for 37 miles to Vernon. Continue past Vernon for 4.5 miles and take the road that turns north along the west side of the railroad tracks. Wonderstone is found in the hills to the north.

Location: Thorpe Hills

Land Status: Mining claims.
Directions: Take Utah highway 73 south and west from Cedar Fort and Fairfield across Fivemile pass. Just west of the pass, take the gravel road that leads south along the west side of the Thorpe Hills. About 4 miles south, a series of side roads lead into the hills. The location is at a small mine adit marked on topo maps.

Land Status: Private land.
Directions: Take Utah highway 73 south and west from Cedar Fort and Fairfield across fivemile Pass. Just west of the pass, take the gravel road that leads south along the west side of the Thorpe Hills. Continue south about 6 miles to the water tank at Topliff by which time a large quarry is visible ont he hill to the left(east). Take the road to this quarry, passing below it, and on south aobut 0.5 mile to a small quarry on a projecting ridge. This small quarry is visible from the large quarry but not consipicuous.

Location: Dugway Range

Land Status: Mining claims.
Directions: Take Utah highway 36 south of Tooele to the Pony Express Road near Vernon. From the pavement, it is 21.6 miles to Simpson Springs, 29.0 miles to the Old River Bed, and 35.1 mils to the turnoff to the Dugway Range. This turn is marked by the Tooele-Juab county line sign. This road eventually takes you into the mining district at the north end of the Dugway range.

Location: Gold Hill

Land Status: BLM, private property and mining claims.
Directions: Gold Hill is located south of Wendover and west of the Great Salt Lake Desert. Go south out of Wendover and follow the signs to Gold Hill.
